what are unclaimed scholarships
Definition of Unclaimed Scholarships

There are many definitions of what unclaimed scholarships are, and there really is no one answer that is correct. This is because unclaimed scholarship monies come from many sources and there are many ways of finding it, so you will have a variety of meanings for it. Bottom line is it all does exist based on what your definition of it is and it is monies not found and used yet for college.

If you look at just what the word ‘unclaimed’ means you will see it’s an adjective only; and that the definition for unclaimed is:  ‘unknown, usually by choice’. This could indicate for example that a student won a scholarship and they decide not to claim it.

If you look at the Antonyms for unclaimed they are: discovered, identified, known, named. This could mean that a who student wins a scholarship, is identified and known who it is; and is named publicly.

The Synonyms for the word ‘unclaimed’ are many such as : incognito, undisclosed, innominate, nameless, unnamed, pseudo, pseudonymous, secret, so and so, such and such, unacknowledged, unattested, unavowed, unclaimed , uncredited, undesignated, unidentified, unsigned, unspecified, what’s his/her name, whatchamacallit, you know who…. you get the point!

Some people or students seem to think that just because a scholarship is not claimed than anyone can lay claim to it very quick and easily as their own if they discover it. Well, this seems too easy and unrealistic to say the lest. I guess if the student applies to it and qualifies for it then they can easily win it. But to just to try to fill the vacuum of the student who doesn’t claim it without qualifying for it would be wishful thinking and actually trying to get something for nothing. But there are some students who think this way.

A basic and safe way to describe unclaimed scholarships may be just that it’s monies for college that has not been given away or awarded yet, and that you can apply for it once you discover it – period!  The unclaimed monies are sitting their waiting to be awarded to the right student who fits what the scholarship sponsor is looking for and they will not award it until they have a perfect match for it! This means you still have a chance of getting it if it hasn’t been assigned or awarded at that time.

It’s UNCLAIMED as of yet.

If you have a better definition of unclaimed scholarships, or you actually know of some unclaimed college scholarship monies please leave your written comment in the comment section at the end of this page.

If you do –  we will respond to you on where you can find more unclaimed scholarship monies!

College Savings Grants

This is a funding source open to those that plan on opening up a new 529 Savings or pre-paid tuition plan after July 1st of 2011. Once that occurs, verification of the account balance has to be faxed to the program. It can take up to 5 weeks for the request to be completed and the grant money to be deposited into that account.

Imagine America Foundation (IAF) Scholarships go Undiscovered

The goal of the IAF is to identify various types of unclaimed Imagine America Foundation Scholarships that students may need.

Who is IAF?

If you aren’t familiar with IAF, it stands for Imagine America Foundation which was established in 1982. It used to be known as the Career College Foundation. The goal of the organization is to identify various types of IAF scholarships that students may need. They provide reports about trends in the job market and career possibilities.

They strive to recognize those students that can make a significant contribution to a given field if they are able to secure enough funds to pay for their education. They offer a variety of scholarships which may become unclaimed because they are little known about. To date, they have offered more than $75 million on funds for the various unclaimed college scholarships they offer.

High School Scholarships

One of the categories offered by IAF is for high school students. High schools can nominate up to 5 students each school year for a IAF scholarship worth $1,000. There are numerous awards annually based on the amount of funding that is available and the number of nominees. The funds can be used at any college that is part of the Imagine America Scholarship Program.

The eligibility criteria for nomination are quite simple to meet. They include the student demonstrates a financial need, they have a GPA of 2.5 or better, they have demonstrated community involvement, and they have demonstrated they are very likely to complete their college education. Nominations are due by December 31st annually.

Scholarships for Adult Students

IAF understands that a large percentage of college students out there are non-traditional. This means they aren’t going right out of high school. Many adults return to college later in life to pursue a career or to change their career. That is why this organization offers some IAF scholarships that are only available to adult students.

Non-traditional students may qualify for a grant of $1,000. An assessment has to be completed that will determine if Imagine American Foundation deems that adult as one that is very likely to complete their post-educational goals. This is a one-time grant that can be applied for any time during the course of an accredited adult education program.
Applicants must be at least 19 years of age with a high school diploma or a GED. The college that they are attending must also be participating g in the Imagine America Scholarship Program. You can click on a list of those schools from the website.

