What are Unclaimed Scholarships?

What are unclaimed scholarships for students who are willing to search out such funds and does unclaimed scholarship money really exist?

unclaimed scholarships
What are Unclaimed Scholarships?

There is sometimes a common perception that there are millions of dollars available in unclaimed scholarships for students who are willing to search out such funds. There are also many people who state that a large percentage of the unclaimed scholarship money is only a myth and that such funds do not actually exist.

The truth of the matter regarding unclaimed scholarships may actually exist somewhere in the middle of these two viewpoints. Below we explore what are unclaimed scholarships.

Unclaimed Scholarships are Unusual Scholarships

Unrewarded scholarship funds do appear to exist to some degree. Unclaimed college scholarships may primarily stem from rather restrictive unknown scholarships that have an extremely small pool of eligible scholarship applicants. Such unusual scholarships might include those that are only offered to applicants who meet a rare set of characteristics. Due to this, these unclaimed scholarships may result in left over funds that are not issued annually because eligible applicants did not apply for those unusual scholarships.

Employer Sponsored Scholarships are Unclaimed

There are also often claims that billions of dollars in scholarships went unclaimed over the previous year. Although it would certainly be nice if this were true and students could simply claim those unclaimed scholarships, this type of statement is often based on older estimates regarding unused tuition benefits offered by employers that the general public simply would not be eligible to receive. According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, approximately 85% of the funds that are referred to as unclaimed scholarships may actually be employer-paid education benefits. Many businesses offer to pay education benefits to employees as a way of enhancing the quality of their workforce.

Unclaimed Scholarships may be Hard to Get

It would appear that unclaimed scholarships may be available but they do not appear to be available in the easy to obtain and abundant numbers that are typically reported. If you do have an unusual talent or a rare set of characteristics it might be possible that you are eligible for some obscure scholarship funds which other students would not be eligible to receive, but it would be best not to count on such unclaimed scholarship funds to fund the entire cost of your education. This is particularly true when you consider the fact that there are other ways you can fund your education, including numerous easier scholarship programs that are not based on a restrictive set of eligibility criteria.

Never Pay Fees to Get Unclaimed Scholarships

Students trying to find unclaimed scholarships may actually come across a number of different claims. One of those is that by paying a small fee you will be provided with a comprehensive list of scholarships for which the student is eligible. Such claims also frequently include the claim that the unclaimed college scholarships come from a large database. The reality is that students should never feel as though they need to pay to receive a database of scholarship information, even for unclaimed scholarships. The best and biggest scholarship databases are actually available with no need to pay to receive the information. The number of unclaimed college scholarships claimed to be available by some services can oftentimes be misleading due to the fact that individual sponsors may actually offer hundreds of different types of scholarships.

Check for Unclaimed Scholarship Money at the College You Attend

Prospective scholarship applicants that do want to make certain they do not miss out on any unclaimed scholarships may wish to check with the institution they plan to attend regarding any obscure scholarships that may be issued directly through that institution.

Unclaimed scholarships that are available to a small pool of applicants are sometimes offered directly through a college or university. Applicants to that school or students who are already attending that school may have a better opportunity to receive those limited or restrictive scholarships than the general population.

Unclaimed scholarship money may be available, but not in the abundant and easy to grab quantities that are sometimes reported. If you have an unusual talent or the right last name, you might be eligible for unheard about & obscure pots of scholarship gold for which most other students can’t apply. The scholarship application pool is small, or non-existent. These savings vehicles may be better than college saving funds for some families.

***According to a fairly recent study by Nerd Scholar, the higher education team at Nerd Wallet, stated that high school graduates in the U.S. left more than $2.9 billion in free federal grant money unused over the last academic year!!!

Applying for scholarships is certainly a good way to pursue an advanced education and also to help defray the costs of a higher education. There are many scholarships that are available that offer awards to thousands of deserving students each year. While unclaimed scholarships may not exist in the numbers and amounts that are frequently reported, there are unclaimed scholarship opportunities that do exist for eligible students.

How Unclaimed Scholarships become Unused

The term unclaimed scholarships is used to refer to scholarships which students who have the qualifications to apply and win, never took the time to apply.

Unclaimed Scholarships
Unclaimed Scholarships

The term unclaimed scholarships is used to refer to scholarships which students who have , or had the qualifications to apply and win a scholarship never took the time to apply; or did apply and win, but never followed through with accepting it.

This usually happens with the winning student having a last-minute abrupt ‘change of plans’ in regards to their college careers. Their winning scholarships then become unused!

Unusual circumstances tend to come into play at the final buzzer (so to speak) and everything suddenly changes for the student.

