ABOUT THE AWARD

The obscure WOOD SCHOLARSHIPS, awarded by the Wood Scholarship Board, is awarded to the students of the Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato, who are actively involved in community service & have contributed to the society. The obscure Wood Scholarships are also called as the Truman & Reta Wood Community Leadership Scholarships & has two awards totaling $10,000 annually.

ABOUT THE BOARD

The WOOD Scholarship board was set-up in Jan 1994 by its various founders namely Dr Truman Wood & Reta Wood. Truman Wood is the former professor of Political Science/Law Enforcement at MSU & Reta Wood taught elementary school 25 years for Mankato Area Public Schools. Both of them have been participating regularly in community services in the Mankato area. Truman Wood providing service to the church, Mankato Planning Commission and local politics & Reta Wood involved with church and civic organizations. Currently the board consists of various members including the friends and students of the Woods. The board has awarded Wood scholarships to the tune of $260,000 in Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato scholarships till date. The major contributor towards the scholarship fund has been the Annual fundraising dinner – part guest lecture & part social event.

SELECTION PROCESS

The Wood scholarships are given to the students based on the below criteria.

• Creativity & commitment to community activities

• Problem solving skills

• Dedication towards community & contributions

• Political Science or International Relations as the first major

• 90 semester hours completed by the end of Spring semester

• Excellent GPA

The selection is done based on the applicants’ dedication towards the community. As the founders are very active in community services, the main factor for selection of the winner is the area of social service as well. The application needs to be accompanied by the details of the community service with the references from the Political Science faculty members from MSU. The application forms are available at the website & have to be mailed with the required attachments by the application deadline which is normally by Feb or March of every year. Two winners are selected by the board with each receiving a Wood scholarship for $5,000 annually. The National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF) Photography Scholarship is awarded by the NPPF to the press photography students to assist them in the study of photojournalism & associated subjects. These unique scholarships for photography are for those talented scholars who are committed to photojournalism and need financial assistance to pursue higher education. There are a number of unique NPPF college photography scholarships for graduate and undergraduate students.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The NPPF was founded in 1976 & is a non-profit organization & is associated with the National Press Photographers Association. The association was started in 1946 and is committed to promotion of news media including visual journalism & creation, practice, training, editing and distribution of the same. The awards are provided by the foundation to the students planning to attend college full-time or the already enrolled full-time students.

Each of the above scholarships for photography has their own set of specific selection criteria. The general criteria for all the photography scholarships are as follows.

• Applicant should be enrolled full time in a four year college or university course.
• Suspended study re-joining is also acceptable.
• Evidence of dedication for photojournalism needs to be provided.
• Showcase the need for financial help.
• Excellent GPA.
• Various material information of the applicant needs to be accompanied with the application form including portfolio, photographs & letters of recommendation.
• Funds provided should be utilized in the beginning of the next semester else it is forfeited.
• Students can apply for more than one college photography scholarship but can receive only one unique scholarship for photography in one given year.
• Portfolio of the application is a must

The deadline for all the photography scholarship applications is March 1st. The application needs to be received by the respective committee for evaluation – mandatory.

CLOSURE NOTE
NPPF believes in providing opportunities for the various to-be-photojournalists to achieve success in the field of print media & related studies. The distance between the various countries and communities is “decreasing” due to the advanced communication media and this needs to be explored more. The NPPF unique scholarships for photography students are one such medium to help the students open the door towards latest & advanced technology. Adaption of advanced technology requires more learning and this is directly possible through the awards & programs sponsored by the organization.

If you weren’t crazy about eating your vegetables growing up, you may be crazy about the Vegetarian Scholarships, provided by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG). This organization promotes a green environment through vegetarianism & provides financing for a higher education to high school graduates through their VRG vegetarian scholarship program. Every year the award of $5000 each is given to two graduating US high school students who would have encouraged vegetarianism in their schools or/and communities.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The VRG is a non-profit organization committed and dedicated to educate the community and society about vegetarianism and the related issues of health, environment, nutrition, ecology, ethics and other topics. A Vegetarians diet would not consist of meat, chicken, fish, beef or pork, but rather anything else but meat. The organization does market the benefits of being vegetarian – better health through lower BMI, lower cholesterol level & longer average life expectancy are some of them.

The organization provides distinct services for activists, non-profit organizations, businesses, member services, better ecological footprints and nutrition education. “Vegetarian Journal”, cooking tips and recipes are some the means it uses to serve the vegetarian community. It also promotes ideas as “Vegetarian Family” and “Veg Teens”.

APPLICATION PROCESS
The application procedure for the VRG scholarships for vegetarians is pretty simple as no pre-printed form is necessary for the same. The applicant needs to fill some specific information as asked by the organization on one neat paper. Below is the information to be covered in the application.

  • General Information about the applicant
  • Major Individual details including high school information
  • Essay with below details
  • Details about the promotion of Vegetarianism in school/community by the applicant & other similar topics
  • Copies of report card for previous two years
  • Three or more recommendations (at least one from teacher)
  • One documentation about applicant’s promotion of vegetarianism with photographs or newspaper stories

The application can be made only by the high school students graduating in spring 2010. Deadline for the application is Feb 20, 2010. Applications only for US based colleges are accepted. Applicants are selected based on the compassion, commitment and courage shown to promote vegetarian environment diet and lifestyle. Only the final winners are notified about the decision.

CLOSURE NOTE
As per a 2009 study nearly 3% of US adult population is vegetarian with 15% students of the total US population as never having meat at all. The organization is aiming to have a healthy environment & eco-system and the best step forward is to educate the people about the benefits. The VRG Vegetarian Scholarships are one such medium to educate the students & community at the grass root level. This award is to recognize the high school students for their academic merit, leadership role and the commitment to community service. 100 such students nationwide are chosen for this award with Toyota scholarship amounts in between $ 10,000 to $20,000 spread over four years. Toyota awarded $1.12 million in 2007 to recognize brilliance of high school seniors by the means of this award. (These numbers are far from being a wacky scholarship.)

Toyota AIKCU Named Scholars Program
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Co, Kentucky supports AIKCU – Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities – since 1986 and sponsors one student from each 20 independent college and university campuses across the state of Kentucky. The selection criteria are based on the merit, leadership capabilities, active participation in community services, future goals and other skill sets. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation
Since 2004 Toyota started supporting the MCSF by providing award of $5,000 each to students, belonging to Marine family, in all of the 12 Toyota’s operational regions across the US. The commitment from Toyota is to have funding of $1.25 million every year and have increased this to $1.65 million in 2006. This scholarship is to assist the students from marine family – as the MCSF tag line specifies “Honoring Marines by Educating their Children”.

Youth for Understanding Scholarship (YFU)
YFU is a non-profit student exchange organization and provides an opportunity to young people to spend time abroad, in foreign country, with a host family and understand the culture of the country. Since 1975, Toyota Motor Sales, USA has awarded more than 500 scholarships to various students visit worldwide locations during summers. This program is open only for US citizens with excellent academic records, financial need and specific age criteria.

FFA – Future Farmers of America, works towards the mission to promote agricultural education and develop students as future leaders.