Grants for Military

IAF also offers grants for those that have served in the military to help them pay for their college education. The goal is to help them successfully make the transition from military life to civilian life. The Imagine America’s Military Award Program was established in 2004. Any military person that is active duty, a veteran, in the reserves, or that has been honorably discharged can apply for a $1,000 grant.

Applicants for this grant money must be able to show financial need. They must also demonstrate that there is a very good chance they would be able to successfully complete their post-secondary educational goals. They also have to be enrolled or enrolling in a college that participates in the IAF scholarship programs.

LDRSHIP Award

This was established by IAF in 2004 to honor those students that have also served honorably in the United States military. They may be currently enrolled in a college that is part of the program. The award can be up to $2,500 and it is open to those that are active military, retired military, that have been honorably discharged, or those that are in the reserves.

Gail Benjamin Fellowship

IAF is also one of the supporters and contributors of the Gail Benjamin Fellowship. This offers funds for women and minorities to be able to attend the annual APSCU (Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities) leadership conference. The conference location varies each year, but for 2012 it will be held in Potomac, Maryland.

The above are all perfect examples of unclaimed scholarships which go undiscovered. They are the kind that many students don’t apply too simply because they are obscure in nature and hard to find unless you read about them (like here). Read more at Imagine America Foundation scholarships.

In-Course Scholarships that are Unclaimed

Many schools also offer in-course scholarshipsas a way of offering something to support those that are excelling. These unclaimed scholarships are merit based.

What are In-Course Scholarships?

Doing extremely well in your given course of study is something you should strive for. Not only does it help you to do well in the program, but it also helps you in your chosen career when you graduate. Many schools also offer in-course scholarships too as a way of offering something to support those that are excelling. These nameless, or unclaimed scholarships are merit based, and they can make the difference between someone being able to continue their education or not.

The requirements of in-course scholarships though can vary based on the school offering them or the provider of the funds. They generally will require the applicants to have a very high GPA of 3.0 or higher. The student usually needs to be enrolled in the program at least 12 credit hours.

There are also those in-course scholarships that require a department leader in that area of study to recommend students for the funding. These are students that have shown leadership, a desire to learn, and that have excellent grades.

Application Process for in-course scholarships

At many educational entities, there is no application that a student needs to complete. If they meet the criteria with their grades then they will automatically get the funding. There is no competition and there is no limit to the number of them as each student that is merit approved for the funds will get them.

Other in-course scholarships though do require an application to be completed. This can include those that are merit based and those that are recommended by faculty. It is important to find out if the funds offered do require an application or not. Too often, students that would qualify for them don’t get them because they didn’t know they needed an application and when they did find out, the date for turning them in had already passed.

For the majority of the in-course scholarships offered, the deadline to apply is May 31st. However, there could be exceptions so make sure you look into them. Here are some of the common unknown scholarships worth having a peak at to see if you would qualify.

*Below are some in-course scholarships that are unclaimed.

There can be one or more recipients of this scholarship depending on funds and application volume. The dollar amount awarded depends on financial need and the available funding.

The Mrs. Anne Greskiw Scholarship

This in-course scholarship find is for those in the field of pre-med. There are two scholarships awarded annually in the amount of $1,650 each. Students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of the program. They also need to provide a written essay about what their plans are for their medical career. Students that show a significant financial need will be a priority with these funds.

TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Scholarship

This is an unspecified scholarship offered to a 3rd year student in any field that is in very good standing. A stipulation is that the applicants must be the child or grandchild of school alumni. The award is a single $1,000 unknown scholarship annually.

Tom Perry Award

This is an in-course scholarship of $1,050 for a student that has demonstrated a significant contribution to the betterment of the environment through a non-profit charitable organization. There is an application required along with a letter of recommendation from that organization.

In-course scholarships can go unclaimed very easily because many are nameless awards making them invisible scholarships to students who are looking for them.

University of the People Tuition Free Scholarships – Weird or Ahead of Their Time!

