Unclaimed Scholarships for College
Unclaimed Scholarships for College

Unclaimed scholarships for college are found at many college’s today, but you may have to apply to the colleges first to see them; and apply later then normal too.

Thats when the magic happens – after you apply and get to see your financial award letter.

These are the easy scholarships for college!

You sit back after you submit your online application and FAFSA to colleges you’re intersted in and wait for the colleges to work up your award letter.

Certain unclaimed scholarships for college are those financial awards you really don’t know about until after you have submited your application. They are given away to those who fall into a certain qualifying standard which colleges establish for themselves and can even change during the year so as to include more students for various reasons – which are usually based on low enrollment.

Remember; colleges need student enrollment to survive, and keep yearly federal student financial aid coming in from the government. So when enrollment is down they go into survival mode; which means they lower the qualifying gates to entice more students to attend.

They do this by lowering qualifying GPA’s for scholarships, grants and ACT scores. They may even create programs such as Opportunity Grants (which may mean someone with a 20 or below ACT and/or 2.00 GPA’s.

In other words they are allowing students in who previously didn’t qualify; and awarding them great financial aid packages!

This is all good as far as we are concerned on this website because our motto is that all higher education should be fully subsidized for any student who wants to attend college in order to better themselves in life.

When people do graduate form college, they enrich everyone around them, including themselves, and this tranlates into a better world for all of us.

Now; how do I know this?

I’m speaking from recent experience here. Let me give you a personal example of how it worked for me.

It just so happens that my twin children applied to a few colleges; and one with a 3.95 GPA, and a 28 ACT score got a financial aid award equal to my other child who had a 2.94 GPA and 20 ACT.

Now I might add that the 20 ACT score child applied to many colleges to find that; but he was persistant. We both tried to find colleges with falling enrollment over the last two years.

He also applied to colleges longer (into July) – which is the time that many falling enrollment universities start to lower their qualifying standards. This is the time they start to panic and will put every student just about in one way or another with all kinds of newly formed grants, scholarships and financial aid awards.

The alternative for them is possible extinction simply because operating cost can sink any ship – even colleges if there’s no captain on board overseeing their financials.

Remember colleges are a business, and students are the product that produce their revenue to sustain them. In fact these procedures are most likely already in place; which is why the 20 ACT got the same as the 28 ACT in the story above.

It might have taken longer to get, but this is how unclaimed scholarships can be gotten.

If students aren’t picky about where to attend college, then the above can happen to just about anyone.

Apply to universities and colleges with falling enrollments, and later might be better then sooner.

Unclaimed scholarships = easy scholarships.

This is how I accidentally ran across, and got unclaimed college scholarships with my two darlings – and you can too!

What a pleasant surprise!

Eastern Michigan Unclaimed Scholarships may be the Easiest
Eastern Michigan Unclaimed Scholarships may be the Easiest

When it comes to unclaimed college scholarships, Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti MI, may be tops on the list for students looking for easy scholarships at this time.

Why?

This university is looking to increase declining enrollment; which is a common problem nowadays with most colleges as competition heats up for students looking for the best financial aid for themselves, and who want to have as little student loan debt as possible upon graduating.

This is a recipe for easy scholarships for college; in the form of unclaimed college scholarships!

If a student applies here, they may be pleasantly surprised at what their financial aid letter is giving them. The only way to find out what yours will be is to apply and find out for yourself.

Every year Eastern Michigan gives out scholarships in millions of dollars to students who are either needy financially or those who have performed well above expectations. It is always a good thing to encourage exemplary performance by rewarding the students who have outdone themselves accordingly.

Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is located in Ypsilanti Michigan, just 35 miles from Detroit. The university holds more than 23,000 students annually and offers a variety of courses, from degree programs to honors programs.

The university is a very good choice for any student who would love to study in an environment that enables free thinking, and cultures the student to become a responsible member of the society when they graduate.

There are different types of scholarships that the school awards students every year, and all of them depend on different selection criteria. Scholarships are not only available for continuing students, but freshmen also are able to enjoy scholarships when they are enrolled into the school at the beginning of their studies.

Due to the fact that freshmen come from different schools that have different grading systems, the selection criteria for awarding scholarships have since been updated to cater for GPA, ACT and SAT result scores.

