Oprah Winfrey Scholarship will never be Unclaimed

The Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Program works differently then other scholarship programs, and the Oprah scholarships will not be unclaimed scholarships by any stretch of the imagination because of her celebrity status which is known for her philanthropy and humanitarianism. Oprah Winfrey has set up (3) different charities which she designates scholarship monies for other scholarship programs of her choice at various colleges and schools.

The (3) Oprah Winfrey Charities which Oprah Winfrey runs and operates through, to provide her scholarships are:

OPRAH WINFREY FOUNDATION
This Foundation is the private foundation which is under the direction of Oprah Winfrey. This foundation is Oprah’s pride and joy. According to the most recent filing, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation has total assets of $172 million. Recently, Oprah Winfrey placed $36 million of her own money in the Foundation, which in turn distributed $8 million to numerous educational, arts and medical venues to be used for her Oprah Winfrey Scholarships. This organization normally will not accept donations from the public. If the public wants to support Oprah Winfrey-related philanthropic work through donations, you would be directed to do so through the Oprah’s Angel Network (OAN) below.

OPRAH WINFREY OPERATING FOUNDATION
This Foundation is a private operating foundation whose current focus is operating the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa Program. The main focus is providing monies through endowments to South African schools only. Oprah describes the reason behind establishing this Foundation this way “I believe that one of a nation’s most important resources is its young people, and the key that allows young people to create a better world and a brighter future is education. Now, more than ever, it is vitally important for Africa,” said Winfrey. “Investing in the higher education of individual African women is an investment in positive change.”

OPRAH’S ANGEL NETWORK (OAN)
Oprah’s Angel Network grants awards to organizations and operates projects in under-served communities that provide educational initiatives as well as assist people in fulfilling basic human needs and regaining dignity. Because Oprah Winfrey makes a donation to Oprah’s Angel Network equal to its management and general as well as fundraising expenses, 100% of your donation goes toward program costs. This is the program the public is encouraged to provide donations for. The Angel Network is heavily promoted on Winfrey’s show for fans to help raise money for worthy causes.

Oprah Winfrey Scholarships Operate this Way
If a college already has a scholarship program for people who exhibit a strong financial need, Oprah may donate monies to that particular scholarship program. It must be specifically used for that scholarship program Oprah Winfrey donated the monies for, and it can’t be used for another scholarship program at that school unless it’s authorized by Oprah herself. The Oprah Winfrey Foundations put strong emphasis for empowering ethnic minorities who lack the funds to go through college, and especially women in particular. Oprah’s Endowments seem to sponsor scholarships that directly make an effort to tackle these two groups. Ms. Winfrey’s private foundation was originally established in 1987 to support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world. Ms. Winfrey’s charities have awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that carry out her world vision.

Example of an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Program
The Oprah Winfrey Foundation awarded $2.5 million endowment to New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service for the creation of The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program for African Women. The program will allow African women to pursue graduate studies in public policy and management at the Wagner School. It is the first known of its kind at an American University.

How to Apply for a Oprah Winfrey Scholarship
If you want to apply for an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship directly, you cannot do so. You must contact the various colleges and universities in which the Oprah Winfrey Foundation has donated scholarship contribution monies to, and apply to that particular school. You can then fill out an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship application there. The Oprah scholarship will be augmented along with another similar scholarship program at that school (college or university or trade school). The scholarship will have more giving power and be better able to accommodate more students in terms of scholarship numbers and the amount of the stipend awarded to each student. Ask the college/university financial aids office which you are contemplating going to, if they have been awarded any monies from the Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Foundation, or simply search online for any school which received monies from the Oprah Foundation. If they have, immediately apply. It will surely not be an unclaimed scholarship, simply because of its notoriety.

Don’t let this discourage you from applying for it though!

    kimone kerr,

since each college is responsible for awarding the monies for the Oprah scholarship it will depend on their criteria they set for allocating those monies. Because of Oprah’s history of ‘all are included’ approach to life in general i’m sure there are monies available for everyone including international students. Check with the college you will be attending or want to attend to see what their criteria is – if they carry this program at all.

Hi I am Raul I am a student in Fordham University in the Bronx New York. Mayor on PRE-MED I would like to have one of those scholarship that never bein claimed. Please I really need support to finish my Doctor in Medicine.

  4. admin

    Raul,

your best plan of action for student aid since you are enrolled in Fordham University is to go into your financial aids office and meet with the manager so she can let you know what the latest financial aid is for you. You must apply to as much as you can. Go to unknown college scholarships which gives very good ideas for student aid. Also go to student loans without cosigners as a last resort. These are the very best government student loans with the best repayment terms.

