What are Unclaimed Scholarships?

What are unclaimed scholarships for students who are willing to search out such funds and does unclaimed scholarship money really exist?

unclaimed scholarships
What are Unclaimed Scholarships?

There is sometimes a common perception that there are millions of dollars available in unclaimed scholarships for students who are willing to search out such funds. There are also many people who state that a large percentage of the unclaimed scholarship money is only a myth and that such funds do not actually exist.

The truth of the matter regarding unclaimed scholarships may actually exist somewhere in the middle of these two viewpoints. Below we explore what are unclaimed scholarships.

Unclaimed Scholarships are Unusual Scholarships

Unrewarded scholarship funds do appear to exist to some degree. Unclaimed college scholarships may primarily stem from rather restrictive unknown scholarships that have an extremely small pool of eligible scholarship applicants. Such unusual scholarships might include those that are only offered to applicants who meet a rare set of characteristics. Due to this, these unclaimed scholarships may result in left over funds that are not issued annually because eligible applicants did not apply for those unusual scholarships.

Employer Sponsored Scholarships are Unclaimed

There are also often claims that billions of dollars in scholarships went unclaimed over the previous year. Although it would certainly be nice if this were true and students could simply claim those unclaimed scholarships, this type of statement is often based on older estimates regarding unused tuition benefits offered by employers that the general public simply would not be eligible to receive. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, approximately 85% of the funds that are referred to as unclaimed scholarships may actually be employer-paid education benefits. Many businesses offer to pay education benefits to employees as a way of enhancing the quality of their workforce.

Unclaimed Scholarships may be Hard to Get

It would appear that unclaimed scholarships may be available but they do not appear to be available in the easy to obtain and abundant numbers that are typically reported. If you do have an unusual talent or a rare set of characteristics it might be possible that you are eligible for some obscure scholarship funds which other students would not be eligible to receive, but it would be best not to count on such unclaimed scholarship funds to fund the entire cost of your education. This is particularly true when you consider the fact that there are other ways you can fund your education, including numerous easier scholarship programs that are not based on a restrictive set of eligibility criteria.

Never Pay Fees to Get Unclaimed Scholarships

Students trying to find unclaimed scholarships may actually come across a number of different claims. One of those is that by paying a small fee you will be provided with a comprehensive list of scholarships for which the student is eligible. Such claims also frequently include the claim that the unclaimed college scholarships come from a large database. The reality is that students should never feel as though they need to pay to receive a database of scholarship information, even for unclaimed scholarships. The best and biggest scholarship databases are actually available with no need to pay to receive the information. The number of unclaimed college scholarships claimed to be available by some services can oftentimes be misleading due to the fact that individual sponsors may actually offer hundreds of different types of scholarships.

Check for Unclaimed Scholarship Money at the College You Attend

Prospective scholarship applicants that do want to make certain they do not miss out on any unclaimed scholarships may wish to check with the institution they plan to attend regarding any obscure scholarships that may be issued directly through that institution.

Unclaimed scholarships that are available to a small pool of applicants are sometimes offered directly through a college or university. Applicants to that school or students who are already attending that school may have a better opportunity to receive those limited or restrictive scholarships than the general population.

Unclaimed scholarship money may be available, but not in the abundant and easy to grab quantities that are sometimes reported. If you have an unusual talent or the right last name, you might be eligible for unheard about & obscure pots of scholarship gold for which most other students can’t apply. The scholarship application pool is small, or non-existent. These savings vehicles may be better than college saving funds for some families.

***According to a fairly recent study by Nerd Scholar, the higher education team at Nerd Wallet, stated that high school graduates in the U.S. left more than $2.9 billion in free federal grant money unused over the last academic year!!!

Applying for scholarships is certainly a good way to pursue an advanced education and also to help defray the costs of a higher education. There are many scholarships that are available that offer awards to thousands of deserving students each year. While unclaimed scholarships may not exist in the numbers and amounts that are frequently reported, there are unclaimed scholarship opportunities that do exist for eligible students.

Cargill Community Scholarship Programs

High school scholarships by the Cargill scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors. Unknown scholarships for sons & daughters are easy scholarships.

Cargill Community Scholarship for High School
Cargill Scholarships

If you live in a community that is near any Cargill business, you may be eligible for one of the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs. Often, unknown scholarships that are available in a student’s local community are over looked as a possible source of funding for a higher education because students simply aren’t aware of them. This very well could be the case with the Cargill scholarship for high school students. Cargill hands out large amounts of relatively unknown scholarships each and every year and all high school students should take the time to apply if they default into the Cargill scholarship criteria. These can be easy scholarships for many high school students.