Therefore all the students who are coming to the school have a fair playing field when it comes to the selection criteria, and no one is locked out if they meet all the criteria required.

The exclusive awards are normally given to one student only. Such awards are highly competitive, and include the Presidential Scholarship award, which caters for full tuition, full room and boarding facilities. For you to be considered for this scholarship, you must have been registered for and competed in the Presidential Scholarship Competition (PSC).

Another exclusive scholarship award is Regents Gold Scholarship, which is also very competitive. In terms of the allocation, this scholarship award only caters for tuition, and to be eligible you must have been registered for and competed in the Presidential Scholarship Competition (PSC).

The Emerald Scholarship is not competitive, and students are automatically considered for this award once they have been registered or enrolled in the institution.

The award is normally variable, and lies between $1500 and $4500. Students who are applying for this scholarship must make sure that they are very good in as far as merit based selection is concerned because the selection procedure depends on your scores in the GPA, SAT and ACT tests.

The EMU Education First Opportunity Scholarship (EFOS) is also another exclusive scholarship that is awarded to students. There is no competition involved, and students are eligible for award once they are enrolled at the university.

The amount offered caters for full tuition after federal aid, state aid and any other EMU aid has been factored in. In order to be selected you must satisfactorily complete and submit the FAFSA, you have to be eligible for Pell Grant, be a resident of Michigan or Ohio and obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0or ACT of 20 points.

These are not the only awards available at the institution. Others include the National Scholars Program, which is also automatic, and provides up to $15,600.

It is important to note that this award normally pays only the difference between the out-of-state and the in-state tuition for the students that are qualified to apply.

However, in the event that you are from Michigan or Ohio, your fees are normally levied as in-state tuition so you are not eligible to receive this award. You must however attain a 2.75 GPA, SAT of 950 points and ACT of 20 points to be considered for successful award of the scholarship.

Come Home to Eastern (Come Home to Michigan Award) is also another award (clearly an unclaimed scholarship) that is normally given to students on automatic basis as long as they have been registered and enrolled at the institution. You will however need additional verification besides the predetermined qualification requirements in order to make sure that you are eligible for the $15,600 award.

As you can see, Eastern Michigan Scholarships and Grants are being offered in a generous fashion at this time from this public university.

The scholarships are also awarded to students based on a GPA points scale, and you must at least attain a 3.00 GPA and 19 ACT to be considered for most of their awards.

Beside that, there are criteria that are set by the school which students must meet in the event that they want to be awarded renewable scholarships. Such are scholarships that are renewed every other academic year.

For more information or clarification students are normally encouraged to get in touch with the financial aid office so that they can get up to date information on how to proceed.

This scholarship is renewable and it is also inclusive of all the other LSSU awards. It is normally awarded through the Laker Gold Competition, and the award is up to three scholarships every other year. In order to be awarded this scholarship, you have to meet the criterion that is set by the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees Distinguished Scholarship has an annual value of $8000, and it is renewable every other year. This scholarship is awarded on merit, apart from which you must attain a 3.80 GPA and 28 ACT in order to be considered. You must also be a resident of Michigan.

This is not all there is to the financial aid that is offered to the students. The school offers grants based on the financial needs and this is normally from the information that they get from FAFSA. Two of the largest grant programs that are issued through the school to students are the Federal Pell Grant and the Ohio College Opportunity Grant.

Federal Pell Grant is available to all undergraduates who are eligible and is offered based on the level of financial need of the applicant. Awards can be anywhere from $602 to $5730, and they are normally awarded based on the credit hours enrolled.

Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College

Unclaimed scholarships can come in many forms when it comes to student aid for college and Hope College in Holland Michigan has unclaimed college scholarships.

Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College
Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College

Unclaimed scholarships can come in many forms when it comes to student aid for college and Hope College in Holland Michigan has unclaimed college scholarships that in my opinion may be one of the best to come across.

Why?

Much of it is based on family income.

This makes it simple to qualify if you have a chance for student aid or not.

Hope College, Michigan has been at the forefront when it comes to helping students go through their studies without having to deal with challenges in terms of financial aid.

The scholarship system at Hope College is a bit different from the same in other institutions especially since they work with families in order to make sure that the studies are as affordable as can be.