For instance the below unusual events may occur in regards to a scholarship becoming ‘unclaimed’ or ‘unused’:

* A student applies and wins a scholarship, but also wins another one too. The first scholarship may have a restrictive clause that prevents the student from accepting it IF they win another scholarship of equal of higher value. The student never responds and the first award becomes unclaimed. * Student applies and wins a scholarship, but the scholarship is only for the student to attend a particular college ONLY. The student overlooked this fact before applying, or never really knew this was the case. Many scholarship criteria cause’s detail’s like this to be hidden, or buried sometimes. Nevertheless; the student does not even respond back to the scholarship sponsor once getting the award letter in the mail which states this fact, and which cause’s the student to feel it was a scam in the first place. * Student applies and wins a scholarship. The scholarship may be for students who only will be studying in a certain field ONLY. The student changes his field of study at the last-minute and proceeds to attend a college with his/her new field choice – which was not the one which he applied for. * Student applies and wins a scholarship, but also wins many others at other schools who then decides to take the OTHER financial offers and could care less about the first one. * Student applies and wins a scholarship and just decides college is not what he wants to do at this time. Maybe it’s because the student met a significant other and feels that he/she may lose them IF they attend college (bad choice if they do!). Higher education plans are put on hold to see if things will work out (they never usually do at this stage in life) with the relationship. Another unclaimed scholarship!

Unclaimed Scholarships becoming Guaranteed Scholarships

Another classic unused scholarship scenario is the scholarship is never awarded because all the applicants did not meet the criteria for winning.

This one is more common than most think. This is how an unclaimed scholarship is obtained quickly. Sometimes these unclaimed awards are converted to guaranteed scholarships suddenly, or rolled over to the next quarter or year to be given out.

For those who are wondering what a guaranteed scholarship is, it’s an award given out to students who match up with the criteria exactly, such as ACT scores, GPA and other distinguished accomplishments.

Many times GPA and ACT scores are never used, but other specific past accomplishments ONLY. This becomes a paperwork shuffle only, with no evaluation of applicants whatsoever.

These guaranteed scholarships are quick and easy – IF you match up with the stated scholarship criteria! Students should apply to those awards which they match up well to. Your chances of getting one is greater because of this.

Our best advice which most never do!

Best unclaimed scholarship advice is to go into the FinAids office to see what is available for you. Just don’t think a list of scholarships,  but all other forms of student aid. It may be special grants, such as need based financial aid given out ONLY by the college itself with a criteria that fits you perfectly. This is the only way to find out what the college itself has available.

They will tell you on the spot many times if you fit in one of their student financial aid programs. They will tell you to fill out many particular forms. If they do, fill them out and turn them in ASAP.

This is how it’s best done!

Of all the advice given out, this may be the best which many times is never followed through on, and produces the most student financial aid for students. After all, the best unclaimed scholarship is the one you apply for and get – whatever it may be called!

CIEE Scholarships to Study Abroad

Financial assistance offered through CIEE scholarships can be used to help defray travel costs and program fees. Don’t let these become unclaimed scholarships!

ciee scholarships
CIEE Scholarships to Study Abroad

CIEE awards more than $1 million in study abroad scholarships each year to students who plan to study overseas through a CIEE program. Financial assistance offered through CIEE scholarships can be used to help defray travel costs and program fees. CIEE is committed to assisting students from a wide array of backgrounds.

The CIEE Global Access Initiative or GAIN scholarship was established for the purpose of assisting students in overcoming the primary barriers to studying abroad, primarily, curriculum requirements, and cost. GAIN assists by providing financial help to students who are economically disadvantages. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on financial need and the duration of study.

CIEE scholarships are also available through the Ping Foundation. Dr. Charles Ping served on the CIEE Board of Directors from 1993 through 2004. The goal of the Foundation is to advocate for international educational exchange, funding of scholarship programs, and research designed to advance the field of international educational exchange. Several awards are available through the Ping Foundation.

One of those awards is the CIEE International Study Programs Scholarship. This award is given to students who demonstrate both financial need and academic excellence. Awards amounts are $2,000 for year-long or semester programs and $1,000 for summer programs.

The Jennifer Ritzmann Scholarship for Studies in Tropical Biology was established in memory of Jennifer Ritzmann with the permission of her parents. Ms. Ritzmann was a fall participant in the Tropical Biology Program at Monteverde, Costa Rica in 1998. A junior from Ohio University, Ms. Ritzmann died in a tragic accident. She was committed to the preservation of the rain forest and it was her dream to perform forestry work in Costa Rica. It is the Foundation’s hope that through this scholarship other students with similar goals and dreams can be helped. The scholarship is awarded on a semester basis in the amount of $1,000.

