Claim Verizon Scholarships before their Gone

Verizon scholarships come in a number of forms from those for children of Verizon employees to targeted ethnic minorities.

Verizon Scholarships

Apart from being one of the largest nationwide mobile and landline telephone service providers, the company Verizon provides its own Verizon scholarships every year. Through the company’s charitable arm, the Verizon Foundation, Verizon scholarships come in a number of forms from those for children of Verizon employees to targeted ethnic minorities. Some of these programs are not promised on into the future and the Verizon Foundation has shifted their giving focus several times in the past, so students interested in applying for potential programs should act while they are available. Because of the often temporary nature of the Verizon scholarship, or at the very least the lack of a promised future for such programs, students should be weary of old information making sure to check in on scholarship websites to double check the current status of a given program.

The two most stable Verizon college scholarships appear to be the employee scholarship and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund programs, though the National Association of Asian American Professionals has a program available until 2012. Interested students should look directly to the Verizon Foundation or do yearly searches regarding Verizon scholarships in order to be sure they have the most current information regarding available programs.

The Verizon scholarship for employees has been in place for a number of years and represents the most common or long lasting program the Verizon Foundation offers. This Verizon scholarship program is available to high school seniors who are children of Verizon employees who are planning to attend a four year university in 2011. In order to be eligible for the program applicants must be the child of an employee for a formal Verizon company such as Verizon Wireless or Verizon Corporate. Further the employee must be the legal guardian or parent of the student applying and the student must currently be in high school. This Verizon scholarship is available for those students who are children of Verizon employees in the United States but is also available for those employed outside of US territory.

Finally the program is only available for those children of employees who have been on the job for 90 days or more. Financial need is one of the most important factors in determining who will be awarded a Verizon scholarship. The full Verizon award is $20,000 which will be given out in amounts of $2,500 for each semester a student attends a university and maintains strong academic progress. All material must be submitted no later than February 1 and award decisions will be made by April.

Another Verizon scholarship which has some sign of great stability is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarship which awards $2,000 to winning recipients. In order to be eligible for this phone scholarship all students must have attended Verizon’s yearly Tu Mandas workshops held at local high schools around the country and be a legal resident of the United States. Applicants must be preparing to enroll full time at a community college or four year university in 2011 and have a grade point average of no lower than 2.5. This particular Verizon scholarship is only available through five different high schools – two in New York, one in Washington DC and two in Pennsylvania, see website for specifics. On top of these requirements, students must submit a federal financial aid request for 2011. The deadline for this Verizon scholarship program is May 25, 2011.

There are other Verizon scholarships which may be available in 2012 but are currently closed for 2011 with no signs of being renewed. These include the NAAAP scholarship from Verizon and the UNCF Black History Month Essay Contest. While these programs have not been formally selected for renewal by the Verizon Foundation, students should check in with the UNCF and NAAAP websites throughout 2011 just to be on the safe side. It is always worth keeping up to date with programs like these because, while they may not be renewed, it would be relatively silly to miss out on a Verizon scholarship simply because an individual did not feel like taking a couple extra seconds out of their day to double check a renewal status.

Unclaimed Scholarships

Unclaimed scholarships for college do exist but not in abundance. In fact you will have to stumble across them to have any chance of really finding them.

unclaimed-scholarships
Unclaimed Scholarships

Unclaimed scholarships for college do exist but not in abundance. In fact you will have to stumble across them to have any chance of really finding them. Students looking for financial assistance are often looking everywhere they possibly can to root out additional sources of funding. Many of these students have gone through the normal check – looking at the demographic characteristics, checking out career oriented opportunities, consulting with local financial aid offices or considering offerings by individual departments at universities. Still they may come up short and begin searching one last time before they give up and turn to student loans to fill their remaining aid gap.

Unclaimed scholarships are, in reality, fairly rare – most scholarship institutions publicize the heck out of their programs and generally have more applicants than they can afford to cover. Though not entirely a myth, the idea that billions of dollars goes unrewarded every year in the United States is incredibly incorrect, though there are in fact some unclaimed scholarships out there. Students interested in unclaimed scholarships will want to get kind of weird with their searches, looking for quirks that may not have occurred to them originally in their research. Consider for instance tall scholarships or the single left-handed scholarship offered from Juniata University – though these programs rarely qualify as unclaimed scholarships, they are less frequently taken advantage of when compared to larger, nationally offered programs.

