A previous winner of the award represents a strong example of what it may take to win such an award. Having at least 8,000 hours of community service formally logged as well as being responsible for raising more than $40,000 to fight malaria, the 2010 winner is a shining star with regards to her volunteer services. All students must be nominated for this award and nominees will need to be high school seniors. There are no restrictions on who may nominate students. All nomination materials must be submitted by September 1.

Another great source for students who have a lot of community service hours under their belt would be the Lowe’s Scholarship program. This community service scholarship provides (140) $2,500 awards to students every year making this award an easier scholarship to get because so many are given out each year. In order to be eligible for the program students will need to be high school seniors with at least a 3.25 grade point average who will be able to show an incredible commitment to community service throughout their young lives.

Alongside the Lowe’s community service scholarship is the Carl Buchan program which gives out (50) different $5,000 scholarships to deserving students. All applicants interested in this latter program will need to be high school seniors graduating or college undergrad students who have gone to school for at least one full time semester. This particular community service scholarship is reserved only for Lowe’s employees who have maintained a 3.25 gpa while also having a strong commitment to community service. The deadline for these to programs is normally in late February opening to interested applicants the prior year in mid-December.

Applicants to these community service scholarships and those like them will need to have a strong commitment. This sort of commitment rarely comes out of some interest in scoring points with scholarship committees later on. All applications will need to be submitted online and mailed in applications will not be accepted by the program. Apart from the sheer number of awards available, previous Buick Achievers Scholarship Program award winners will be able to apply to renew their scholarships every year. So long as academic criteria are met and students remain in need of financial assistance, renewal of scholarship awards should be a relatively cut and dry process. Of course students will need to maintain their full time status and continue working towards a major which meets STEM requirements. Until now Pell grants have been available for summer educational experiences, but they were recently defunded. This has seriously limited funds available for summer students. Local companies and the universities themselves often offer summer school scholarships or financial aid for these opportunities.

This again cannot be left to last minute or you will certainly be paying out-of-pocket for any expenses you incur. Current college students as well as high school seniors with a 2.5 GPA in academic subjects may apply for the Atheist scholarship. The award is based on the applicant’s activism and a 500-1000 word essay. The deadline for application is January 31 and in addition to the monetary award, students receive a free trip to the American Atheists’ National Convention.

The American Atheists Founders’ Scholarship grants a first place award of $2000 and runner-up prize(s) of $1000 to atheist students. Similarly to the Chinn Scholarship, current college students or high school students entering college next year are eligible as long as they are Atheist, can demonstrate activism and a 2.5 minimum GPA. The application deadline is January 31, 2011 and decisions will be made regarding decisions by March 1, 2011.

The Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship is available to students who are secular humanists studying at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Founded by Herb Silverman, who is also a retired math professor from the college and the president of the Secular Coalition for America, the Agnostic scholarship honors academic effort and financial need in a student who offers promise in the area of critical thinking and is a secular humanist. This is a $1700 renewable scholarship as long as a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

The Mark Twain Scholarship for Atheist students is available to freethinkers who completely reject anything that inhibits any type of freedom, be it religious or otherwise. Recipients must attend a secular university or college and major in one of the following areas: arts and humanities, applied arts, education, science, social sciences, mathematics, engineering or law. An essay is also required for this $300-$500 scholarship. The deadline for one of the eight Agnostic scholarships is December 31 of each year.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sponsors several essay contests for Atheist college scholarships annually. All of the following contests reward several winners with the same monetary amounts per placement: first prize – $2,000, second prize – $1,000, third – $500, fourth – $300, and honorable mention – $200. The 17th Herbert Bushong essay contest honors free thinkers in the area of religion and offers several awards based on essay responses. The 32nd FFRF Michael Hakeem Memorial College Essay Competition is for students in North America under the age of 25 and rewards students for choosing reason over faith. Conversely, the FFRF Brian Bolton Graduate/Mature student essay competition is specifically for graduate students and adult students over the age of 25 and this year the essay topic is a focused piece on the separation of church and state.

As you can see many of the unknown scholarships deemed atheist or agnostic champion freethinking and science and reason over faith. Due to this, be prepared with evidence of activism in your school and out, be ready to explain your rationale and beliefs (of lack thereof), and be equipped to write persuasively on a related topic, as many of these Agnostic Atheist scholarships are essay based.

*The Ambassadorial Spirit People to People scholarship provides $1,000 to 20 different students every year. The deadline for this program is March 18. Financial need must be demonstrated.
*Friends of Ambassadors People to People scholarships are given out to a varying number of students every year in the amount of $1,000 per students. Application materials must be turned in no later than January 11. This is another financial need People to People scholarship.
*The Cellhire Techno-Teen People to People scholarship awards six different $1,000 scholarships. While this is listed as a 2011 People to People scholarship, there is a possibility that it will reopen in 2012. Students should check with the website to determine whether or not it will continue is 2012. The deadline for this program is listed as March 18 and financial need is not an eligibility requirement.