The John E. Bowman Travel Grant was established in the memory of John E. Bowman. Mr. Bowman was the Executive Director of CIEE from 1952 to 1979. The goal of these awards is to provide help to student participating in CIEE study abroad programs in locations that are non-traditional. Applicants must have plans to study at a CIEE Study Center in eligible locations including Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Awards are $1,000 each and are given for the purpose of defraying the cost of travel.

The Kathleen McDermott Scholarship was established in 2012 in honor of Kathleen McDermott. Dr. McDermott served on the Executive Committee of the CIEE Academic Consortium Board. For more than 20 years, Dr. McDermott served in different roles at Columbia University, including as the first residential dean and adviser for study abroad and fellowships. To be eligible for this CIEE scholarship, applicants must be a public health or nursing major and must participate in a CIEE Community Public Health study abroad program. Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500 based on financial need and duration of study. Awards are available for summer, yearlong programs, or semester programs.

The Michael Stohl Scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Michael Stohl in 2012. The scholarship is given in recognition of Dr. Stohl’s contributions to CIEE and in commemoration of his retirement from the Board of Directors. The goal of the awards is to promote participation in CIEE programs of students who are economically disadvantaged, from non-traditional backgrounds or first generation college students. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 based on financial need and duration of study.

The Peter Wollitzer Scholarships for Study in Asia were established by the Ping Foundation in 2006 in memory of Peter Wollitzer. Mr. Wollitzer served as Regional Director at the University of California Education Abroad Program and had a long-standing affiliation with CIEE. Participants must be willing to participate in a CIEE study center in Asia. One award is granted each semester in the amount of $2,000. Two CIEE scholarship awards of $500 are given for summer programs.

Since the CIEE scholarships for studying abroad aren’t too well-known, they could become unclaimed college scholarships. Not every student wants to go overseas to study, so the scholarship applicant pool may be small on certain years. Those are the times where these could be an easy scholarship to get as well.

The Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships should never go Unclaimed

Unclaimed college scholarships! The Kalamazoo Promise scholarships never go unclaimed because they are free college tuition!

easy scholarships
The Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships

If you are a resident in Kalamazoo there is no reason for you to worry about financial aid anymore, thanks to the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships, which are provided to allow students get free tuition in the universities that are found in the state of Michigan.

These easy scholarships should never go unclaimed because they are free college tuition!

In as far as eligibility is concerned this scholarship program is available for all the students that attend Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS). In line with the availability of the program to students who go to school within the region, it also follows that the applicants must also be living within the boundaries of the KPS.

Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships Eligibility Requirements

For you to be eligible for the scholarships you must also have achieved all the high school years that are necessary. One of the main reasons why students are often encouraged to apply for these college scholarships is because of the fact that the scholarships are offered in perpetuity.

Therefore you can be sure that even after you have applied, so many years later on your kids and their kids might also be able to apply for consideration.

The promise is often a scholarship aid that covers a 4 year period, or up to the time that you graduate with your bachelor’s degree, or until you attain 130 credits, whichever of the three will come first.

The scholarship program is also flexible in the sense that from the day you graduate from your high school education you are allowed up to 10 years to use the Promise award. Apart from that, you are free to start and stop it at any given time.

Those who receive the unclaimed scholarship need to understand that it goes basically towards taking care of tuition fees and other fees that are deemed mandatory. As soon as you start your senior year, you can apply for consideration.

Apart from that, in the same year you can use the appeal process to secure further financial aid in the event that you are going through some challenges, including but not necessarily limited to custody issues, loss of a parent or guardian or even those who are placed under foster care.

In the event that you have already started on the Kalamazoo Promise but you need to leave and return later on, your attendance will be calculated from the date when the most recent enrollment process was held. Therefore you need to take these dates into consideration.

The benefits that are awarded to students applying to the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarship program are graduated on a sliding scale because the aim in the long run is to make sure that all the attendees are able to get the maximum benefit possible from the program.

One of the main reasons for this is to encourage the families of the students who live within the predetermined region to make sure that they decide early enough to enroll their students into the program, and to ensure that they keep their kids into the program all the way until they graduate.

When you are being accepted into any college, it is not necessary for you to fill in a FAFSA form. However, you have to take note of the fact that it is virtually impossible for you to apply for any scholarship or financial aid in any university or college without filling in and submitting one.

Besides, the financial support available through the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarship is not listed in the FAFSA form. Therefore you will not be disqualified from applying to other financial aid programs by virtue of the fact that you have applied to and are receiving Kalamazoo Promise Scholarship as is the case with a host of the other financial aid programs.