The myth which underlies the idea of unclaimed scholarships comes from a number of sources, but most often cited is the 1983 report from the National Commission on Student Financial Assistance. Other claims come from fairly shaky ground in which lose statistical methods have been applied in order to work out an overall lack of funding. Remember the game some kids used to play called Telephone? The effect here is similar – over time as these reports and data have made their rounds from person to person, the information has been exaggerated or used incorrectly, leading to the widespread belief that unclaimed scholarships are incredibly common, when in fact they are unknown scholarships to almost all students and will only reveal themselves by actively looking for student aid.

There is no direct evidence that popular foundations, which are often incredibly overwhelmed with responses to their scholarships offerings, or even other groups, have billions of dollars of unused scholarship money each year. One of the things this myth does get right, however, is that there is pretty clear evidence that people do not often take advantage of employer tuition programs which, apart from a blip in the employee manual, are often left out of an employee’s general knowledge. As a result these programs often end up as unclaimed scholarships.

It is not uncommon for even small businesses to offer tuition assistance programs either in the form of direct scholarship aid or tuition reimbursement, and interested students should either talk to a human resources person or consult their employee manuals for more information. While in some places these programs are widely used, it may be unlikely that say a gas station clerk would guess that their company offers tuition reimbursement programs, which leaves some of these employment areas having unclaimed college scholarships.

Unclaimed scholarships do exist, but they are rare and students will have to do some digging in order to turn them up. Some of these programs come from schools where, as a fictional example, a scholarship for a blind individual may exist but no students on the campus meet the criteria needed to take advantage of the program. Instances of unclaimed college scholarships are normally related to heavy eligibility restrictions which limit applicant pools or local availability where no local person meets the necessary requirements to get access to a program.

Unless a student is so incredibly desperate for financial aid that they will consider a college based on a single unclaimed scholarship which they happen to have the eligibility for, these programs should not really concern students who otherwise would not be able to get an award.

While it can be hard at times to find all of the financial assistance students will need in order to afford college capably, they should focus directly on more attainable programs instead of searching for the rare or extra quirky unclaimed scholarship money that may, on some off-chance, be available somewhere. Of course if a student has some extra time and is still considering their options for educational institutions checking in on what unclaimed scholarships may be available is certainly a good option, but otherwise this sort of search results in a general waste of time and energy.

Unclaimed Scholarships can be Public or Private

Unclaimed scholarships are simply scholarships that either aren’t well known enough to be claimed or are too specific to be claimed by large amounts of people.

unclaimed-scholarships
Unclaimed Scholarships

College can be a fun time for students, but paying for it can be a hassle. Luckily, there are many unclaimed scholarships that can be collected to help offset the staggering price of college tuition – you just have to find them thats’s all. Unclaimed college scholarships are simply scholarships that either aren’t well known enough to be claimed, or are too specific to be claimed by large amounts of people. Unclaimed scholarships are a great source of college money as they oftentimes are quite easy to claim, but the only hard part is finding them in the first place. Many of these unclaimed scholarships are very specific and target only a small portion of the general population, and they often aren’t advertised or marketed as heavily as the more popular scholarships. This makes them harder to find, but if you do get lucky and find an unclaimed scholarship, it should be fairly easy to obtain the funds.

Unclaimed scholarships make up a small part of the scholarships available in the United States. These nameless scholarships do pose one overarching problem for many students: they are hard to find and many of them aren’t well known in the sphere of scholarships. It is well known that many unclaimed scholarships are actually more myth than reality, and many have very high requirements that most people can’t fulfill. You may be more apt to stumble upon them when searching for random scholarships then actually finding them yourself. A good rule of thumb is: the harder you look for scholarships the more likely you will uncover an unclaimed scholarship. Here’s a little help to get you started.

PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS
There are two types of scholarships, and the main type is a public scholarship. This is a scholarship that is open to the public and available to any student that meets its requirements. Public scholarships provide partial or full funding for undergraduate or graduate studies. Many of these have very complex application processes and often require essays in addition to questions that need to be answered. Factors that can impact your eligibility for these scholarships include your grades, your GPA, your extracurricular activities, your leadership abilities, any jobs you’ve had, in addition to what you do in your free time. The College Board provides up to one hundred and twenty college scholarships each year that are fully paid. This means the scholarship covers every aspect of college from tuition to room to board, for four full years. There are other companies that sponsor scholarships. Many of these companies are in the automotive, pharmaceutical, and retail industries. Public scholarships rarely go unclaimed, but if you’re pursing a major in a “rare” field or a field that isn’t often studied, you should be able to find quite a few scholarships that have gone unclaimed.

PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS
Private scholarships provide full or partial tuition reimbursement but are available only to select students. Private scholarships have the advantage of being able to set their own requirements, meaning they could be available only to African Americans or only for people that are left handed. Some workplaces also offer scholarships to children of their employees as part of the educational workplace opportunity but are not open to the public. Other sources of private scholarships include civic associations, clubs, groups, churches and other community organizations. Many private scholarships have special criteria, such as being a minority or being in a certain geographic location. You can find many unclaimed scholarships in the private catagory because it may just take inquiring about a scholarship that will allow you to get it. It could be as simple as that.

FINDING UNCLAIMED SCHOLARSHIPS
Unclaimed scholarships can be hard to find because they are usually generalized and only available for a few select students but you may randomly run across them in your scholarship search. There are a few ways to find these unacknowledged scholarships, but the most popular option include is to speak with a guidance counselor at your high school. These counselors usually have inside information that helps you find unspecified scholarships. Remember the more agressive you are in your scholarship pursuit the more inclined you are to uncover an unclaimed college scholarship.

Below are some more options for finding unclaimed scholarships:
• Parents or guardians – Ask your parents if their employers have any unnamed scholarships available. Oftentimes, these undisclosed scholarships will go unnoticed because they aren’t given much publicity and often are hidden from the general public.
• Library – Your local library is a great place to find information on unknown scholarships. Often, the librarian will have information that will prove very valuable.
• Oftentimes, the financial aid office of the college that you’re applying to will be able to assist you in finding unidentified scholarships.

Martin Luther King Scholarship (MLK) may go Unclaimed

The Martin Luther King Scholarship (MLK) Program works differently then other scholarship programs and the King scholarships could be an unclaimed scholarship.

Unclaimed MLK Scholarship
MLK Scholarship

If you are interested in the Martin Luther King Scholarship Program (sometimes referred as the MLK scholarship), you will find that you cannot just search for this term broadly, but instead must search for a specific MLK award. Whether you are black, white, Asian, or any other race, you may be eligible to win one of the hundreds of King scholarships that are available in the name of Martin Luther King, Jr.

You see, many colleges, cities, states, and organizations have their own Martin Luther King Jr scholarship programs, and you may be eligible for numerous MLK scholarships, if you know which ones to apply for. It is vital that you know which ones you are after, and to get this information, start small and then widen your net. This is the reason why a Martin Luther King jr scholarship may go unclaimed because they are hidden scholarships so to speak. You must ask about them at the colleges you wish to attend to see if they have them.

Start by contacting the guidance counselor at your high school. Ask about local unclaimed King scholarships that may be available that exist for the purpose of honoring Dr. King, or those in his name that are awarded to students who live by his principles. From there, contact the financial aid office at the school you will attend, and ask the same question. These two professionals should be able to let you know about such Martin Luther scholarship awards that are available through the school or within the community.

Following this, contact the board of education in your state, and ask them if they know of or administer any MLK scholarships that were established in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Once you know which MLK scholarships are available to you, examine the eligibility requirements carefully, and make sure that you excel in these areas, or that you can excel in these areas. Ideally, you should start your search as a freshman or sophomore in high school to ensure this. It is very important that you make Dr. King a role model in your day-to-day life if you hope to win this potentially unclaimed scholarship.