Cargill is an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial & industrial products and services. Started in 1865, Cargill has 159,000 employees world wide in 68 countries. Cargill is an innovative company which has been prosperous at challanging economic, environmental and social problems head on.

The Cargill Scholarship Program includes three different scholarships – the Cargill Community Scholarship Program, the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Juniors, and the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Seniors.

To be eligible for the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs community scholarship, you must be a high school senior, and you must live in a community near a Cargill business operation. While the scholarship application must be signed by someone who works for Cargill, Cargill employees and their children are not eligible for this particular HS scholarship.

The amount of this scholarship for high school seniors award is $1000, and a $200 grant is given to each winner’s high school library as a bonus. This is a one time award and it is awarded to 350 students annually. Applications are usually due in February of each year, and the winners are notified in May. The application is usually available from the Cargill website in November of each year.

The other two scholarship types make up the rest of the Cargill Community Scholarships Programs, and these corporate scholarships are for the children of Cargill employees. The first one is the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Juniors. As the name implies it is awarded to high school juniors, and only ten of these scholarships are awarded annually. Students should apply during their junior year of high school, and applications are due in February.

The amount of this scholarship for high school juniors is $1000, for each year of college, up to four years. Any high school junior is eligible if they have a parent working for Cargill, and if they have taken the PSAT/NMSQT. Remember, that this is a renewable scholarship, meaning that you will receive $1000 for each year that you are in college, but there may be conditions such as maintaining a certain grade point average to remain eligible. Your parent will also need to remain an employee of the company to retain eligibility.

The second high school scholarship, the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Seniors, have the same guidelines and requirements, except that the student must be a senior when they apply. (40) of these scholarships are awarded each year, but they are one time awards, in the amount of $3000.

If you are eligible for either of these unknown scholarships for high school students for sons and daughters, you should apply for both – in your junior year of high school, and again in your senior year. These high school scholarships are not made available to graduate students.

If you are not eligible for these high school scholarships, or you do not win one, be aware that the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs have other options, such as internship programs or employee tuition reimbursement programs. Check with your high school guidance counselor or visit the Cargill Scholarship website to get more information about their scholarships and these other opportunities.

The AusAID Scholarships Unknown to Most

Have you heard of the AusAID scholarships? They are unknown scholarships and not many have but they are an Australian scholarship.

AusAID scholarships
AusAID Scholarships

Have you heard of the ‘AusAID scholarships’? They are unknown scholarships and not many have, but if your from Australia you may have because the AusAID scholarship comes from there, and here’s the story behind it and how you can apply if you would like to study in Australia. There are many institutions that have grown to such power and enormity that even those working directly within and for them forget the mission and vision the company began with. Most of us don’t even want to acknowledge the fact that these corporate giants, these masters of the modern world, started out as downtrodden and humble meetings that began with, “I have an idea!” The AusAID Scholarships from Australia are one such institution.

This branch of the Australian Leadership Awards (shortened to ALA) remembers where they came from, and seek to promote goodwill and equal opportunities for all people in the world, while maintaining integrity and value for their currency. This is a thrust of the Australian Government that seeks to open and create opportunities for students all over the Asia-Pacific Region. AusAID is a government scholarship award.

The Initiative of the AusAID Scholarship

Launched back in 2009 by the Australian Leadership Awards, AusAID scholarships seek to maximize and support Australia’s relationship with other countries. It will unite other awards giving bodies such as their Department of Education and the Endeavor Awards under one recognizable, long-lasting standard. The AusAID’s goals are for the growth of its country and contacts, strengthening institutional and individual understanding, talents, and skills. They aim towards creating altruistic, noble, and willful leaders to govern the future. Aside from supporting those in their own country, AusAID also seeks to help exceptional students from other countries study and find their career in Australia. When their education and exposure in Australia are complete, the students are then sent back to their mother country to continue their personal growth and development there and to support their own country and government’s independence with his/her new knowledge.

The Benefits of Applying for AusAID Scholarships 2011

Aside from a fully paid tuition fee, as well as return travel from homeland to Australia and back, the scholar is fitted with a one-time 5,000 Australian Dollars (roughly $4,900.00 USD) allowance to establish him/herself in the country. This means books, insurance, and study materials will be paid for. Also, their Contribution to Living Expense (CLE) is a stipend to living expenses that will be determined by AusAID. Since 2009, those under this scholarship have received a total of A$25,000. Once the student gets their bearings in the country, and as soon as he/she is orienting into the immediate surroundings, a mandatory 4-6-week program will teach them of culture, history, and student life in Australia. This is even before their studies formally begin. There is also an Overseas Student Health Cover award, paying for a student’s basic medical costs, should they win the award. If the student is deemed to require English communication training, there will be English Pre-course training before entering the country, or during exposure.