Once you have received the award, it is important that you maintain some predetermined academic performances to be considered for subsequent disbursement. Students must attain at least a 2.0 GPA and also be enrolled as full-time students in the institution within which they applied and were accepted.

Unclaimed college scholarships will never be found with the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships. This program is about as financially strong for student aid as it gets! Go to: how to apply to the Kalamazoo Promise Scholarships.

If there are easier college scholarships out there; please let us know in the comment section found at the bottom of every webpage on this site.

We are truly impressed with this program and salute the people who made this possible!

Scholarships for Illegal Immigrants or Undocumented Students

There are some unknown scholarships for illegal immigrants or undocumented students. Some are private illegal immigrant scholarships.

scholarships for illegal immigrants
Scholarships for Illegal Immigrants

While financial aid may not always be available for undocumented students, there are some unknown scholarships for illegal immigrants. Most federal student aid does require the recipient to be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident with a green card or an eligible non-citizen. In a few states, some students may be able to qualify for in-state tuition even if they are undocumented. In addition, there are also a few unknown private scholarships that are available to illegal immigrants. These private scholarships for illegal immigrants do not require the recipient to be a resident or U.S. citizen or to have a social security number.

Scholarships for Illegal Immigrants Sources

Excellent sources for such unclaimed scholarships include the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund. Another potential source for such illegal immigrant scholarships includes the Latino College Dollars Scholarships for Latino Students.

The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund sponsors a law school scholarship as a way of supporting the new generation of attorneys who will help to advance the civil rights of members of the Latino community. This fund provides illegal immigrant scholarships of varying amounts to a number of students each year. The little known scholarships for undocumented students are awarded based on student commitment to serving the Latino community in the field of law as well as their prior achievements and potential for future advancement and achievement along with financial need. Prospective students must be currently or will be enrolled full-time in a law school that is accredited in the United States.

Core First Annual Que LLueva Cafe Scholarship for Illegal Immigrants

The Core First Annual Que LLueva Cafe Scholarship ranges in value from $500 to $1,000 and is sponsored by Chicano Organizing & Research in Education. This award is available to students who are in California. To be eligible, the student must be an undocumented student of either Chicano or Latino descent who is a graduating senior and who will be enrolling in an accredited university or college in the United States or Puerto Rico. This illegal immigrant scholarship was founded with the purpose of providing a direct response and assistance to aspiring scholars who might otherwise be prevented from continuing their education due to their undocumented status. Interested applicants for this unclaimed scholarship for undocumented students should be either a high school student or GED graduate who will be enrolling for the first time in an accredited university or high school. Applicants must not be current college students. All applications for this immigrant scholarship must be postmarked by February 25th.

SALEF Fulfilling Our Dreams Scholarship for Undocumented Students

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible and must also be active in community involvement. Santa Ana College in Orange County College Scholarship for Illegal Immigrants

Students planning to attend Santa Ana College in Orange County, California may wish to apply for their scholarship for illegal immigrants; which is awarded to foreign nationals, including illegal aliens. This memorial scholarship has a value of $2,500. The purpose of this immigrant scholarship is to honor Tan Ngoc Tran, who was a student activist.

California Dream Act Scholarships for Illegal Students

Undocumented immigrants in the state of California will also now be eligible to receiver further unknown scholarship assistance following the passage of a bill into law that will allow illegal immigrants to receive scholarships that are privately funded in order to attend public colleges and universities in the state. Known as the California Dream Act, the law aims to assist illegal immigrants who have earned a diploma after they have attended a minimum of three years of high school in California. California students who are not documented are also eligible to qualify for in-state tuition.

Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship from the Funny Guy

Jerry Seinfeld scholarships are given to those students who have displayed outstanding academic progress and have financial need and not a fun scholarship for being funny.

jerry-seinfeld-scholarship
Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship

UPDATE: 3/9/2018
Apparently – The Jerry Seinfeld Scholarship Program is not being offered at this time.

Jerry Seinfeld scholarships are given to those students who have displayed outstanding academic progress and have financial need and not a fun scholarship for being funny. As opposed to the popular and funny character in the television series, “Seinfeld,” Seinfeld scholars are largely good people who need a hand trying to get through school. Established in 2000 by the truly funny comedian Jerry Seinfield and his family, the program has provided funding to many students in New York City at over 175 schools in which the Seinfeld scholarship is available. Created in collaboration with an organization called PENCIL which works to build relationships between business leaders and schools, the Jerry Seinfeld scholarship represents an excellent opportunity for students in the New York area.