The financial support system has been structured in such a way that students get to enjoy a wholesome package that includes a combination of employment at the campus, loans and grants.

College tuition is expensive because Hope is a private Christian college, and most students usually find it very hard to go through with their studies because of the financial constraints from home. However, through the financial aid system Hope College is able to assist the students on their way to getting good quality education to enable them become better people in society.

This is an all-inclusive financial aid system that is structured around family contributions. The eligibility level for financial aid depends on how much your parents earn (annual income). Your eligibility for the funding will therefore depend on how much your family contributes or expects to contribute, and the college cost.

The lower your parents combined household income is, the more scholarships grants you receive mostly from Hope college themselves. It’s expensive to attend Hope, but the greater the financial need the more student aid is awarded to students – and its generous!

Hope Scholarships Grants

There are three different kinds of financial aid packages that are awarded to students in this kind of structure. There are scholarships and grants, loans, and finally the students are also able to get support in terms of employment on the campus. The work-study structure makes it easier for lots of students to study as they get to earn, in the process making up for the loans.

There are two types of loans that are availed to students in this institution. There are loans that are based on need, and the ones that are not based on need. The loans that are not based on need are usually available to students and their parents irrespective of your financial need. There are different repayment options available and the interest rates are also varied.

The loans based on need on the other hand have become a valuable asset to students and families. These allow you to carry forward some of the payments of your education. When this happens, you will be able to start making the repayments only after you have graduated, or in the event that you have withdrawn from college.

Federal Work Study big at Hope College!

One of the other alternatives that you can look into when you need financial support from the institution is the student employment opportunity. The federal work study awards are usually awarded to students to become part of their financial aid. The students who seek this opportunity usually get preference when it comes to job placement on the campus. Either way you will need to make sure that you pay more attention to your studies.

The work-study alternative usually has some really great results for the students, with studies indicating that students who are on part-time jobs usually have a higher tendency to perform better than those who do not do the same. The reason for this is because such students get to plan for their time accordingly. Apart from that, they also get to interact with a lot of the school personnel out of the class situation and probably have a better chance of consulting on educational matters, and most importantly how to become better with their grades.

The work-study opportunity also makes it easier for the students to cover part of their loans without having to worry so much. By the time you are through with school, you will probably have less to pay as compared with other students who will be starting to pay their loans from scratch. The work-study situation is not just about working to pay off the loans, but it also gives the students an awesome chance with respect to the job market, and the work experience. These are some of the means through which Hope College is helping students with their finances.

Make no mistake about this, we love work study programs because the jobs given to students via work study programs at colleges are fun and easy and many times you can do your homework while working them too!

College’s offering student aid based on parents annual income along with work study thrown in, is a great recipe for very good unclaimed scholarships.

Look into Hope scholarships and student aid and see for yourself!

Spring Arbor Unclaimed Scholarships and Financial Aid for Incoming Students

After high school becoming a Spring Arbor Cougar may be something to look into because of their unclaimed college scholarships.

Scholarships Unclaimed from Spring Arbor

After high school becoming a Spring Arbor Cougar may be something to look into because of their unclaimed college scholarships.

If you do not believe that you can go to Spring Arbor University located in Michigan because you may not financially be able to afford the education, then investigate the Spring Arbor University financial aid opportunities open to incoming students.

Spring Arbor is different from a lot of universities because they are a Christian university that relies on the fact that they are the meeting center for faith in God and the education you need to survive in the world of man.

This university was established more than one hundred forty years ago and has educational locations located in Michigan and in Ohio.

There are several unique scholarship and financial aid programs open to new students at Spring Arbor University. One of the easier scholarships available is the National Merit scholarship that can cover as much as sixty percent of the standard tuition costs.

Yes – 60%!

To be eligible for this scholarship you will need to enroll at Spring Arbor University as a full-time student. You also have to enroll at the university the same year that you graduate from high school. That means you will graduate in early summer from high school and enroll to begin taking classes at the university in the fall of the same year. You must maintain a 3.5 grade point average. You can apply for this scholarship by submitting confirmation to the national Merit Semifinalist status.

The Trustee Scholarship will provide twelve thousand dollars a year to eligible applicants for a period of not more than four consecutive years. You do not have to make a separate application to be considered for this easy to apply scholarship. Your enrollment paperwork will be used as a determining application. You will be required to maintain a 3.5 grade point average to maintain the scholarship qualification status.