Who Are Qualified for the Unknown AusAID Scholarship 2011?

Initial qualifications are based on countries who are supporters and members of Australian Development Scholarships. A short list of these includes Asia (Philippines, Bangladesh, China, India, Cambodia, Viet Nam), the Carribean (Haiti, Jamaica, Belize, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago), the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq), and Latin America (Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador, Nicaragua).

If you live in one of these countries, you must not be engaged or married to an Australian or New Zealand citizen, and have no permanent residences in either country, as well as applying from outside Australia. Previous AusAID scholarships must be done 24 months before being eligible for application. For those who are familiar with English, you will still need acceptable test results from TOEFL and IELTS no longer than 24 months prior to applying. When it comes to unknown scholarships this makes the list because of its obscurity coming from one country. Not all will fit the criteria but someone will and this is why we featured it!

Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship from the Funny Guy

Jerry Seinfeld scholarships are given to those students who have displayed outstanding academic progress and have financial need and not a fun scholarship for being funny.

jerry-seinfeld-scholarship
Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship

UPDATE: 3/9/2018
Apparently – The Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship Program is not being offered at this time.

Jerry Seinfeld scholarships are given to those students who have displayed outstanding academic progress and have financial need and not a fun scholarship for being funny. As opposed to the popular and funny character in the television series, “Seinfeld,” Seinfeld scholars are largely good people who need a hand trying to get through school. Established in 2000 by the truly funny comedian Jerry Seinfield and his family, the program has provided funding to many students in New York City at over 175 schools in which the Seinfeld scholarship is available. Created in collaboration with an organization called PENCIL which works to build relationships between business leaders and schools, the Jerry Seinfeld scholarship represents an excellent opportunity for students in the New York area.

While Jerry Seinfeld began his career as a comedian, interested applicants should understand that this is not a joke and they should take their applications very seriously. The applicant pool for the Seinfeld scholarship is going to be fairly big, so making sure that an application stands out is going to be incredibly important. This is going to be best achieved by balancing a strong submission and personal activities which will be weighed carefully by the selection committee. These are going to include leadership roles, volunteer activities and other extracurricular activities in local communities.

The award amount for the Seinfeld scholarship goes as high as $10,000. It is designed specifically to cover additional funds which have not been met through other funding sources, excluding student loans. On top of access to financial assistance, recipients of the award will also be given other forms of help including college prep programs, mentoring services and various service activities. Having this sort of support will really help a student through the school year and relate what they are learning in the classroom to their future careers. Various service activities will also help a student out with applications for not only school but also employment, showing a clear dedication not only to getting work done but going above and beyond what is required of an individual.

Eligibility for the Seinfeld scholarship is pretty well-defined on the website. Only United States citizens are able to apply for the program and they must be graduating in June of the year in which they are requesting financial assistance. All applicants are expected to have a grade point average of no less than 85 on a 100 scale and be planning to attend college the following fall immediately following graduation at an accredited university. The university selected by an applicant cannot be a community college but rather must be a four-year institution. Applicants should also be able to show a strong need for financial assistance and the total income of their family should be no more than $60,000 a year. Finally all applicants must file a FAFSA request and be a legal resident of New York, alien or native. Application material is made available online as of December 1 and the deadline will be announced the following year. As a result all applicants should pay close attention to the website to be sure they do not miss the announcement date.

The Seinfeld scholarship does not accept applications from all schools in New York, and often focuses on particular areas of interest. For example in 2010, applicants applying for the 2011 academic year had to be graduating from high schools in the Queens borough of New York City. Because of the occasional variation in where applications are coming from students would be well advised to look over the particulars of a given year’s application guidelines before submitting an application. While the program may have been offered for graduates in Queens for 2011 awards, 2012 awards could come from the same area or somewhere else in the city. It is important to pay attention to this especially because it would be a waste of time for anybody from an ineligible borough to apply for the program when their energies could be put to use applying to programs they are actually eligible for. So always pay attention to website when applying and, should your area be selected as one of interest, good luck in the application process.

Most Government Scholarships are Unique

Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are available though they tend to represent a smaller total of scholarships.

government-scholarships
Government Scholarships

The image of what a standard scholarship represents in the United States is typically idealized in the image of a private foundation or group offering money based on merit for various students with differing eligibility requirements. Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are also available, though they tend to represent a smaller total of the overall little known about scholarship pool. These federal government scholarships which are normally offered on a competitive basis are often given out by individual departments or groups at the federal level. It is very common for these government college scholarships to be offered to graduate students, but there are also some programs available to undergraduates as well. The reason that these programs are often given out to specifically graduate students relates to the fact that the US government is often interested in encouraging specialized development for individuals who may be interested in employment with the government after graduation. As these are often awarded on a competitive basis, students interested in government scholarships should be prepared to present themselves in the best light possible, scoring high in academic material and, especially for graduate students, be able to present a clear idea of their overall academic goals.

