There is sometimes a misconception that home school students may not qualify for college scholarships; however, there are actually home school scholarships for HomeSchoolers available but most are unknown scholarships. Each year more than two million students are home schooled across the United States. That number continues to arise annually.

When applying for college scholarships, it is important for home school students to keep in mind that many scholarship programs do not usually specifically prevent homeschoolers from applying. Along those same lines, there are also some scholarships that are specifically geared for homeschoolers. The numbers of such college scholarships for homeschoolers continues to rise annually, especially considering the fact that studies indicate that homeschoolers often score higher on entrance exams than public school students.

HSLD Association offers Home School Scholarships for College

The HSLD offers the Patrick Henry College scholarship award to eligible members of the Home School Legal Defense Association. These homeschooler scholarship awards range in value from $1,000 to $1,500. Applicants should be aware that this college primarily appeals to homeschoolers who are Christians. Applicants must demonstrate a financial need and must also be involved in community service as well as demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. All applicants must have family who have been a member of the HSLD for at least four years.

The Oral Roberts University Homeschool Grant for Home Schoolers

The amount of this award is $2,000. All applicants must have been homeschooled for at least four years and must have also graduated from a homeschool. To be eligible for this unknown scholarship applicants must have been previously accepted into Oral Roberts University.

Home Educators Resource Center offers Home School Scholarships

HERC offers Legacy Scholarship awards to high school students living in Kern County in California who were homeschooled. To be eligible for this little known scholarship, students do not need to be a member of HERC. Applications are judged based on a variety of elements, including the submission of a 300 to 500 word essay as well as demonstration of Christian service and academic preparedness through SAT/ACT scores and transcript. The home schooled scholarship is worth $1,000.

Indiana Congressman Mike Pence Award for Academic Excellence

Applicants for this unknown scholarship award should be residents of Indiana and must also have been homeschooled and have plans to attend a four year college or university. This home school scholarship is solely based on academic merit. Students do not need to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for this scholarship award. The scholarship is worth $2,000 and may be renewed for up to $2,000. The scholarship is funded through Apologia Educational Ministries.

North Carolina for Home Education Award for Mission and Ministry Training

To be eligible for this homeschooler scholarship award all applicants must be graduates of a homeschool in North Carolina and must also have plans to be trained for ministry or the mission field. The scholarship award is worth $500 and may be renewed for up to four years. This scholarship is funded through Apologia Mission and is also administered through North Carolinas for Home Education.

Wisconsin-Herb Kohl Excellence College Scholarship for Home School Students

This obscure scholarship program seeks to recognize citizenship, student leadership, community involvement, school involvement and academic achievement. $1,000 scholarships are awarded to 100 students throughout the state of Wisconsin. While this program does award unknown scholarships to high school students, home school students also receive a proportionate number of scholarships.

Sonlight Scholarships for for Homeschoolers

A total of 13 home school scholarships are available through this program, sponsored by Sonlight Curriculum. The award amounts of these undiscovered scholarships vary from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Students must have purchased as well as used five Sonlight core curriculum programs in order to qualify for these homeschool scholarships. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is in early December.

Washington Bible College offers Scholarships for Homeschoolers

This college offers homeschool scholarships for students who were homeschooled while juniors and seniors in high school. All applicants must be a first time student as well as a full-time student and must have plans to enter college within one year of graduating from high school. The award amounts for these homeschool scholarships vary and will also be divided between the student’s first and second semesters in college.