On top of offering People to People scholarships, the organization also offers interest free loans to students on an international basis. Other various scholarships are sometimes offered by People to People International such as the Joyce C. Hall College Scholarship. However these programs are not necessarily continuous and no updated 2011 scholarship applications have been posted on this particular program. Other programs include the James Eunice Doty Congressional Award Scholarship and the Mary Jean Eisenhower Partner in Peace Award. Like the Joyce C. Hall People to People scholarship no 2011 date has been listed for these programs and the yearly deadline for the Mary Jean Eisenhower Award has already passed suggesting that it may not be renewed. However students should always check with the People to People scholarship website to get updates on these programs and scholars with a strong academic record should apply should they reopen.

As long as a sponsor awards many scholarships yearly for students like the People to People Scholarships do, then these are the easiest scholarships to apply to and get simply because of the odds being in your favor.

Subway employees and their children are eligible for a subway college scholarship if a few requirements are met. Employees must have worked for Subway for at least 15 hours a week for six months and parent employees with children seeking a scholarship must work for a minimum of 30 hours a week. Students must be attend an accredited two- or four- year college anywhere in the world and maintain a 2.75 or higher GPA. Offering these unknown scholarships coincides with Subway’s emphasis on family. They seek to build strong relationships between all employees, the community, and the business, as individuals within a family must. The Subway Corporation wants to help take care of the people who have helped to make Subway a success.

Most Subway scholarships are $1000 and are distributed to the college of choice in two semester increments, during the student’s freshmen year. It is important to check the fast food scholarships by Subway specifically available in your state of residence, as some states may have Sub scholarships that range up to $3000. Just because students did not perform well in their secondary school does not necessarily mean they will continue on to do poorly in college. Many students find it difficult to concentrate on the somewhat limited curriculum offered at high schools and, upon entering college then finding a major which suits their interests, begin performing much better as get into a university.

Unfortunately getting into college and getting access to scholarships can be difficult for a student who did not perform so well in high school. On top of the 52 awards given out, the pool of winners is entered into a second contest from which 10 different people will be selected to win an additional $15,000 in scholarship aid. Applications must be completed online through the UNCF scholarship website and are due no later than April 5, 2011.

Students who are enrolled at Cedarville University may be excited to know that a Kroger scholarship is offered directly through their institution. The award for this program is $3,500 and is open to students in the liberal arts, business and pharmacy majors. In order to be eligible for the program students must be of an ethnic minority, have a 2.5 grade point average, be available for work up to forty hours a week and have reliable transportation in order to make it to and from the work place. Making the deadline for this Kroger scholarship is as simple as making Cedarville University’s deadline for applications for financial aid.

Considering the previously mentioned UFCW program, though not a direct Kroger scholarship, the scholarship will be open to most Kroger employees. It is available to any member of the UFCW who has belonged to the organization since January 1 of a given year. Children of UFCW members are eligible to apply if they are under the age of 20 before May 31. The program awards $2,000 for recipients each year they are in college so long as they have maintained standards laid out in the acceptance agreement. This Verizon scholarship program is available to high school seniors who are children of Verizon employees who are planning to attend a four year university in 2011. In order to be eligible for the program applicants must be the child of an employee for a formal Verizon company such as Verizon Wireless or Verizon Corporate. Further the employee must be the legal guardian or parent of the student applying and the student must currently be in high school. This Verizon scholarship is available for those students who are children of Verizon employees in the United States but is also available for those employed outside of US territory.

Finally the program is only available for those children of employees who have been on the job for 90 days or more. Financial need is one of the most important factors in determining who will be awarded a Verizon scholarship. The full Verizon award is $20,000 which will be given out in amounts of $2,500 for each semester a student attends a university and maintains strong academic progress. All material must be submitted no later than February 1 and award decisions will be made by April.

Another Verizon scholarship which has some sign of great stability is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship which awards $2,000 to winning recipients. In order to be eligible for this phone scholarship all students must have attended Verizon’s yearly Tu Mandas workshops held at local high schools around the country and be a legal resident of the United States. Applicants must be preparing to enroll full time at a community college or four year university in 2011 and have a grade point average of no lower than 2.5. This particular Verizon scholarship is only available through five different high schools – two in New York, one in Washington DC and two in Pennsylvania, see website for specifics. On top of these requirements, students must submit a federal financial aid request for 2011. The deadline for this Verizon scholarship program is May 25, 2011.

There are other Verizon scholarships which may be available in 2012 but are currently closed for 2011 with no signs of being renewed. These include the NAAAP scholarship from Verizon and the UNCF Black History Month Essay Contest. While these programs have not been formally selected for renewal by the Verizon Foundation, students should check in with the UNCF and NAAAP websites throughout 2011 just to be on the safe side. It is always worth keeping up to date with programs like these because, while they may not be renewed, it would be relatively silly to miss out on a Verizon scholarship simply because an individual did not feel like taking a couple extra seconds out of their day to double check a renewal status.