Since these unheard about government scholarships for students are given out by individual departments at the federal level, students should be able to identify potential sources of funding by being able to identify their career interests. For instance, those interested atmospheric or oceanic sciences should look at the national oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for access to gov scholarships which may apply to them.

Considering NOAA, students interested in a government scholarship which focuses on atmospheric or oceanic sciences should be pleased to know that the annual Ernest F. Hollings scholarship returns in 2011. Unlike many federal government scholarships, the Ernest F Hollings program is available primarily to undergraduates. An exceptional program, this fed gov scholarship gave out over 100 awards in 2010 of up to $8,000 as well as making available internships for interested students at NOAA during breaks from school. In order to be eligible for this government scholarship an applicant must be an US citizen while maintaining a full-time status at an accredited university in the US. The cumulative grade point average for all completed courses must be at a minimum 3.0 and all applicants must be majoring in a program related to atmospheric or oceanic studies. Applications for this program are made available on October 1 of every year and the deadline for all materials is February 4.

An excellent government scholarship for college through the Department of Homeland Security exists for students who are interested in studying a field related to the DHS’s related fields of studies. Broadly speaking these fields can include agricultural sciences, mathematics, life sciences, physical sciences, psychology, social sciences, computer sciences and engineering. Amongst these fields are specific courses or subjects which the DHS requires students to be pursuing in their studies. As a result, when applying for this unique gov scholarship, students should look over these eligibility requirements very carefully. The DHS offers government scholarships at the undergraduate level providing the full cost of tuition and related fees while also giving a $1,000 a month stipend during the school year and an additional $5,000 during a mandatory 10 week internship. In order to be eligible for the DHS government scholarship program students must be an US citizen and working towards as bachelor’s degree. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA at a minimum while also maintaining this throughout the course of them receiving the scholarship. Applicants must be in their second or third year of studies and be available to attend the 10 week summer internship.

Another Security scholarship for students interested in US security and plan on getting into this field in college consider of the Lint Center for National Security Studies Scholarship Program. This is not a government sponsored program but deserves mentioning because it’s so closely related. It’s intent is to create awareness of national security so as to attract more young people to an occupation in national security. The center works to provide educational opportunities for those who want careers in security which also includes counterintelligence.

One of the nice things about this program is that those students who win an award will receive the financial benefits from the program for two years. Like bursaries common in other countries, students who win a DHS government scholarship will be required to work for at least one year at Homeland Security after graduation. All materials must be submitted to this program no later than January 12.

Tim Hortons Scholarship Easy for Employees

A Tim Hortons Scholarship is easy and only available to those if a present work relationship exist. It’s not really a coffee scholarship to study coffee either.

Tim Hortons Scholarship
Tim Hortons Scholarship

Unlike their direct competitor, Starbucks coffee, a Tim Hortons Scholarship is available directly through the company for any college an applicant is interested in attending. Unfortunately these programs are not going to be widely available as they are offered only to those people employed by the international coffee chain and their immediate family members. It really isn’t a coffee scholarship either where a student studies about coffee in college, but we will refer to it as a coffee college scholarship in honor of Tim Hortons. They are only easy scholarships to apply to if there is a present work relationship. Tim Hortons must feel that their employees are more worthy of this award than their customers who also drink their coffee on a daily basis. Never-the-less, this is how it works at this coffee giant whose loyal customers made them into the multi-billion company they are today.

If you are a student interested in going to college and either work at Tim Hortons or are the child of a Tim Hortons employee, you may find this coffee scholarship opportunity incredibly valuable, and you should almost certainly consider applying.

The Tim Hortons scholarship program is offered through collaboration between franchise owners who donate annually to the coffee scholarship making it available widely throughout the country where Tim Hortons exist. If you are a student looking for a job which will also offer you financial benefits relating to school, this may be an area that you should look into. While not necessarily your career end goal, Tim Hortons and coffee shops around the country often employ students because of the flexibility their hours offer and their willingness to work directly with a student’s work schedule. This coffee scholarship opportunity should not end a student’s interest in the Tim Horton scholarships as competition for the award will be high and it is always important to maximize the number of possible opportunities a student has. By increasing the number of random scholarships students apply to, they are effectively increasing their award opportunities and making available a greater number of potential financial aid resources.