Make sure that you are involved in your community, and particularly that you take part in activities that promote Dr. King’s principles. Participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service as well, and make sure that all of your activities are documented in someway, so that you can later prove that you did indeed participate. This day falls on January 11th each year, and there are many ways to serve. You can sponsor or organize a service project, or join another team to perform a service project.

Dr. King once said “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”  Make sure that you have an outstanding answer to that question. In fact, if you make it a point to ask that question every day of your high school career, the chances are very good that you will be well prepared to answer that question at length when you apply for Martin Luther King jr Scholarships later on. If you do not ask yourself this question, or you cannot answer it, you most likely will not ever win one of these conceivably unclaimed MLK scholarships.

Apple also has a Science Scholarship. They are giving away $1,000 to a student who is in the field of Library and Information Science. Apple has so many different corporate scholarships that it offers making it difficult to find and apply to. They may become unclaimed scholarships because students simply don’t know about them or where to apply for them. Going to their website does no good in locating an Apple college scholarship other then the Apple Scholars Program. They are almost elusive because they seem to be intertwined with other scholarship programs and sometimes they will discontinue a particular Apple scholarship program and it is no longer available. They must have at least 70 different ones that you can apply for. There are some that are available to anyone in the United States but then there are some that are only available in the states where Apple corporations are. In order to find the ones that are best for you and find the deadlines and requirements you must search for Apple scholarships to see what new Apple scholarship program is available at that time and it will be posted on the internet.

The above were all existing Apple scholarship programs as of the date of the writing of this article, but some may no longer be available. It is a bit unusual that such a large corporation handles their educational support for college students this way but then again Apple has always been one to distance themselves from the crowd and take their own unique road in doing things.

You never know they may even pay more for you – this would be an unexpected easy scholarship surprise but not unlikely to happen either. Life works this way when friendships have aged over time. But how can one get one of these unclaimed scholarships. Where can you find them, what are their requirements and why don’t many students apply for them?

Google College Scholarship Program should never go Unclaimed
Google Scholarships

If you are attending college and interested in computer engineering & science don’t let the Google scholarship become one of those unclaimed scholarships which aren’t used up every year because not enough people apply to them. All of the Google scholarship programs have fair qualifying criteria so don’t hesitate to apply and try to see if they can help finance part of your college tuition. They are one of the most unbiased & praiseworthy corporate scholarships that exist today.

There are actually several Google Scholarship programs that are available which Google supports, although many of them will require you to be entering the computer science field, computer engineering field, or a related technology field. Some, however, will only require you to take at least one computer science related course, such as the Google Anita Borg First Years Scholarship Program. Google scholarships are heavily directed in supporting women and minorities going into the computer technology related fields of study. Since this is exactly what Google is all about – computer science, then it makes sense that they would want to lend support to their industry – and what better way to do it? Here is a breakdown of the Google college scholarship programs and what they offer.

Google Academic Scholarships

The Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship offers numerous Google scholarships to students in the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The award amount for all of these scholarships is $10,000. These Google college scholarships are available for computer science related students who are in their senior year of an undergraduate program, or in a graduate program, although the Anita Borg First Years program is available to those who are finishing high school, and about to enter college.

The Google AISES Scholarship is offered in partnership with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and is also awarded in the amount of $10,000. Students who apply must be undergraduates or in graduate school, working towards a degree in computer science or a related field.

Google has two scholarships available for students with disabilities. These include the Google Europe Scholarship for Students with Disabilities and the Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. The Europe scholarship is awarded in the amount of 7000 pounds and the Google Lime Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $10,000. There is no indication as to how many of these scholarships are awarded each year, but multiple awards are made. For either of these scholarships, the student must be studying computer science, and must be disabled to apply.

The Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship is intended for computer science students, who are Hispanic. It is awarded in the amount of $10,000. Other Google minority scholarships are the Google United Negro College Fund. It is available for African-Americans who are studying computer science, also awarded in the amount of $10,000. As with other Google Scholarships, no indication is given as to how many of these are awarded, although multiple awards are made each year.