While Jerry Seinfeld began his career as a comedian, interested applicants should understand that this is not a joke and they should take their applications very seriously. The applicant pool for the Seinfeld scholarship is going to be fairly big, so making sure that an application stands out is going to be incredibly important. This is going to be best achieved by balancing a strong submission and personal activities which will be weighed carefully by the selection committee. These are going to include leadership roles, volunteer activities and other extracurricular activities in local communities.

The award amount for the Seinfeld scholarship goes as high as $10,000. It is designed specifically to cover additional funds which have not been met through other funding sources, excluding student loans. On top of access to financial assistance, recipients of the award will also be given other forms of help including college prep programs, mentoring services and various service activities. Having this sort of support will really help a student through the school year and relate what they are learning in the classroom to their future careers. Various service activities will also help a student out with applications for not only school but also employment, showing a clear dedication not only to getting work done but going above and beyond what is required of an individual.

Eligibility for the Seinfeld scholarship is pretty well-defined on the website. Only United States citizens are able to apply for the program and they must be graduating in June of the year in which they are requesting financial assistance. All applicants are expected to have a grade point average of no less than 85 on a 100 scale and be planning to attend college the following fall immediately following graduation at an accredited university. The university selected by an applicant cannot be a community college but rather must be a four-year institution. Applicants should also be able to show a strong need for financial assistance and the total income of their family should be no more than $60,000 a year. Finally all applicants must file a FAFSA request and be a legal resident of New York, alien or native. Application material is made available online as of December 1 and the deadline will be announced the following year. As a result all applicants should pay close attention to the website to be sure they do not miss the announcement date.

The Seinfeld scholarship does not accept applications from all schools in New York, and often focuses on particular areas of interest. For example in 2010, applicants applying for the 2011 academic year had to be graduating from high schools in the Queens borough of New York City. Because of the occasional variation in where applications are coming from students would be well advised to look over the particulars of a given year’s application guidelines before submitting an application. While the program may have been offered for graduates in Queens for 2011 awards, 2012 awards could come from the same area or somewhere else in the city. It is important to pay attention to this especially because it would be a waste of time for anybody from an ineligible borough to apply for the program when their energies could be put to use applying to programs they are actually eligible for. So always pay attention to website when applying and, should your area be selected as one of interest, good luck in the application process.

* Funny and Fun Scholarships

Most Government Scholarships are Unique

Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are available though they tend to represent a smaller total of scholarships.

government-scholarships
Government Scholarships

The image of what a standard scholarship represents in the United States is typically idealized in the image of a private foundation or group offering money based on merit for various students with differing eligibility requirements. Many students may be surprised to find that unique government scholarships and grants are also available, though they tend to represent a smaller total of the overall little known about scholarship pool. These federal government scholarships which are normally offered on a competitive basis are often given out by individual departments or groups at the federal level. It is very common for these government college scholarships to be offered to graduate students, but there are also some programs available to undergraduates as well. The reason that these programs are often given out to specifically graduate students relates to the fact that the US government is often interested in encouraging specialized development for individuals who may be interested in employment with the government after graduation. As these are often awarded on a competitive basis, students interested in government scholarships should be prepared to present themselves in the best light possible, scoring high in academic material and, especially for graduate students, be able to present a clear idea of their overall academic goals.

Since these unheard about government scholarships for students are given out by individual departments at the federal level, students should be able to identify potential sources of funding by being able to identify their career interests. For instance, those interested atmospheric or oceanic sciences should look at the national oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for access to gov scholarships which may apply to them.

Considering NOAA, students interested in a government scholarship which focuses on atmospheric or oceanic sciences should be pleased to know that the annual Ernest F. Hollings scholarship returns in 2011. Unlike many federal government scholarships, the Ernest F Hollings program is available primarily to undergraduates. An exceptional program, this fed gov scholarship gave out over 100 awards in 2010 of up to $8,000 as well as making available internships for interested students at NOAA during breaks from school. In order to be eligible for this government scholarship an applicant must be an US citizen while maintaining a full-time status at an accredited university in the US. The cumulative grade point average for all completed courses must be at a minimum 3.0 and all applicants must be majoring in a program related to atmospheric or oceanic studies. Applications for this program are made available on October 1 of every year and the deadline for all materials is February 4.