In order to apply for the Tim Hortons scholarship you must be currently employed or the child of a current employee at a local franchise. One of the most important deciding factors for those who receive a Tim Hortons college scholarship is community engagement. Because of this, if a student is interested in seeking this funding opportunity out it will be incredibly important to volunteer at local community organizations doing outreach or service projects. While students should always maintain a great academic record, if they have the time the more volunteer activities they are involved with, the better their application will look when applying. Of coarse quality always trumps quantity, so community engagement cannot simply be limited to doing the bare minimum to get by. Getting involved in leadership roles, or helping to direct community efforts will be big boosts to an application, indicating to the selection committee that the student clearly has driven and dedication to community service.

Every year Tim Hortons scholarships are awarded to a total of 220 interested applicants, giving $1,000 to each towards their educational goals. While this certainly will not pay for the entirety of any student’s education, it is at least an important start. Students who are interested in this coffee scholarship opportunity should talk to their local franchise owner to get more details and an application. All materials for the Tim Hortons scholarship 2011 are due no later than April 12 of a given year.

The bulk of Tim Hortons coffee scholarships are awarded in Canada, but at least 20 awards are given out in the United States where the company has a much smaller national presence. This should not deter US citizens eligible for the program from applying, because it, like all easy scholarship programs, offers an opportunity that is too important to pass up. Students who apply for unknown scholarships are typically in dire need of financial aid and are looking for opportunities that do not include student loans as they would rather be debt free once they have graduated with their degree. Just because a scholarship is not widely available or is awarded on a highly competitive basis should not deter interested students. Those who award easy scholarships, especially private institutions, are interested in finding students with the drive to compete for awards, and step up to the plate with regards to challenges. If a student is not interested in competing with others for scholarship awards, they may as well stop looking altogether as they are unlikely to find programs which just give all applicants cash upon request.

Like programs of its kind, the Tim Hortons scholarship program is based on merit, and will always award those who the selection committee thinks are the most driven to success. Never underestimate your own actions – if you think you have the merit and work their, take a chance and apply, you may be surprised to find you will be awarded this easy college scholarship.

Unclaimed Scholarships from many Colleges

Unclaimed scholarships for college are found at many colleges today, but you may have to apply to the colleges first to see them and apply later then normal too.

Unclaimed Scholarships for College
Unclaimed Scholarships for College

Unclaimed scholarships for college are found at many college’s today, but you may have to apply to the colleges first to see them; and apply later then normal too.

Thats when the magic happens – after you apply and get to see your financial award letter.

These are the easy scholarships for college!

You sit back after you submit your online application and FAFSA to colleges you’re intersted in and wait for the colleges to work up your award letter.

Certain unclaimed scholarships for college are those financial awards you really don’t know about until after you have submited your application. They are given away to those who fall into a certain qualifying standard which colleges establish for themselves and can even change during the year so as to include more students for various reasons – which are usually based on low enrollment.

Remember; colleges need student enrollment to survive, and keep yearly federal student financial aid coming in from the government. So when enrollment is down they go into survival mode; which means they lower the qualifying gates to entice more students to attend.

They do this by lowering qualifying GPA’s for scholarships, grants and ACT scores. They may even create programs such as Opportunity Grants (which may mean someone with a 20 or below ACT and/or 2.00 GPA’s.

In other words they are allowing students in who previously didn’t qualify; and awarding them great financial aid packages!

This is all good as far as we are concerned on this website because our motto is that all higher education should be fully subsidized for any student who wants to attend college in order to better themselves in life.

When people do graduate form college, they enrich everyone around them, including themselves, and this tranlates into a better world for all of us.

Now; how do I know this?

I’m speaking from recent experience here. Let me give you a personal example of how it worked for me.

It just so happens that my twin children applied to a few colleges; and one with a 3.95 GPA, and a 28 ACT score got a financial aid award equal to my other child who had a 2.94 GPA and 20 ACT.

Now I might add that the 20 ACT score child applied to many colleges to find that; but he was persistant. We both tried to find colleges with falling enrollment over the last two years.

He also applied to colleges longer (into July) – which is the time that many falling enrollment universities start to lower their qualifying standards. This is the time they start to panic and will put every student just about in one way or another with all kinds of newly formed grants, scholarships and financial aid awards.

The alternative for them is possible extinction simply because operating cost can sink any ship – even colleges if there’s no captain on board overseeing their financials.

Remember colleges are a business, and students are the product that produce their revenue to sustain them. In fact these procedures are most likely already in place; which is why the 20 ACT got the same as the 28 ACT in the story above.

It might have taken longer to get, but this is how unclaimed scholarships can be gotten.

If students aren’t picky about where to attend college, then the above can happen to just about anyone.

Apply to universities and colleges with falling enrollments, and later might be better then sooner.

Unclaimed scholarships = easy scholarships.

This is how I accidentally ran across, and got unclaimed college scholarships with my two darlings – and you can too!

