If you are, then chances are you have heard of the Georgia HOPE Scholarship Program. HOPE is an acronym for Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally. The  Georgia HOPE Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to the state’s students at eligible public and private universities and colleges. Students who graduate from high school as HOPE Scholars and meet the state’s residency requirements are eligible to enter their first year of college as Hope Scholars. If a student fails to meet the academic requirements for becoming a Hope Scholar, he or she will again be eligible after completing 30 semesters of postsecondary education while maintaining a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

High school students who aspire to meet Hope Scholarship Georgia requirements must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 if they are planning to attend college. In addition, they must take a certain number of classes in each area of the core curriculum in order to qualify. Candidates who are home schooled are not eligible to apply for HOPE GA Scholarship eligibility until after they have successfully completed 30 semester hours of college and maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0. They are permitted, however, to apply for a book allowance of $300 annually. Students who are preparing to take their GED exam, however, may apply for a HOPE Grant, which, like the Georgia HOPE Scholarship, offers full tuition and fees covering the cost of obtaining the GED certificate.

Exactly what fees does Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship cover? That depends on whether a student attends a public or private university. HOPE Scholars who attend public universities are awarded based upon a per hour rate at the institution he or she is attending. The HOPE scholarship program does not cover room and board expenses. In comparison, students who choose to attend a private school full-time will receive:

*Full-time students: $1,800 per semester, $1,200 per quarter
*Half-time students: $900 per semester, $600 per quarter $3,000 toward their tuition

A $300 book allowance may also be awarded.

Currently, the HOPE GA Scholarship program is offered only to Georgia residents. In recent years, however, other states, including Tennessee, New Mexico, and Florida have adopted similar programs. Indiana and Wisconsin are also considering incentives to assist students to attend college and remain residents after graduation.