An excellent government scholarship for college through the Department of Homeland Security exists for students who are interested in studying a field related to the DHS’s related fields of studies. Broadly speaking these fields can include agricultural sciences, mathematics, life sciences, physical sciences, psychology, social sciences, computer sciences and engineering. Amongst these fields are specific courses or subjects which the DHS requires students to be pursuing in their studies. As a result, when applying for this unique gov scholarship, students should look over these eligibility requirements very carefully. The DHS offers government scholarships at the undergraduate level providing the full cost of tuition and related fees while also giving a $1,000 a month stipend during the school year and an additional $5,000 during a mandatory 10 week internship. In order to be eligible for the DHS government scholarship program students must be an US citizen and working towards as bachelor’s degree. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA at a minimum while also maintaining this throughout the course of them receiving the scholarship. Applicants must be in their second or third year of studies and be available to attend the 10 week summer internship.

Another Security scholarship for students interested in US security and plan on getting into this field in college consider of the Lint Center for National Security Studies Scholarship Program. This is not a government sponsored program but deserves mentioning because it’s so closely related. It’s intent is to create awareness of national security so as to attract more young people to an occupation in national security. The center works to provide educational opportunities for those who want careers in security which also includes counterintelligence.

One of the nice things about this program is that those students who win an award will receive the financial benefits from the program for two years. Like bursaries common in other countries, students who win a DHS government scholarship will be required to work for at least one year at Homeland Security after graduation. All materials must be submitted to this program no later than January 12.

According to the U.S. Patent Office, Dr Pepper was first served on December 1, 1885, beating Coca-Cola by a single year. It was introduced nationally as a new kind of soda pop containing 24 different flavors during the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Dr Pepper was originally formulated by a Waco pharmacist in his drug store. Once local residents learned of the new soda fountain drink, they quickly began ordering what was known as a Waco. Today, Dr Pepper has grown into a national favorite and is committed to helping students develop their dreams through the Dr Pepper scholarship program. Come on!

I must do something about this!

This will promote more student drinking (as if there isn’t enough of it already)!

Colorado is one of the states which legalized marijuana and I also thought that “Now they want to make driving while drinking or getting stoned OK too?

It may appear at first that Colorado wants to revert back to the Wild Wild West days –  when just about anything goes!

And yes, there are pro’s and con’s with just about everything in life especially when it comes to legalizing a controlled substance (or one that can make people make choices which they normally would not have if they were not using it).

Only when I did my research on this unusual scholarship that I started to agree with the reason behind this driving and drinking scholarship for Colorado students.

“No” our editors did not smoke anything  to tell you we agree with whats behind this drunk driving buzzed essay scholarship either.

The angel is in the details that’s all; and after I tell you a little more about it you may agree with us too. So here’s the long and short of this unique drug or alcohol induced scholarship program.

Unclaimed Scholarships for Drunk or Buzzed Students

The unclaimed scholarship for driving while drinking or buzzed is for $1,000 and any US citizen can apply who will be attending a higher education school in the US. May 1st is deadline for submission of student essays in which students are to write about their buzzed driving habit.

The scholarship is sponsored by Christian Schwaner, a private defense attorney in Colorado Springs. He officially called it the ‘First Step Scholarship. He launched his financial award purely in an attempt to help lessen the vast number of high school students who drive while under the influence of alcohol, or high on drugs.

Mr Schwaner got his inspiration for creating such an award being a defense attorney representing multitudes of young drivers who made the mistake of driving intoxicated or high on drugs. He feels that this unusual scholarship will help students admit their mistakes once they start researching the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and this will help them to not do it any longer.

He states in his own words:

“I was trying to find what might be something that is a light-bulb moment for these kids, ” Schwaner said. “Self-admission and self-education are very powerful tools.”

Rep. Mark Waller, R-Colorado Springs, agrees with Mr Schwaner’s idea and has stated that “it has the potential to be “incredibly powerful” in reducing drunken driving”.

I agree with Mr Schwaner because it may be like having a watershed moment for many younger drivers who start driving today, which many people need in the first place to truly change ones behavior on just about anything in life; especially drugs and alcohol.

Apparently statistics indicate that the average person drives nearly 80 times before they are arrested for drinking and driving. Now if after the 3rd to 10th time kids start to do some heavy thinking about how dangerous it is to drive a motor vehicle while intoxicated; then life’s can be potentially saved from this.

If this programs helps many young drivers admit their mistakes of driving while under the influence and how much pain and suffering it can cause in other Peoples life’s, and then go and educate their peers and others about this then it will become a highly touted program that has no equal of its kind.

Students who drive while under the influence must realize that having a driver’s license is a privilege to drive a motor vehicle in the USA and that by having a driver’s license they are subject to the laws which clearly state that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol and can be subject to losing ones drivers license or imprisonment.

Unfortunately, many young (and other) drivers learn this the hard way and kill innocent people while doing recreational drinking and or drugs and then jump in a car.