What a pleasant surprise!

The Zinch weekly scholarship itself is simple to apply to. You basically register and write a 3-sentence essay.

Yes – you will have to give them some personal information about yourself when you register and sign up for their weekly scholarship, but no more then what’s necessary.

By now you will have been used to the standard information you must provide for a chance at a student financial award so the information you have to give to be a part of this weekly scholarship will seem normal.

Zinch has many other scholarships to consider and not just their weekly scholarship. In fact you can be notified on when they are available so you can apply to them – via email or text!

Keep in mind Zinch wants to connect you with a college that is the right fit for you, and the colleges they work with are looking for a certain student profile to award the scholarship.

It seems like a win, win, win situation and it may be just that too! They only drawback is you may get a whole lot of emails from potential colleges who want you, but you have no interest in them whatsoever. This may be because you may not want to attend college where the scholarship is being awarded.

This is not a bad thing, but you must consider all your options and not just one or two when it comes to receiving easy unclaimed scholarships.

What is very appealing about the Zinch website is that it’s very uncluttered and easy on the eyes. It’s not confusing whatsoever, and it appears very easy to navigate through – which we love!

Zinch is simple scholarship browsing and you pretty much know what you want to do when you arrive on each page you come to. Less is more in describing the Zinch website.

You sometimes wonder why more websites aren’t like this. Most are not though.

We are not by the way connected to Zinch whatsoever, or receive any advertising monies to promote them. We are just writing about how we feel about them and their services.

If you want to apply to some quick and easy unclaimed scholarships you may want to first start off with their Zinch Weekly Scholarships, because from there everything else will flow very nicely. It doesn’t take much time at all either and you should be glad you did!

Tips for getting Unclaimed College Scholarships

When the scholarship season for the colleges ends this summer, there will be unused scholarships, or unclaimed scholarships with millions of dollars left over.

unclaimed college scholarships
Unclaimed Scholarship Tips

When the scholarship season for the colleges comes to a close in this summer, there will be unused scholarships, or unclaimed scholarships with millions of dollars left over.

According to the statistics only one student out of ten full time students studying at a four year college had some sort of scholarship, and the average amount for that is just $2,815.

ABCnews.go.com, how to pay for the college tuition fees is clearly on people’s minds.

The staff over at Scholarship America actually saw an increase in the number of calls that they receive from families and they also noticed that the callers had more urgency in their tones.

Even the Kentucky campus of Berea college, a college which gives all the accepted students full-tuition scholarships, saw a rise in 15% of applicants this year round and the number of families trying to get the free application of federal student aid almost jumped by 21%in the first three months of this year.

What are the reasons for this?

Students either don’t apply at the correct time or they are not applying for scholarships at all.

Some tips are:

  • · Start early: many of the scholarships are only available to junior year high schoolers. Also there are many scholarship sponsors who offer mentoring to these students and start tracking them in junior high.
  • · Avoid errors: errors should be avoided on your application at all costs. All the directions should be followed very closely and the essay should be proofed several times.
  • · Remember accomplishments: a high school student should keep in mind all the sports or community or science achievements that he or she has so that when the senior year comes they have a ready list to refer to.
  • · Shop around for Recommendation Letters: never assume that a favorite teacher will hand out a recommendation letter. Even if the teacher thinks that you’re the best student, the writing skills of the teacher may not be very good. So you should look for all the potential teachers who can write you a good recommendation letter.

Some examples of awards that get under-applied to are the AXA achievement scholarship awards $25,000 to students who help their community on a large scale. Another is the National Wild Turkey Federation which usually offers up to $10,000 to students who hold a valid license to hunt and are active in their communities.

According to www.investopedia.com, there is a myth that there are usually millions of dollars of unclaimed scholarships. This is a myth created by fraudulent organizations that usually charge students for scholarship searches. Most of these unrewarded scholarship monies usually comes from scholarship programs which are very restrictive and only a very small pool of applicants are actually eligible for it.

For example a scholarship for color blind left handed females from Wisconsin would probably result in funds which are left over. And families should be very careful because when they get desperate for these scholarships they might fall prey to educational internet scams, charging fees for information you can get entirely free off the internet yourself by just searching for it.

Marvin Carmichael, a past chairman of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has his viewpoint that gives a statistic that usually 85% of the scholarships which are termed to be unclaimed scholarships are basically employer backed education benefits. Many don’t apply to them and there are millions of dollars left unclaimed, or unused.

Also, the experts advise people not to pay private firms to look for these so called unclaimed scholarship dollars as you could do the same for yourself, by searching on the internet. Many of these offers are usually scams, and even the most legitimate of the searches don’t usually offer what a student himself could look up for free on the internet or from the school guidance counselor.

