Through the efforts of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAI), a program was instituted to fund asthma scholarships for students who are graduating from high school and have been previously diagnosed with asthma. These monies can be utilized only for the cost of college tuition, as well as books or fees, at a regionally accredited two or four-year university. A similar award is offered by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, or AAFA. These freshman asthma scholarships are offered to two graduating high school seniors who have been diagnosed with asthma, and have demonstrated an ability to be role models for younger persons with the same health condition. Each successful candidate will receive $500. This asthma college scholarship requires both documented academic achievement and a written essay. These are college scholarship essays.

            

Other undergraduate scholarships for people with asthma are offered by the Schering-Plough Corporation “will to win asthma scholarship” program. Financial awards are given to individuals who have proven themselves able to lead healthy and active lifestyles despite their asthma. Approximately $50,000 in Schering asthma scholarship monies are awarded by this program annually. Five categories are available, and two students applying to each category will be awarded scholarships of $5,000 each. These areas include student government, athletics, performing arts, visual arts, and community service. The winning candidate will have received at least one merit award in the category for which they apply. In addition, to qualify for this Scherling asthma scholarship, students must maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA). This award is non-renewable.

         

Other related scholarships for students with asthma include awards for students who have food allergies, provided through the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network. Several students are able to receive asthma award monies of up to $1,500 each year. Related asthma scholarships are available to students interested in pursuing research study into food allergies or eye, ear, nose and throat disorders.

       

College scholarships for athletes with asthma is offered to the Asthma Athlete of the Year, and the qualifying student will receive up to $10,000 in scholarship monies.