The Presidential scholarship to Spring Arbor does not require the student entering the college to fill out any additional applications to be considered for the award. The scholarship can provide as much as ten thousand dollars per year for a period of four consecutive years. You will be required to maintain a 3.5 grade point average to keep the scholarship and be able to renew it each year.

The scholarships will look at the points you have accumulated according to the eligibility table for freshmen entering the university. To determine how many points you have you have to consider your grade point average that you had in high school. A 3.50 to a 4.0 grade point average will earn four points on the eligibility table. 3.30 to 3.49 grade point averages are given three points. 3.20 to 3.29 grade point averages are given two points. 3.0 to 3.19 grade point averages are scored with one point.

Then you consider the points you earned on the eligibility chart for where you were ranked in your high school graduating class. If you were in the top ten percent of your class you will be awarded four points. A student that was in the eleven to twenty percent of their class will be given three points. If you were ranked in the twenty first to the thirtieth percent of your class you will get two points.

Finally the ACT score you received will determine the rest of the points you have. If you score between twenty nine and thirty six on the ACT you will receive five points on the eligibility table. Spring Arbor Unclaimed Scholarships are disguised!

Here’ the best part about Spring Arbor Scholarships. If you have to take out student loans during your time at Spring Arbor and when students graduate with them, they will be forgiven if the student cannot find work. Sounds to good to be true but it is. I would suggest that all students interested in attending SA contact the admissions office to discuss this program further in detail.

Spring Arbor is a Christian school so this may be the reason behind this unbelievable student loan forgiveness program.

What an unclaimed college scholarship!!!

Unclaimed college scholarships can be easy and come in all shapes and sizes and are beautifully disguised like this one!!

Bowdoin Unclaimed College Scholarships Meet Full Student Need

Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine offers some of the best unclaimed college scholarships among-st all colleges today along with creative student aid.

Bowdoin Unclaimed College Scholarships
Bowdoin Unclaimed College Scholarships

Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine offers some of the best unclaimed college scholarships among-st all schools today, and hopefully their student aid philosophy will spill over to other college’s throughout the country.

Simply put, Bowdoin College will not look at the family’s ability to pay as to whether they admit a student into their university or not. This is called ‘need blind admission’. Bowdoin College will only look at the highly motivated student who is serious about their studies – period!

AND, if they do admit a student in, the Bowdoin policy is to meet the full need of the student who is applying for financial aid. About half the students at Bowdoin receive some type of an unclaimed college scholarship (grants, scholarships, etc).

This my fellow students is exactly what you want to hear when you look to apply to college.

Many students get hooked on the ‘I want to attend XYZ college because all my friends are going their, or the guys or girls are good looking and their are tons of them, or the college is so pretty, or the parties are great their etc…you get the drift.

You should look for a school who is going to pay your way firstly. This is the financially smart way to do it because what if your plans entail going to graduate school and you have 80k in student loans upon your graduation?

The chances are good you will because, that is the trend to even get a job nowadays.

What do you do now? You are cornered and you have little, if any options left.

You must think about all this now because it will happen to most all students.

Good Fin Aid Planning with Unclaimed College Scholarships

The answer is in good student financial aid planning right NOW before you select a college to attend in the first place. Look for colleges like Bowdoin which offer need blind types of unclaimed scholarships and grants. Then, out of these, select what college you prefer AFTER this only, in which to attend.

I can assure you that there will be pretty guys and girls, good parties, new good friends and everything else you thought about in the first place at these colleges. The academics will be second to none too, because college’s like Bowdoin which are offering unclaimed student aid are the top academic schools in the country – so the trend seems to be.

If you do not agree with me now, then lets talk in four years after you’re 80k in debt from attending the college your friends went to in which you followed but could not really afford to so you borrowed via student loans.

Why don’t all college’s offer unclaimed college scholarships like Bowdoin with their meeting full student need philosophy?

Bowdoin Unclaimed College Scholarships and Grants Defined

Bowdoin College unclaimed aid essentially builds a bridge between what the full cost to attend college at Bowdoin is, to the family’s ability to pay. Once a family fills out the FAFSA, then Bowdoin can determine what grants, unclaimed scholarships, work study and other, need to be awarded the student.