Maybe the UoP tuition free scholarships are just plain weird scholarships; or they are ahead of their time and this is just a glimps of the future.

weird scholarships
UoP Tuition Free Scholarships

Maybe the UoP tuition free scholarshipsare just plain weird; or they are ahead of their time and this is just a glimpse of what future college student aid will be like. As the first tuition-free, non-profit university operating online the University of the People offers a unique and rewarding opportunity for students to attain the college education they desire with their tuition free scholarships. This is so strange in todays times that it does not seem possible, but with tuition cost rising out of the reach of most students heading off to college, we may see more of these types of college programs being accepted by accredited educators to make this the accepted standard – and the norm. Let’s see how it works.

Students who enroll in this school do not pay any tuition and are also not required to pay anything for study materials as they are completely free. There are modest fees which do apply at the school and range between $10 and $100. These fees are typically charged for taking tests as the completion of each course. Fees at University of the People are based on a sliding scale dependent upon the country in which the student lives. A nominal application processing fee is also charged when applying to the school. That fee may vary between $10 and $50 based on a sliding scale based on present economic situations in the applicant’s country or place of residence.

Students who are considering attending University of the People should understand that at the current time the school offers four degrees. Those degrees are: Associate of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Associate of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. The school offers two programs; computer science and business administration.

The University of the People is in the process of applying to receive accreditation and may be offering degrees in the near future. Prospective students should be aware that until or if the school does not obtain accreditation, other colleges and universities may not accept academic credits from University of the People on a transfer basis.

The University of the People was established on the principles of peer-to-peer learning and e-learning, along with Open Educational Resources and open-source technology. UoPeople was specifically designed to offer access to an undergraduate degree program regardless of an individual’s geographic, societal or financial restraints. The school was originally founded in 2009 by Shai Reshef, an educational entrepreneur. To date, the University has partnered with New York University and Yale University. Students from 130 countries have been accepted at the University of the People.

The students of the university form its core as they all share common goals, which are to make a difference, become leaders and succeed in academics in order to create a better life as well as local community and ultimately, a better world. Through its unique approach, the University of the People offers an educational opportunity that provides students with the essential tools they need; whether they are beginning, changing or advancing their careers.

University of the People is able to offer tuition-free online learning a realistic option for students from around the globe through a groundbreaking educational philosophy. Qualified students who have graduated high school, have sufficient English skills and a computer and Internet access are accepted to the university. Courses are only offered in English. A large portion of the credo at the school is students assisting one another. Social networking plays a critical role. Students at the university are required to participate fully in discussions as well as answer questions that may be posed by students in forums and groups, in addition to faculty.

The student community at University of the People is divided into several classes or sub-groups consisting of between 20 and 30 students who participate in online courses. The learning week at the school begins at night between Wednesday and Thursday and will end the following Wednesday. Study units for classes are made available one week at a time. All courses at University of the People are 5 credit hours.

One of the most common questions about University of the People is how the school is able to offer a tuition-free or guaranteed scholarship. The school is able to do this by functioning on an extremely limited budget; but without sacrificing any educational quality. Instead a collaborative learning model is used while also taking full advantage of open-source technology, open educational resources and volunteer contributions from around the globe. Students are able to exchange ideas, share resources, discuss topics on a weekly basis, submit completed assignments and submit exams through online study communities.

The tuition-free learning environment at University of the People is supported by some of the most respected scholars in the world. That faculty is composed of both active as well as retired professors and other professionals. This is why they may NOT be viewed as weird scholarships being offered by a strange student aid institution, and becoming the slowly acceptable way of receiving a college degree and paying for it. It very well may be coming sooner than many of us think and it couldn’t happen sooner. Education should be free for all those who want it. Weird scholarships? We don’t think so – just a smart and financially acceptable way to pay for a higher education for those who want it.

Boren Scholarships & Fellowships

The goal of Boren Scholarships and Fellowships is to give students the chance to learn about languages in other parts of the world. These little known scholarships and fellowships are offered to both graduate and undergraduate students. The program is designed to focus on those areas where the languages are going to help with National security and other elements. The ability to speak a foreign language can open up plenty of jobs for someone around the world.

The Boren scholarships are offered to undergraduate students and the fellowships are reserved for graduate students. With either program, the recipients get the opportunity to study language in one of many different countries. The goal is to create a structure that allows for effective communication to take place around the world. While learning the new language, students also get a first hand chance to evaluate and be part of the culture in that country. Such an experience is very different than just reading about a culture in books.