There is also the Google Zawadi Scholarship as well offered for African women who were pursuing an education in computer science at the leading universities in Africa. A Google mentor is assigned to winners to offer support in their studies. When selecting the winners of this Google scholarship financial need is required and applicants must have a strong academic background, display leadership skills and must have been involved with notable outside activities that can be documented.

The 2011 Doodle 4 Google Scholarship Contest is a great method to try to find funding for your child’s education by offering a unique scholarship way to start thinking about what they want to do with their life. Students k-12 can submit their written application on ‘what they would like to be doing someday’ for this contest.

Google Conference Travel Scholarships

Aside from all of these above Academic Scholarships, Google also offers what they call Conference Travel Scholarships where Google will award winners with covering the cost of travel to attend one of the many Google conferences or GooglePlex retreats. They include the Google Women of Color Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference; awarded to women of color students in the US and internationally, the Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference which is awarded to students outside the US, and the Google Travel Scholarship for the AISES National Conference awarded to American Indian Science and Engineering Society for AISES students only. On top of this, winners of the above mentioned Google Academic Scholarships are also invited to the GooglePlex Retreat with all expenses paid as well.

A Google Scholarship should never go Unclaimed
Google Scholarships

Google college scholarships have fair qualifying criteria and all are relatively easy to apply scholarships making this a must ‘look into’ for college bound students looking for free financial aid. As you can see all the Google scholarships are for students who want to study in the fields of computer science technology & computer engineering. The Truth about Unknown and Unused Scholarships going Unclaimed

Unused scholarships are unclaimed because many college scholarships are unknown to students so they never apply. Awarded scholarships never are used by others.

Unused Scholarships
Unused Scholarships

There are essentially two types of unused scholarships. The first type is the unused scholarship money that people don’t apply for; either because of extremely rigid requirements, or because they aren’t aware that they are available, and more commonly because they don’t think that they stand a chance of winning the scholarship.

The second group is the unused college scholarships that are actually applied for and awarded, but then not used by the student. In terms of the second type, however, those unclaimed scholarship dollars are typically rolled over back into the originial scholarship fund, or awarded to other students as they become available. It is the first type that you need to know about.

The first reason that students do not apply for these unusued scholarships is because they don’t think that they could possibly win, with the competition involved, even if they meet all of the criteria. This is always a mistake. If you meet the eligibility requirements for a college scholarship, you need to apply. Never think of this as a waste of time. Remember that for most scholarships, a certain number of each scholarship is awarded every year. When there are strict eligibility requirements, or a complicated application process, fewer students will apply. What this essentially means is that often, there are fewer applicants than there are awards available, and this works in your favor. If you meet the requirements, and you go through the application process, in this instance, you pretty much have a guaranteed scholarship.

Surprisingly, students are largely unaware of many unknown scholarships that are available in their own community. Some high schools have taken the initiative to release lists of these local little known scholarships to their students, so that they are aware of them, but few have done this to date. When the student talks about financial aid with their high school guidance counselor, they need to ask specifically about local scholarships that are available along with state scholarships too. Encourage your school to put together a list of the local college scholarships that are available, so that more students can get financial aid, and there will be far fewer unused and unknown scholarships that go unclaimed for college.

Parents should check with their employers, unions, and any organizations that they belong to in order to find out about any little known scholarships that are available. Scholarship opportunities such as these are not always advertised. You should also check with your church to see if they sponsor any christian scholarships, and check with any type of organization that students belong to for any potential hidden scholarships. Sometimes, just being a member of an organization makes your eligible, but because so many people do not know this, there are a large number of unused scholarships each and every year.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that standard scholarships only go to the most advanced students, or to the financially poorest students. This isn’t so. While some scholarships grants are designed for the very brightest, or the very poor, this isn’t true of most scholarships. Also, don’t assume that you are automatically eligible for a scholarship and that you don’t have to apply. With just a little investigation into what is available, you can greatly increase the awards that you get to pay for your education with the many unused scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Find as many of these unknown, hidden and secret college scholarships available today and see what sticks. This will make your college financial ride a little more enjoyable.