    Jonathan,

you must start applying to as many scholarships/grants where you fit their criteria. Apply to the Pell grant. Did you fill out your FAFSA? This will tell you if you qualify for some type of student aid. Talk to the financial aids office manager at Moorehouse University to see what options they can extend for you directly.

I am a parent of a freshmen who is enrolled at Saint Mary’s this fall. My husband makes good money which pretty much took us out of receiving any Cal Grants or other govt funding. Yes he gets paid good but he has a household of 9 to support. So we basically live paycheck to paycheck. Come Aug.5th I need to come up with $4000 and I dont know where im getting it from. Our credit is bad and our bills are outrageous. I dont know what else I can do to make this work. She was ranked 7th in a class of 355 students with an academic GPA of 4.21. She had managed all this even though her life at home was crazy. Both parents on drugs alot of arguments than CPS came into our lives. So her life was a mess but yet she stayed focused and she doing it. Help a mom that so wants her girl to go to college. Anyone with any advice would be much appreciated and forever grateful.

  12. Mulumebet Tilahun

What I like to know is whether Oprah support those of us who are not living in US but wants to change our (our kids’) life with further education though z schoolarship program?

  13. admin

    Mulumebet,

Oprah does provide support for those living outside the US by granting monies to schools which those schools use to help students with student aid. It is up to the schools to use how they want. You must find out by asking which schools have received monies from the Oprah foundation by asking the schools themselves if they were granted monies from the Oprah Foundation.

Hi we are looking for scholarsip for an International Student for Undergraduate Major in Civil Engineering. We watch the Oprah show all the time and admire how she has help so many, many persons to numerous to count. How do we get some financial help. Our son has been accepted to several college in the United States to further his degree. We have applied for scholarships and because college fees are like a mortgage for poor foes we are unsure about the financing. We are soliciting some help. It is very cruicial at this point to get sufficent financing.
Thanks you, we hope to hear from Oprah and or her team in this regard, she indeed is making a difference in the world.

  23. admin

    Debbie,

read more about study abroad scholarships. you must contact Oprah directly via her website to make a personal appeal for student monies BUT this is not the way her scholarships are set up and I don’t think you will get very far on a personal request. Read the article again to really understand how an Oprah scholarship works.

  24. JR Garcia

I have applied to numerous outside scholarships and have won a few. However, many colleges/universities use outside scholarships to replace the scholarships given by that institution if you are not packaged with student loans or work study. So in other words, when the outside scholarships are paid directly to the colleges, they are funding the school and not the student and their family. How does a student help their family reduce the financial burden when colleges only use outside scholarship to replace the Stafford loan, work study and self help?

    Thanks, JR

Dear Oprah……I am trying to help a man / boy around 19 years of age apply for a scholarship or grant… He tried to contact you through Facebook somehow and was disciplined for contacting someone he doesn’t know….I don’t think he has a very up-to-date computer…..He lives in Gambia, Africa. He has asked me to help him contact you….his father is 75 years old, 4-5 younger siblings at home still, lost his mother when he was around 10 years old, tried to apply for the army to get education or learn a trade and was denied / rejected. He seems very depressed and forlorn at times and tries to hide it from me, but I can sense it:-( He just wants some schooling to get a trade> to get a job, I don’t know him well, just through Facebook, he has kind of adopted me as his mother 🙂 He works daily making bricks for $2.00 a day!!!! My heart is going out to him, I feel sad for him and he tries to make the best of life:-) He tells me the brick making is very hard work just through conversation and he asked me to help him contact you….is there some way you can help please? I can tell by his manner, he would be willing to work through school, but $2.00 a day doesnt cut it???? He never asked me for monetary help and I am not in a position to help him that way as I am older, retired and on a fixed income. I will give you his name on Facebook……it is Landing J. Sanyang >Banjul, Gambia— I don’t know his e-mail, I could probably get it if need be. ..please consider this lovely kind man,as it would be very much appreciated by him and myself …..sincerely and thank-you Helen

  26. helen

Thank you for your reply……I will notify him to do this …hopefully he can connect with his computer….. I will keep you posted…. if you so desire ? 🙂

  27. CHARDONNAY THOMAS

Chardonnay thomas has the following comments or questions: To whom it may concern I am a 21 year old that’s majoring in Mass communication at Northwestern State University in Louisiana . I am a poor single black female that’s trying to earn a degree and someday I hope to become a news reporter. I transferred from a community college to a university and my Pell grant didn’t cover my tuition . I am reaching out to UNCF to see if you all would be generous enough to help me pay for the rest of my tuition so I can continue my education. All that I ask is that you all let me continue my education. I feel that a minor setback is a major comeback. I am very studious and one day I see myself televised with the usage of my degree. If there is anything else that I can do to better interest you all please feel free to comment. I am eagerly waiting your response. Thanking you in advance, Chardonnay Thomas