To set the record straight Bowdoin College is expensive to attend. But this is exactly the kinds of colleges which are following the philosophy of ‘meeting the full need of the student upon admission to their college’ – The more expensive ones!

Look for these keywords when deciding on what college’s will pay most all your cost to attend their university.

*It really does not matter if it cost 100k or 20k per year to attend if that college will give you 100k or 20k in their unclaimed college scholarships, grants and student aid per year – now does it?

The Lower the EFC – the more Unclaimed Student Aid Given

All of the above information will be most beneficial for students whose EFC comes in lower. Most any college will give less to students whose parents make really good money and have large assets in the bank – simply because these programs are designed to help those who need it it the most. It’s a sliding need scale – the more you need help the more will be given to you and vice-versa.

Low Enrollment Equates to more Unclaimed Student Financial Aid and Scholarships for Students

That being said, you would be surprised to find out student aid will come your way if colleges really need to increase their school enrollments that year, even to those who don’t require as much. You will never know how much you will get until you apply and send over your FAFSA to those schools you’re interested in most.

If enrollment numbers are way down, then the unclaimed college scholarships will be flying off the shelf even at Bowdoin and any other college across the country. Total enrollments play a big part in how colleges receive funds to give back to students; so yearly enrollments are always guarded by every college and university everywhere.

Say YES to Bowdoin College and others like them who offer unclaimed college scholarships.

In four years you will be glade you did!

Unclaimed College Scholarships for Low Income Students

Many times at some colleges and university unclaimed scholarships come disguised in many college financial aids office under low income student aid.

unclaimed college scholarships
Scholarships for Low Income Students

Many times at some colleges and universities, unclaimed scholarships come disguised in many college financial aids office’s under low income student aid.

All students should check these programs at any college because sometimes they are hidden away in the financial aids section of their websites and these are the gems of unclaimed college scholarships given to incoming freshmen.

Many colleges are starting to expand their guidelines to include more students simply because it’s getting more and more competitive to land students to their campuses. For example they may offer special grants for students that fit into a moderately lower parent income bracket coupled with a decent academic record.

Can you say Unclaimed College Scholarships?

Notice I said decent academic record.

Yes, that’s right!

It doesn’t have to be golden any more, like high ACT scores and GPA. Many colleges are getting around this by allowing students to have a “decent GPA and Act’s” along with past community service – which most students are required to get in high school to graduate nowadays.

Competition among-st colleges is fierce for incoming students and the end result is lots of unclaimed scholarships disguised as university school grants and low income student financial student aid.

Well; the easiest way to do this that I personally have done many times is to call the financial aids office and ask if they have lower income programs and what their URL is to read more about them. At that time ask about them on the phone. Have a pad and pencil ready because you will get answers to that question immediately. How do you go about finding out about these unknown scholarships especially when college websites have these invisible programs buried three layers deep decorated in financial aid lingo?

“Sometimes unclaimed scholarships are the easiest scholarships to find – just make the call to the Fin Aids office!”

Top Unclaimed Scholarship from MSU – Spartan Advantage Program

Here’s an example of a lower income program from Michigan State University. It’s called the Spartan Advantage Program. It’s for students in Michigan only and reserved for those who are what MSU considers the neediest students.

To see if you qualify you must fill out the FAFSA and send it to MSU. Students must also be eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and enrolled full time in a program in which you will receive an undergraduate degree at MSU. This program is for those with income that is below the federally established poverty guidelines.

A work study will be assigned to students which helps pay for this program, but it will be the best job you probably will ever work from past students who have participated in the Spartan Advantage Program – “Work study jobs are fun at MSU”.

You may be thinking that you won’t fit into this program, but MSU has a second tier program to this one where you may fit that the guidelines are easier to qualify for. This second tier program will grant you $7,100 from MSU along with the Pell grant of $5,600 which will give you $12,700 in free money to use to attend MSU.

WOW!!! – Do you love this as much as I do?

What an unclaimed college scholarship to a major university!

You don’t have to pay any of it back either. You may have to get a small student loan if at all to help pay incidentals; but work study may pay for the rest.