Hopefully, there will be many other scholarship sponsors who offer these same type of awards which calls attention and educates the dangers in order to reduce motor vehicle operated deaths caused by younger drivers believing it is OK to drink, or use drugs and then drive.

Uncovering more Unclaimed Scholarships from Unlikely Places

Unclaimed scholarships are found in unlikely places that are easy to overlook. They are easier scholarships to get then most others because of the places they are coming from which use a less conventional way of evaluating the winners.

Consider the Community Foundation of St. Clare County which over-sees 32 scholarship programs and has given various students over $180,000 in scholarship money so far in 2016 to 86 students heading off to college. These are unclaimed scholarships because they are overlooked by many students looking for student financial aid to help pay for some of their college.

The CFSCC does not appear to be a place to look for scholarships & grants; but they have them! Many counties across the country have the same thing too in all areas. So, if you are reading this, start checking for Community Foundations close to you so you can apply to their unclaimed scholarships & grants.

Applications for this award open up yearly on January 1st through March. You can go to the Community Foundation of St. Clare County scholarships to see more details about it.

The Arlington Community Foundation is another example which has given out 4 million in scholarship funds to 900 some students over the last 19 years. In 2016 they gave (78) awards worth $473,700 ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 so students can attend colleges & universities and trade schools.

They are easy scholarships to get!

Federal Credit Unions are another great opportunity for students to look for unclaimed scholarships. Credit Union scholarships can be easier then most to win, because of their unconventional way of awarding college money. Many have essays students will be required to turn in about subjects the Credit Union chooses.

Evaluating essays is subjective at best; so there’s really no right or wrong answers, and students can be selected almost at random based on how the reader feels about your essay.

As an example; Redstone Federal Credit Union in Huntsville, Alabama awarded 14 students $65,000 in scholarship college money. All of the 14 winners will be attending various colleges and universities across the country too.

Again, those who are reading this should contact your local credit unions to inquire about awards for college students. If you or your parents are members then see if your credit union has student financial aid awards so you can apply to them. They can be the easiest scholarship you ever got.

Also; look into the bank you are banking with because many banks are notorious for having unheard about awards for students. Just call your bank and ask them if they have scholarships for college students.

Easy to Apply Unclaimed Scholarships from Community Foundations

Unclaimed scholarships are those easy to apply scholarships that come along unexpectedly; in which you apply to them and are awarded very quickly.

Easy to Apply Unclaimed Scholarships from Community Foundations
Easy to Apply Unclaimed Scholarships from Community Foundations

Many times unclaimed scholarships are those easy to apply scholarships that come along unexpectedly; mostly by stumbling upon them, in which you apply to them and are awarded very quickly.

You may know right off that you qualify enough to apply for them by quickly glancing at the qualifying guidelines and intuitively feel that you can win.

Many times students don’t apply because they feel it may be too difficult to win.

*Bingo – unclaimed scholarship!

If you feel that way then everyone else does. You may get mediocre candidates applying to them and then they go on to win those seemingly hard awards.

All along it could have easily been you who should have won – if you had only applied!

Finding the time to apply is key because most educational awards do take time filling out their applications; and there are so many hours in the day if you work and attend school presently.

Community Foundations offer Easy to Apply Unclaimed Scholarships!

An exciting new unclaimed scholarship opportunity was discovered by our staff that may give applicants more of a chance at winning awards because they may be under the radar.

Less students apply to them because of this, which in turn dramatically increases your odds for winning.

These easier scholarships; unclaimed by those who should actually apply for them and win (but don’t because they don’t know about them), are offered through lessor known about Foundations.

One in particular is the Winston-Salem Foundation. It’s a 94 year-old community foundation encompassing 1,300 funds. These funds were created by many charitable individuals and organizations which serve the purpose of improving the quality of life in a particular area; or even beyond that in other areas too.

Their mission is to invest in their community by making philanthropy & its benefits available to all. They go about this by:

  • Assisting individuals & organizations with their charitable giving
  • Making grants to nonprofit organizations
  • Providing financial aid to college students
  • Offering community leadership on many local issues

One such way that they help designated areas is by providing scholarships to college students! In 2013 the Winston-Salem Foundation had assets of 359 million and provided 576 students with about 1 million in scholarships – that’s $1700 each in easy scholarships!

I’m sure, since it is a Foundation which has a purpose of helping people, has a more liberal scholarship criteria then the norm would, making applying easier, and awards given out even more simpler to attain.

In fact, the Winston-Salem Foundation is the 45th largest community foundation in the US, so there are many other Foundations for students out there to target for student financial aid.