Do Unclaimed Scholarships really Exist?

Oprah Winfrey Scholarship will never be Unclaimed

Oprah Winfrey Scholarship will never be an unclaimed scholarship because of her celebrity status knowned for her humanitarianism.

The Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Program works differently then other scholarship programs, and the Oprah scholarships will not be unclaimed scholarships by any stretch of the imagination because of her celebrity status which is known for her philanthropy and humanitarianism. Oprah Winfrey has set up (3) different charities which she designates scholarship monies for other scholarship programs of her choice at various colleges and schools.

The (3) Oprah Winfrey Charities which Oprah Winfrey runs and operates through, to provide her scholarships are:

OPRAH WINFREY FOUNDATION
This Foundation is the private foundation which is under the direction of Oprah Winfrey. This foundation is Oprah’s pride and joy. According to the most recent filing, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation has total assets of $172 million. Recently, Oprah Winfrey placed $36 million of her own money in the Foundation, which in turn distributed $8 million to numerous educational, arts and medical venues to be used for her Oprah Winfrey Scholarships. This organization normally will not accept donations from the public. If the public wants to support Oprah Winfrey-related philanthropic work through donations, you would be directed to do so through the Oprah’s Angel Network (OAN) below.

OPRAH WINFREY OPERATING FOUNDATION
This Foundation is a private operating foundation whose current focus is operating the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls – South Africa Program. The main focus is providing monies through endowments to South African schools only. Oprah describes the reason behind establishing this Foundation this way “I believe that one of a nation’s most important resources is its young people, and the key that allows young people to create a better world and a brighter future is education. Now, more than ever, it is vitally important for Africa,” said Winfrey. “Investing in the higher education of individual African women is an investment in positive change.”

OPRAH’S ANGEL NETWORK (OAN)
Oprah’s Angel Network grants awards to organizations and operates projects in under-served communities that provide educational initiatives as well as assist people in fulfilling basic human needs and regaining dignity. Because Oprah Winfrey makes a donation to Oprah’s Angel Network equal to its management and general as well as fundraising expenses, 100% of your donation goes toward program costs. This is the program the public is encouraged to provide donations for. The Angel Network is heavily promoted on Winfrey’s show for fans to help raise money for worthy causes.

Oprah Winfrey Scholarships Operate this Way
If a college already has a scholarship program for people who exhibit a strong financial need, Oprah may donate monies to that particular scholarship program. It must be specifically used for that scholarship program Oprah Winfrey donated the monies for, and it can’t be used for another scholarship program at that school unless it’s authorized by Oprah herself. The Oprah Winfrey Foundations put strong emphasis for empowering ethnic minorities who lack the funds to go through college, and especially women in particular. Oprah’s Endowments seem to sponsor scholarships that directly make an effort to tackle these two groups. Ms. Winfrey’s private foundation was originally established in 1987 to support the education and empowerment of women, children and families in the United States and around the world. Ms. Winfrey’s charities have awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that carry out her world vision.

Example of an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Program
The Oprah Winfrey Foundation awarded $2.5 million endowment to New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service for the creation of The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program for African Women. The program will allow African women to pursue graduate studies in public policy and management at the Wagner School. It is the first known of its kind at an American University.

How to Apply for a Oprah Winfrey Scholarship
If you want to apply for an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship directly, you cannot do so. You must contact the various colleges and universities in which the Oprah Winfrey Foundation has donated scholarship contribution monies to, and apply to that particular school. You can then fill out an Oprah Winfrey Scholarship application there. The Oprah scholarship will be augmented along with another similar scholarship program at that school (college or university or trade school). The scholarship will have more giving power and be better able to accommodate more students in terms of scholarship numbers and the amount of the stipend awarded to each student. Ask the college/university financial aids office which you are contemplating going to, if they have been awarded any monies from the Oprah Winfrey Scholarship Foundation, or simply search online for any school which received monies from the Oprah Foundation. If they have, immediately apply. It will surely not be an unclaimed scholarship, simply because of its notoriety.

Don’t let this discourage you from applying for it though!