This is one of MANY programs designed for lower income students and those who fall outside of the normal lower income student aid programs which many colleges across the country have in order to persuade students to come to their campuses and learn.

Inquire at the Fin Aids office of any college or university to discover them and don’t be shy when you ask about them either, because easy scholarships for low income students are gotten for those who ask about them!

Tips for getting Unclaimed College Scholarships

When the scholarship season for the colleges ends this summer, there will be unused scholarships, or unclaimed scholarships with millions of dollars left over.

unclaimed college scholarships
Unclaimed Scholarship Tips

When the scholarship season for the colleges comes to a close in this summer, there will be unused scholarships, or unclaimed scholarships with millions of dollars left over.

According to the statistics only one student out of ten full time students studying at a four year college had some sort of scholarship, and the average amount for that is just $2,815.

ABCnews.go.com, how to pay for the college tuition fees is clearly on people’s minds.

The staff over at Scholarship America actually saw an increase in the number of calls that they receive from families and they also noticed that the callers had more urgency in their tones.

Even the Kentucky campus of Berea college, a college which gives all the accepted students full-tuition scholarships, saw a rise in 15% of applicants this year round and the number of families trying to get the free application of federal student aid almost jumped by 21%in the first three months of this year.

What are the reasons for this?

Students either don’t apply at the correct time or they are not applying for scholarships at all.

Some tips are:

  • · Start early: many of the scholarships are only available to junior year high schoolers. Also there are many scholarship sponsors who offer mentoring to these students and start tracking them in junior high.
  • · Avoid errors: errors should be avoided on your application at all costs. All the directions should be followed very closely and the essay should be proofed several times.
  • · Remember accomplishments: a high school student should keep in mind all the sports or community or science achievements that he or she has so that when the senior year comes they have a ready list to refer to.
  • · Shop around for Recommendation Letters: never assume that a favorite teacher will hand out a recommendation letter. Even if the teacher thinks that you’re the best student, the writing skills of the teacher may not be very good. So you should look for all the potential teachers who can write you a good recommendation letter.

Some examples of awards that get under-applied to are the AXA achievement scholarship awards $25,000 to students who help their community on a large scale. Another is the National Wild Turkey Federation which usually offers up to $10,000 to students who hold a valid license to hunt and are active in their communities.

According to www.investopedia.com, there is a myth that there are usually millions of dollars of unclaimed scholarships. This is a myth created by fraudulent organizations that usually charge students for scholarship searches. Most of these unrewarded scholarship monies usually comes from scholarship programs which are very restrictive and only a very small pool of applicants are actually eligible for it.

For example a scholarship for color blind left handed females from Wisconsin would probably result in funds which are left over. And families should be very careful because when they get desperate for these scholarships they might fall prey to educational internet scams, charging fees for information you can get entirely free off the internet yourself by just searching for it.

Marvin Carmichael, a past chairman of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has his viewpoint that gives a statistic that usually 85% of the scholarships which are termed to be unclaimed scholarships are basically employer backed education benefits. Many don’t apply to them and there are millions of dollars left unclaimed, or unused.

Also, the experts advise people not to pay private firms to look for these so called unclaimed scholarship dollars as you could do the same for yourself, by searching on the internet. Many of these offers are usually scams, and even the most legitimate of the searches don’t usually offer what a student himself could look up for free on the internet or from the school guidance counselor.

Unclaimed Scholarships for College Myths

Myths and legends exist everywhere, even in the world of college unclaimed scholarships.

unclaimed scholarships for college
Unclaimed Scholarship Myths

Myths and legends exist everywhere, even in the world of unclaimed scholarships for college. There are so many different reasons why these different college scholarship myths take shape, but the unfortunate thing is that they discourage students from applying for scholarships that they could easily achieve.

It is a very bad misconception that the scholarships are only awarded to the the best candidates, or the valedictorians only.

Academic institutions usually have a different range of scholarships programs with many different kinds of eligibility requirements.

Many people who usually deal with financial aid and undergrad scholarships go out of their own way to address these myths about unclaimed scholarships for college. One such person is Marvin Carmichael, a former chairman of the NASFAA (National association of Student Financial aid Administrators). He is very familiar with the misunderstandings that people have over unclaimed scholarships, or scholarships in general.