Some Ways of Finding out About Unclaimed College Scholarships

One of the biggest questions we get is how does a student go about finding some unclaimed scholarships so they can apply to them. We offer some advice on this!

unclaimed college scholarships
Finding Unclaimed Scholarships

One of the biggest questions we get is how does a student go about finding some unclaimed college scholarships so they can apply to them. It’s because in today’s time with increasing college inflation, the biggest hurdle faced by the parents and students alike is the payment of the college tuition – which is a large sum of money. They are weighed down with the problem of its payment.

To help ease away this load from their shoulders, students are desperate to find and apply for college unclaimed scholarships to pay off their college tuition fee. They somehow think this will be a quick and easy way to get financial aid for their college tuition.

If done the right way then it might be!

Let’s take a closer at ways of finding out about unclaimed college scholarships

There are millions of dollars which are invested in this noble cause of assisting students who are in need of financial help. The only obstacle is that most students are not aware that such scholarships even exist, hence they remain unclaimed and unused where the monies are put back in for the following year.

Some websites believe that unclaimed scholarships are more fables and legends than close to reality. Though some of the unclaimed scholarships DO exist and are granted to students, others stay unclaimed as the scholarship programs are way too strict in their terms and conditions for application in which most of the students who do apply are unable to meet these requirements set by the scholarship program leaving the scholarships unclaimed.

Unclaimed scholarships have money invested by private enterprises, foundations and private individuals. They have a fixed standard of selecting students for these scholarships to help pay their college fee. If that standard is met and the students qualify they attain the scholarships, but if they do not meet the criteria, then the scholarship is unclaimed.

There are many ways of finding out about these college scholarship programs. Students should be careful not to search for services that assure them to find un awarded scholarships against a fee as this information is accessible on the internet free of cost, all they need to do is to invest some time and effort in surfing the internet and looking for these scholarship programs and apply for them so that they can be possibly used, or else the funds in them remain unclaimed.

The first step is to start close – that is go ask the admissions office of the university where you intend to apply for a scholarship. Usually, big academic institutions do offer scholarships to students who achieve excellent grades in their class based on their merit. If this is not possible then pupils should ask their parents’ employers if they offer scholarships because private organizations may not have had many applicants in a year due to which their scholarships remain unclaimed, but by helping an employee’s child the scholarship funds can be used.

But the best way to get a remote scholarship where not many students apply to is look for them online and apply for as many as you can. They are listed more on the second or third page of search results for scholarships. By doing this, you have the option to the select the one that suits your needs better.

There is a common misconception of students when they apply for such unclaimed scholarships which is they are only granted to the ones who have a 4.0 GPA or get straight A’s in class. This is not always true.

The information in Mytowncolorado.com states that even if you’re an average student who is struggling through high school looking for ways to finance it, they needn’t worry as there are scholarships available for students who are exceptional and rare and have special hobbies. They may not have excellent grades but they have other things that make them deserving for such unconventional scholarships.

The website Message.snopes.com is an open forum site where people have discussed all their thoughts and opinions about unclaimed scholarships. Many say that these unclaimed scholarships are just myths and tales that do not really exist because however many times students apply for them; they get rejected as they just not seem to meet their standards.

There are also people who have commented that the main reason for these scholarships for being unclaimed is the eligibility factor as there are quite a few restrictions on eligibility hence if these restrictions were to be relaxed more applicants would become eligible each year for unclaimed college scholarships.

A few other people also commented that these scholarships are not available for traditional full time students but only for working students. This is the opinion of the people commenting on this website.

Bottom line on all this is that you must take the time to apply to as many as you can.

Your odds then increase on winning one!

About the Heart of America Foundation

The Heart of America Foundation dates back to 1997. The Foundation was originally established with the mission of teaching the values of the heart of the country while helping people learn that when they help others they can help themselves as well. The focus of the Foundation is to provide to children in need by providing the tools to read, succeed, and make a difference.

The Foundation’s goal of promoting literary has become particularly timely as research indicates that as many as 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes. Further research has found that children who do not develop basis literary skills by the time they enter school are far more likely to drop out of school later.

Low literary has also been shown to lead to poverty, unemployment, and crime. Studies have now confirmed that the availability of reading materials is one of the strongest predictors of a child’s ability to not only read, but to also succeed in school. In order to combat such problems, the Heart of America Foundation operates a number of early literary programs and other programs that specifically target literary and academic success.

The Heart of America Foundation scholarships recognize inspiration in individuals who have the odds stacked against them and never give up. It’s an excellent award from beginning to end in every way. Don’t let these become unclaimed scholarships for someone you know who may be a perfect fit for them – tell them about it, or apply to it yourself if you fit the scholarship criteria!