To apply for the Boren scholarships for language studies an individual must be a US citizen at the time of their application. They must have a high school diploma or GED. They must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in the USA. They can’t graduate until the language scholarship has been completed. They must apply to and be accepted to a program of study outside of the USA.

The amount of each obscure language scholarship is up to $20,000 to pay for the cost of learning in one of the designated countries. The goal is to expand the number of people in the USA that are able to understand languages that aren’t as popular as others. These languages include Arabic, Russian, and Swahili.

The amount of each fellowship is up to $30,000 to pay for the cost of learning or expanding knowledge of a particular language. Some of the counties offered include Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The goal is for these languages to help reduce the challenges on global levels including economics and politics due to the barriers different languages can present.

Both offer an amazing opportunity to learn a new language and to become a part of a solution for breaking down global barriers. Those accepted will be determined based on their accomplishments academically, their contributions to the community, and their outlook about reaching out to new communities and cultures.

David L. Boren is the creator of these language scholarships and fellowships. The reason it was implemented was to offer the USA more individuals that have the abilities to speak various languages. Their contributions can help to properly represent countries that have been neglected in the past in terms of USA students studying in such locations. The partnerships that have been created with other countries through the Boren programs is exceptional and continues to grow all the time.

Through the Institute of International Education, the Boren scholarships and fellowships are administered. Each year over 18,000 students get the opportunity to study in another country and to learn their language and culture. As a result all citizens of the USA benefit due to the International competency that is being created. There are many jobs with the USA government and private businesses that a person can qualify for due to being fluent in a particular language.

The application deadline for Boren Scholarships and Fellowships is the last day of January for fellowships and February 9th for these unknown scholarships. No late applications will be reviewed so it is very important to make sure they are done on time. Applications can be completed online. On the other hand, there is talk about such scams you have to be aware of. What many people think of with unclaimed college scholarships is that someone is just trying to make money, promising them something they really can’t provide.

Don’t pay for Unclaimed Scholarship Money

There are some unclaimed scholarship money out there, but you should be looking for them on your own. Don’t pay a service to do the work for you. When you go that route, you may as well kiss your money goodbye. They are going to give you the same information they give to everyone else. There is also a very good chance that the information isn’t current or accurate.

As a good rule of thumb, you should never be paying for the ability to find out about unclaimed or unknown scholarships. You should never be changed any processing fee either for submitting your application or so it can be reviewed.

It is important to talk about why there are unclaimed scholarships out there. It has to do with the stigma for unfound scholarships. People often don’t apply if they don’t have a very high GPA or they aren’t an outstanding athlete. They don’t think that they are going to be the one that will get accepted, so they simply don’t apply. This could be an unclaimed scholarship.

Unknown Scholarships are Unclaimed Scholarships

Other obscure scholarships aren’t claimed because they aren’t as well known. You have to really dig deep to find them. They won’t be found on page one of the search engine results. However, if you go about 10 or 15 pages deep you will start to find unknown scholarships offered that people don’t know so much about.

Smart Searching may be Key to an Unclaimed Scholarship

There are even those offered only for left handed individuals so narrow down the search and you will find more.

The idea is to get your hands on those lessor known scholarship details for those that very few will be applying for. Chances are you will have far less competition getting a unused scholarship for someone that is over 6 foot 5 inches than you will getting one for people that have a 2.5 GPA or higher.

You may love to skateboard, and there may be unclaimed college scholarships for that. You don’t have to limit athlete funding just to playing college sports such as football or basketball. There are so many amazing scholarships out there that you may be able to apply for, but dig deep with your search browser to find them.

Applying Correctly for Unclaimed College Scholarships

Once you find them, make sure you look over all the criteria. You don’t want to blow your chances of being awarded such funds and find out later you never really had a chance because you failed to read the proper application guidelines and incorrectly filled out your scholarship forms. Make sure you complete the application completely. Turn it over to make sure there isn’t more that goes on the back side of it. A late application or one with missing information is going to be completely ignored. Make sure you mail it in plenty of time for arrival.

You want to make sure you are able to submit the necessary documents along with the application. If they want references, an essay, examples, of leadership, etc. you must include them. Finally, don’t overlook the application deadline date for submitting it. Believe it or not many scholarships are unclaimed simply because students failed to complete applications properly so no awards were given out that year.

It can take time and effort to find those unclaimed scholarships, but don’t give up.