Marvin Carmichael is now the Director of financial aid at Clemson University, and this is where he goes on to dismiss the common myths about the unclaimed scholarships. Keep in mind this is his opinion only on these types of scholarships. Others in his same position has other opinions which may contradict the below. Nevertheless; it’s a good idea to get various opinions on this subject as possible because it’s so controversial.

Myth 1: Unclaimed scholarships amount to billions of dollars
This myth has actually been around since the word scholarship was actually invented. Carmichael says that there are times that the universities have scholarships that don’t get awarded but it’s very seldom. Usually the main reasons for those scholarships not to be awarded are very high eligibility requirements or because of unfortunate timing.

There might actually be a lot of funds that might amount into billions of US dollars, but that’s not due to the lack of unclaimed scholarships. This myth also usually fails to take in account the employer paid scholarships that are usually included in the total of scholarships, and of all the unclaimed scholarships which those amount to eighty five percent.

Myth 2: Due to so much competition I will not get a college scholarship
There are lot of grants and potential awards available out there and all you have to do is seek them out first. But the important point to remember here is that you have to determine what your best abilities are. Scholarships are not just for the valedictorians but also for people who have unique talents and interests. The opportunities out there are quite diverse.

As you begin your search you should first start with your own community and local associations in your area. The people who employ your parents might even sponsor your college scholarships and most of them don’t require anything more than a speech or an essay.

Myth 3: only the best students get undergraduate scholarships.
It not always that the top students get the scholarships says Carmichael. He points out that the universities are not able to use the fee and tuition revenue they get for the scholarships, rather these scholarships funds come from individuals. Government sponsored programs or state sponsored institutions usually make large donations to be used as scholarships.

Some of those scholarships are awarded to the students with a particular kind of major. This can be explained in an example that say someone from the textile industry wants to set up a fund for a scholarship program, the students that might apply for that scholarship might not be high achievers but they might meet the criteria put in place by the donor.

Myth 4: university scholarships won’t come to me because I am not a top student.
Very few students get free rides and in reality they use a lot of different financial mechanisms to cover their tuition and cover their costs. Students are also encouraged to explore other options available to them such as grants, loans, federal and state programs and tuition tax credits. You’ll be awarded more if you have more going for you and you should not sit back and wait for the money to come in to your help.

According to www.naas.org, they are still sponsoring scholarships worth over one million dollars, which also includes grants and loans. And around $100,000 of this financial aid, grants, loans and scholarships which were targeted for high-school seniors went unused because a lot of high school counselors did not distribute the appropriate literature. At a time when a lot of families are struggling this is not only unethical but outrageous.

Could these awards from naas.org actually be authentic college unclaimed scholarships!

Maybe!

Though some of the unclaimed scholarships DO exist and are granted to students, others stay unclaimed as the scholarship programs are way too strict in their terms and conditions for application in which most of the students who do apply are unable to meet these requirements set by the scholarship program leaving the scholarships unclaimed.

Unclaimed scholarships have money invested by private enterprises, foundations and private individuals. They have a fixed standard of selecting students for these scholarships to help pay their college fee. If that standard is met and the students qualify they attain the scholarships, but if they do not meet the criteria, then the scholarship is unclaimed.

There are many ways of finding out about these college scholarship programs. Students should be careful not to search for services that assure them to find un awarded scholarships against a fee as this information is accessible on the internet free of cost, all they need to do is to invest some time and effort in surfing the internet and looking for these scholarship programs and apply for them so that they can be possibly used, or else the funds in them remain unclaimed.

The first step is to start close – that is go ask the admissions office of the university where you intend to apply for a scholarship. Usually, big academic institutions do offer scholarships to students who achieve excellent grades in their class based on their merit. If this is not possible then pupils should ask their parents’ employers if they offer scholarships because private organizations may not have had many applicants in a year due to which their scholarships remain unclaimed, but by helping an employee’s child the scholarship funds can be used.

But the best way to get a remote scholarship where not many students apply to is look for them online and apply for as many as you can. They are listed more on the second or third page of search results for scholarships. By doing this, you have the option to the select the one that suits your needs better.

There is a common misconception of students when they apply for such unclaimed scholarships which is they are only granted to the ones who have a 4.0 GPA or get straight A’s in class. This is not always true.