Union Plus Scholarships

There is plenty of great value offered through Union Plus Scholarships, so don’t let them go unclaimed if you are part of a union. This organization is dedicated to helping with funding for college due to the fact that it can help people towards a more secure future. The funds are offered for union members so that they can further pursue their education. The funds are also offered to the children of union members.

College Savings Grants

This is a funding source open to those that plan on opening up a new 529 Savings or pre-paid tuition plan after July 1st of 2011. This grant can be up to $500 per household, and it is a one-time grant. The beneficiary of the account must be under the age of 12 at the time when it is opened up to qualify. It is important to note that once the account is open, you have to contribute at least $1,000 to it by the time that beneficiary is ready to go to college.

In most states, you can open the 529 account with about $100 to start it. The $500 won’t be deposited into that account until the $1,000 threshold has been successfully deposited. Once that occurs, verification of the account balance has to be faxed to the program. It can take up to 5 weeks for the request to be completed and the grant money to be deposited into that account.

Services Offered from Union Plus Scholarships

In addition to the Union Plus Scholarships, they also offer plenty of valuable resources for students. Navigating the process of getting enrolled in school and paying for it can be stressful on your own. These services allow students to explore colleges, to get their questions answered, and even help with filling out applications for classes and for financial aid. There is also information offered on testing strategies for the ACT and SAT.

There is plenty to benefit from with these services through Union Plus Scholarships and their organization as a whole. If you need any assistance or you have suggestions they would like to hear from you.

Imagine America Foundation (IAF) Scholarships go Undiscovered

The goal of the IAF is to identify various types of unclaimed Imagine America Foundation Scholarships that students may need.

Who is IAF?

If you aren’t familiar with IAF, it stands for Imagine America Foundation which was established in 1982. It used to be known as the Career College Foundation. The goal of the organization is to identify various types of IAF scholarships that students may need. They provide reports about trends in the job market and career possibilities.

They strive to recognize those students that can make a significant contribution to a given field if they are able to secure enough funds to pay for their education. They offer a variety of scholarships which may become unclaimed because they are little known about. To date, they have offered more than $75 million on funds for the various unclaimed college scholarships they offer.

High School Scholarships

One of the categories offered by IAF is for high school students. High schools can nominate up to 5 students each school year for a IAF scholarship worth $1,000. There are numerous awards annually based on the amount of funding that is available and the number of nominees. The funds can be used at any college that is part of the Imagine America Scholarship Program.

The eligibility criteria for nomination are quite simple to meet. They include the student demonstrates a financial need, they have a GPA of 2.5 or better, they have demonstrated community involvement, and they have demonstrated they are very likely to complete their college education. Nominations are due by December 31st annually.

Scholarships for Adult Students

IAF understands that a large percentage of college students out there are non-traditional. This means they aren’t going right out of high school. Many adults return to college later in life to pursue a career or to change their career. That is why this organization offers some IAF scholarships that are only available to adult students.

Non-traditional students may qualify for a grant of $1,000. An assessment has to be completed that will determine if Imagine American Foundation deems that adult as one that is very likely to complete their post-educational goals. This is a one-time grant that can be applied for any time during the course of an accredited adult education program.
Applicants must be at least 19 years of age with a high school diploma or a GED. The college that they are attending must also be participating g in the Imagine America Scholarship Program. You can click on a list of those schools from the website.

Grants for Military

IAF also offers grants for those that have served in the military to help them pay for their college education. The goal is to help them successfully make the transition from military life to civilian life. The Imagine America’s Military Award Program was established in 2004. Any military person that is active duty, a veteran, in the reserves, or that has been honorably discharged can apply for a $1,000 grant.

Applicants for this grant money must be able to show financial need. They must also demonstrate that there is a very good chance they would be able to successfully complete their post-secondary educational goals. They also have to be enrolled or enrolling in a college that participates in the IAF scholarship programs.

LDRSHIP Award

This was established by IAF in 2004 to honor those students that have also served honorably in the United States military. They may be currently enrolled in a college that is part of the program. The award can be up to $2,500 and it is open to those that are active military, retired military, that have been honorably discharged, or those that are in the reserves.

Gail Benjamin Fellowship

IAF is also one of the supporters and contributors of the Gail Benjamin Fellowship. This offers funds for women and minorities to be able to attend the annual APSCU (Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities) leadership conference. The conference location varies each year, but for 2012 it will be held in Potomac, Maryland.

The above are all perfect examples of unclaimed scholarships which go undiscovered. They are the kind that many students don’t apply too simply because they are obscure in nature and hard to find unless you read about them (like here). Read more at Imagine America Foundation scholarships.
