Burger King Scholarship Program is not Unclaimed

A whopper of a Burger King Scholarship Program is what Burger King offers to students every year. The burger king scholarship or bk scholarship for short has helped many students trim their college cost for a number or years. The requirements to qualify for a bk scholarship are not too stringent either.

Burger King is the “Home of the Whopper.” The initials BK are synonymous with flame-broiled burgers, French fries, and shakes. It is known as one of the most popular fast food chains in North America.

Another fact, however, that is not known to a large number of persons, is that BK is also the home of the burger king scholarship program that will award $1,000 each to approximately 700 students graduating from high school in 2007. These students are graduates of any high school located in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico, as well as accredited home-school diploma programs located in these regions. The scholarship monies are to be used for the first year of a student’s college or vocational/technical school education. It is a non-renewable scholarship.

The Burger King Scholarship program is dedicated to the memory of James McLamore, co-founder of the Burger King restaurant chain. By the end of the 2010 14 million has been awarded to date since program inception. The foundation has awarded 1.2 million dollars to eligible students the past year. In order to qualify for this money, students must have worked part-time (at least 15 hours weekly) for at least 40 weeks a year, and must have maintained at least a 2.5 grade point average while being employed. Although students are not required to earn their work experience at a Burger King restaurant, employees of the chain are eligible to apply for the award money. Any student to whom the bk scholarship is awarded must be planning to enroll in a post-secondary educational program the fall after his or her high school graduation.

The burger king scholarship application for this burger king scholarship program are available only online through the BK Scholarship Program Administrators website. The deadline for applications period opens Nov. 15, and closes Jan. 10. These awards will be based on financial need, as well as the student’s involvement in the community, extracurricular activities, and letters of reference. Other factors that are considered include academic records and work experience.

Burger King Scholarship program semifinalists will be notified of their status two weeks after the application deadline has passed. They will then receive information about additional information that is required to decide the winners. Those who have not reached semifinalist status will be notified by email. The winners will be determined approximately two months after the application deadline has passed.

The company’s website offers a searchable list of scholarship winners to date. This King scholarship, which is not highly advertised, was begun in 2000. In 2002, the company had offered over $1.8 million in scholarships. The company’s stated goal was to be able to offer 10,000 scholarships annually to students by the year 2010. Unfortunately, however, this does not look like an achievable goal. Financial setbacks have caused the bk scholarship to decrease the number of scholarships offered each year, rather than increase the awards.

Despite these difficulties, however, the burger king scholarship program remains a very achievable scholarship for students who are working and juggling the demands of extracurricular activities, work, and academic excellence. The decreased amount available makes it less likely that the burger king scholarship money will be unclaimed scholarships, but $1,000 is definitely worth the short amount of time required to fill out the application and compete for an award.
