CIEE Scholarships to Study Abroad

CIEE awards more than $1 million in study abroad scholarships each year to students who plan to study overseas through a CIEE program. Financial assistance offered through CIEE scholarships can be used to help defray travel costs and program fees. CIEE is committed to assisting students from a wide array of backgrounds.

The CIEE Global Access Initiative or GAIN scholarship was established for the purpose of assisting students in overcoming the primary barriers to studying abroad, primarily, curriculum requirements, and cost. GAIN assists by providing financial help to students who are economically disadvantages. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on financial need and the duration of study.

CIEE scholarships are also available through the Ping Foundation. Dr. Charles Ping served on the CIEE Board of Directors from 1993 through 2004. The goal of the Foundation is to advocate for international educational exchange, funding of scholarship programs, and research designed to advance the field of international educational exchange. Several awards are available through the Ping Foundation.

One of those awards is the CIEE International Study Programs Scholarship. This award is given to students who demonstrate both financial need and academic excellence. Awards amounts are $2,000 for year-long or semester programs and $1,000 for summer programs.

The Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for Studies in Tropical Biology was established in memory of Jennifer Ritzmann with the permission of her parents. Ms. Ritzmann was a fall participant in the Tropical Biology Program at Monteverde, Costa Rica in 1998. A junior from Ohio University, Ms. Ritzmann died in a tragic accident. She was committed to the preservation of the rain forest and it was her dream to perform forestry work in Costa Rica. It is the Foundation’s hope that through this scholarship other students with similar goals and dreams can be helped. The scholarship is awarded on a semester basis in the amount of $1,000.

The John E. Bowman Travel Grant was established in the memory of John E. Bowman. Mr. Bowman was the Executive Director of CIEE from 1952 to 1979. The goal of these awards is to provide help to student participating in CIEE study abroad programs in locations that are non-traditional. Applicants must have plans to study at a CIEE Study Center in eligible locations including Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Awards are $1,000 each and are given for the purpose of defraying the cost of travel.

The Kathleen McDermott Scholarship was established in 2012 in honor of Kathleen McDermott. Dr. McDermott served on the Executive Committee of the CIEE Academic Consortium Board. For more than 20 years, Dr. McDermott served in different roles at Columbia University, including as the first residential dean and adviser for study abroad and fellowships. To be eligible for this CIEE scholarship, applicants must be a public health or nursing major and must participate in a CIEE Community Public Health study abroad program. Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500 based on financial need and duration of study. Awards are available for summer, yearlong programs, or semester programs.

The Michael Stohl Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Michael Stohl in 2012. The scholarship is given in recognition of Dr. Stohl’s contributions to CIEE and in commemoration of his retirement from the Board of Directors. The goal of the awards is to promote participation in CIEE programs of students who are economically disadvantaged, from non-traditional backgrounds or first generation college students. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on financial need and duration of study.

The Peter Wollitzer Scholarships for Study in Asia were established by the Ping Foundation in 2006 in memory of Peter Wollitzer. Mr. Wollitzer served as Regional Director at the University of California Education Abroad Program and had a long-standing affiliation with CIEE. Participants must be willing to participate in a CIEE study center in Asia. One award is granted each semester in the amount of $2,000. Two CIEE scholarship awards of $500 are given for summer programs.

Since the CIEE scholarships for studying abroad aren’t too well-known, they could become unclaimed college scholarships. Not every student wants to go overseas to study, so the scholarship applicant pool may be small on certain years. Those are the times where these could be an easy scholarship to get as well.
