Subway employees and their children are eligible for a subway college scholarship if a few requirements are met. Employees must have worked for Subway for at least 15 hours a week for six months and parent employees with children seeking a scholarship must work for a minimum of 30 hours a week. Students must be attend an accredited two- or four- year college anywhere in the world and maintain a 2.75 or higher GPA. Offering these unknown scholarships coincides with Subway’s emphasis on family. They seek to build strong relationships between all employees, the community, and the business, as individuals within a family must. The Subway Corporation wants to help take care of the people who have helped to make Subway a success.

Most Subway scholarships are $1000 and are distributed to the college of choice in two semester increments, during the student’s freshmen year. Hard copy applications are no longer accepted and electronic application must be received by June 1, 2011.

The Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder Scholarship honors its namesake’s contributions to the environment. College juniors, seniors, or those in a graduate program to study chemical, civil or environmental engineering or an environmental science may be eligible for the $5,000 green scholarship. The environment scholarship is funded by Brown and Caldwell, a private U.S. environmental company. Its principals of simplicity, economy and innovation drive the company’s philosophy and its sponsorship of this scholarship for being green conscious. Applications are accepted until January 31.

The organic foods company Annie’s Homegrown strives to grow and market natural foods to its customers. Their philosophy: Planet to Food, Food to People, and People to Planet sustains the company as well as Annie’s Sustainable Scholarships in Agriculture. This year $75,000 in environment scholarships will be provided to support future farmers in their education and profession. Winners are announced in April.

2011 marks the 12th Annual Brower Youth Awards which reward six outstanding leaders in the areas of conservation, preservation and restoration of the planet. All applicants will need to be enrolled at least part time while attending school and have a declared major. Western Union family scholarships offer up awards under an initiative to provide aid for migrants, immigrants and their families. The unknown scholarship is awarded to two people from the same family. Eligibility for this family scholarship requires that applicants be at least 18 years old, been in the United States for at least seven years and be attending school for an undergraduate degree. Further restrictions are placed on locations meaning that only residents of certain cities in the United States will be eligible to apply. The two family recipients will receive a total of $1,000 to $5,000 depending on financial and educational needs. All application materials are due no later than April 21, 2011.

Some unheard of family scholarships are available only through organizations to which individuals belong. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is an American-based employee union which offers just such a family scholarship. In order to be eligible for this program, students must be a family member of an AFSCME member in good standing. All applicants must be graduating from high school and be applying to an accredited university as a full time student in a four year program. Though the 2011 competition is closed at this time, this program is offered every year and students should look for 2012 applications to be available soon. An example of a family scholarship available only in a certain area is the Boulos Family Scholarship which is only offered for those students attending school in Maine. All applicants must be military personal who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan or are currently serving in the post 9/11 world. Awards range from $340 to $1,260. Though at this time all available money for the program has been assigned, students interested in signing up and becoming an active part of the program’s waiting list may still apply.

As a store which employs large numbers of young people, it is no surprise really that generally Kroger scholarships are available for high school students entering college or even college students looking to study business or other related fields.

Apart from the store scholarship offered through the UFCW there are rumors of a Kroger scholarship being offered directly to employees. Unfortunately such information is incredibly sparse and, other than popular rumors, little evidence can be found to substantiate the claims. That being said, it is often the case that large businesses offer tuition reimbursement programs to employees. Students with questions about such a program should consult with their store manager or with Kroger’s human resources department directly. Information should also be available in the employee manual, but all the forms for such a program will likely eventually have to be gathered from the company’s HR department.

One of the Kroger college scholarships available is offered in collaboration with the National Pharmaceutical Association Foundation. The Future Pharmacists Future Leader Kroger scholarship was established in 2007 and has no indication of having been canceled or closed. All applicants interested in the program must be members of the NPAF student organization and have experience in a retail environment. Applicants should also maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and, important to know, those who have applied before may reapply for the program regardless of whether they won an award or not. The program awards up to $1,000 to multiple students every year. All application materials must be received no later than January 31 of each year.

The United Negro College Fund offers a Kroger scholarship to students who reside in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina or Tennessee. Interested students should be entering college as freshmen for the first time in 2011 while having maintained a 2.5 grade point average. It awards up to $5,000 to winning students and is open to those from any major or program. Applications must be completed online through the UNCF scholarship website and are due no later than April 5, 2011.

Students who are enrolled at Cedarville University may be excited to know that a Kroger scholarship is offered directly through their institution. The award for this program is $3,500 and is open to students in the liberal arts, business and pharmacy majors. In order to be eligible for the program students must be of an ethnic minority, have a 2.5 grade point average, be available for work up to forty hours a week and have reliable transportation in order to make it to and from the work place. Making the deadline for this Kroger scholarship is as simple as making Cedarville University’s deadline for applications for financial aid.

Considering the previously mentioned UFCW program, though not a direct Kroger scholarship, the scholarship will be open to most Kroger employees. It is available to any member of the UFCW who has belonged to the organization since January 1 of a given year. Children of UFCW members are eligible to apply if they are under the age of 20 before May 31. The program awards $2,000 for recipients each year they are in college so long as they have maintained standards laid out in the acceptance agreement. While not open only to Kroger employees, many such employees are active members of the UFCW and should seriously consider applying for this particular related store scholarship. Certainly other Kroger scholarships do exist but they are not easy scholarships to uncover and apply too. The applicant pool for the UCFW scholarship is limited immediately only to active members of the union and may represent the best bet for many students in getting access to easy financial aid.

Some of these programs are not promised on into the future and the Verizon Foundation has shifted their giving focus several times in the past, so students interested in applying for potential programs should act while they are available. Because of the often temporary nature of the Verizon scholarship, or at the very least the lack of a promised future for such programs, students should be weary of old information making sure to check in on scholarship websites to double check the current status of a given program.

The two most stable Verizon college scholarships appear to be the employee scholarship and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund programs, though the National Association of Asian American Professionals has a program available until 2012. Interested students should look directly to the Verizon Foundation or do yearly searches regarding Verizon scholarships in order to be sure they have the most current information regarding available programs.

The Verizon scholarship for employees has been in place for a number of years and represents the most common or long lasting program the Verizon Foundation offers. This Verizon scholarship program is available to high school seniors who are children of Verizon employees who are planning to attend a four year university in 2011. In order to be eligible for the program applicants must be the child of an employee for a formal Verizon company such as Verizon Wireless or Verizon Corporate. Further the employee must be the legal guardian or parent of the student applying and the student must currently be in high school. This Verizon scholarship is available for those students who are children of Verizon employees in the United States but is also available for those employed outside of US territory.

Finally the program is only available for those children of employees who have been on the job for 90 days or more. Financial need is one of the most important factors in determining who will be awarded a Verizon scholarship. The full Verizon award is $20,000 which will be given out in amounts of $2,500 for each semester a student attends a university and maintains strong academic progress. All material must be submitted no later than February 1 and award decisions will be made by April.

Another Verizon scholarship which has some sign of great stability is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship which awards $2,000 to winning recipients. In order to be eligible for this phone scholarship all students must have attended Verizon’s yearly Tu Mandas workshops held at local high schools around the country and be a legal resident of the United States.