The information in Mytowncolorado.com states that even if you’re an average student who is struggling through high school looking for ways to finance it, they needn’t worry as there are scholarships available for students who are exceptional and rare and have special hobbies. They may not have excellent grades but they have other things that make them deserving for such unconventional scholarships.

The website Message.snopes.com is an open forum site where people have discussed all their thoughts and opinions about unclaimed scholarships. Many say that these unclaimed scholarships are just myths and tales that do not really exist because however many times students apply for them; they get rejected as they just not seem to meet their standards.

There are also people who have commented that the main reason for these scholarships for being unclaimed is the eligibility factor as there are quite a few restrictions on eligibility hence if these restrictions were to be relaxed more applicants would become eligible each year for unclaimed college scholarships.

A few other people also commented that these scholarships are not available for traditional full time students but only for working students. This is the opinion of the people commenting on this website.

Bottom line on all this is that you must take the time to apply to as many as you can.

Your odds then increase on winning one!

College of the Ozarks

There are 100 % unclaimed college scholarships offered from the College of the Ozarks located in Point Lookout, Missouri. They are very unusual in how they handle their ‘free tuition program.

Many students have never heard of Ozark college, but it’s worth taking a look at if you are unsure how you will be paying for your college, and if you do not want to use any student loans at all to finance your higher education.

We don’t blame you either since our philosophy is (and always will be) that all who want to attend college should be able to, and at no cost!

This private four year college is situated on a 1000 acre campus too, so it’s no small educational facility. There is a 13 to 1 student / faculty ratio which is outstanding to say the least.

It’s an evangelical Christian school which has a total of approximately 1400 students with a liberal arts curriculum. The campus does have a Christian environment were NO drugs or alcohol are allowed on or off campus for those who attend, keeping with their reputable ‘stone cold sober’ college mantra living. They want real deal Christian students. So for those students looking to attend college to party down, it’s well advised to look in another college direction. It won’t be happening here. I’m sure this is a good thing though.

All students who attend the College of the Ozarks DO NOT pay tuition, IF they can demonstrate financial need, so they do not offer unclaimed scholarships to all who apply, just the ones who really need it.

Ozark college is unique because they are on a mission (which is the same as ours) to eliminate student loans, or student loan dept in every way possible. In fact you are not allowed to have any student loans and attend the College of the Ozarks – well sort of. They stopped accepting those students who wanted student loans. This is unheard of today and is hard to believe, but it’s true.

The College received a 355 million dollar endowment and will even help students with dental and medical and or/other unexpected needed expenses when necessary.

Sound too good to be true? It’s not!

You are most likely thinking there must be some type of catch if you go to this school and not pay for it. Well there is, but it’s not all that bad because the Ozarks make it all part of your program, and all students have to do it too.

You see, Ozark college is also known as Hard Work U.

Have we scared you away yet?

OK – Then keep on reading. It’s really all good! We promise.

Their unclaimed scholarships work like this:
At College of the Ozarks students work in campus jobs connected with the university in some way. They can work in the housing, maintenance,OR the cafeteria sections of campus. Some students can work landscaping/agricultural and other related areas. The Ozarks college also have a working hog and cattle farms, gardens, lodging along with a restaurant. This is a lot to choose from, so most students should be happy with their work choice. We would be.

You might be thinking that since you have to work and attend college at the same time that it would be too much to handle.

Not so!

The Ozarks weave your classes together with your college courses as seamlessly as possible. They understand this delima, and do it in such a way to insure your college success.

The way it works out is that students work part-time during the school year. Many then work 40-hour per weekly jobs during summer to cover the cost of room & board. Others work in nearby towns located near campus, which is a major tourism attraction specializing in music along with really good theatrical shows.

Sounds enticing doesn’t it?

It is that’s why!

This new way of offering unclaimed scholarships to new students may some day be the norm for future students because college may not be affordable at the pace college tuition seems to increase every year – without fail!

The educational platform which the College of the Ozarks offers is unparalleled today. They go out of their way to insure students succeed by financially paying for college, in their field of study, and the college experience itself with their Christian campus setting!

Students who attend here are thrilled that they have no student loans to pay off after graduation – and are virtually debt free from attending college!

Does it get any better then this?

No, it really does not.