One way to search for them is by state – IE….’Michigan community foundations’. This will keep you busy to see how many unclaimed scholarships you can find to apply to at these various Michigan foundations, or other states you search for.

You can do this for the state you presently reside in. The Winston-Salem Foundation focuses on the quality of life in Forsyth County, so you may want to narrow your search to Foundations in specific counties.

I’m sure the competition for these awards will be a whole lot thinner then other well known scholarships in which thousands of applicants apply to every year.

You may even run across other scholarship opportunities from community based organizations which have yearly educational scholarship awards in which you can also apply to. The applicant pool should also be thin here as well, increasing you odds at winning one.

Applying to Foundation scholarships are usually not as rigid as applying to your standard scholarships. Writing a good essay could be the key which hits on all the points they are looking for could easily land you some unclaimed college scholarship money.

You may be the perfect candidate according to the Foundations criteria; but if you can’t write about it well, then you may not be considered as a winner – so make sure it’s a nice read!

Unclaimed scholarships from community Foundations may be the best type of unclaimed scholarships going right now, so get your easy college scholarships by searching for them and applying to their educational philanthropy scholarships, and their benefits available to all!

Unclaimed Scholarships from many Colleges

Unclaimed scholarships for college are found at many colleges today, but you may have to apply to the colleges first to see them and apply later then normal too.

Unclaimed Scholarships for College
Unclaimed Scholarships for College

Unclaimed scholarships for college are found at many college’s today, but you may have to apply to the colleges first to see them; and apply later then normal too.

Thats when the magic happens – after you apply and get to see your financial award letter.

These are the easy scholarships for college!

You sit back after you submit your online application and FAFSA to colleges you’re intersted in and wait for the colleges to work up your award letter.

Certain unclaimed scholarships for college are those financial awards you really don’t know about until after you have submited your application. They are given away to those who fall into a certain qualifying standard which colleges establish for themselves and can even change during the year so as to include more students for various reasons – which are usually based on low enrollment.

Remember; colleges need student enrollment to survive, and keep yearly federal student financial aid coming in from the government. So when enrollment is down they go into survival mode; which means they lower the qualifying gates to entice more students to attend.

They do this by lowering qualifying GPA’s for scholarships, grants and ACT scores. They may even create programs such as Opportunity Grants (which may mean someone with a 20 or below ACT and/or 2.00 GPA’s.

In other words they are allowing students in who previously didn’t qualify; and awarding them great financial aid packages!

This is all good as far as we are concerned on this website because our motto is that all higher education should be fully subsidized for any student who wants to attend college in order to better themselves in life.

When people do graduate form college, they enrich everyone around them, including themselves, and this tranlates into a better world for all of us.

Now; how do I know this?

I’m speaking from recent experience here. Let me give you a personal example of how it worked for me.

It just so happens that my twin children applied to a few colleges; and one with a 3.95 GPA, and a 28 ACT score got a financial aid award equal to my other child who had a 2.94 GPA and 20 ACT.

Now I might add that the 20 ACT score child applied to many colleges to find that; but he was persistant. We both tried to find colleges with falling enrollment over the last two years.

He also applied to colleges longer (into July) – which is the time that many falling enrollment universities start to lower their qualifying standards. This is the time they start to panic and will put every student just about in one way or another with all kinds of newly formed grants, scholarships and financial aid awards.

The alternative for them is possible extinction simply because operating cost can sink any ship – even colleges if there’s no captain on board overseeing their financials.

Remember colleges are a business, and students are the product that produce their revenue to sustain them. In fact these procedures are most likely already in place; which is why the 20 ACT got the same as the 28 ACT in the story above.

It might have taken longer to get, but this is how unclaimed scholarships can be gotten.

If students aren’t picky about where to attend college, then the above can happen to just about anyone.

Apply to universities and colleges with falling enrollments, and later might be better then sooner.

Unclaimed scholarships = easy scholarships.

This is how I accidentally ran across, and got unclaimed college scholarships with my two darlings – and you can too!

What a pleasant surprise!

There are different types of financial aid that are offered to students. You can apply for financial aid as a freshman, a transfer student, or a continuing student. Apart from that there are also scholarship programs for graduate students and law students.

This is not all there is to the financial aid that is offered to the students. The school offers grants based on the financial needs and this is normally from the information that they get from FAFSA. Two of the largest grant programs that are issued through the school to students are the Federal Pell Grant and the Ohio College Opportunity Grant.

Federal Pell Grant is available to all undergraduates who are eligible and is offered based on the level of financial need of the applicant. Awards can be anywhere from $602 to $5730, and they are normally awarded based on the credit hours enrolled.

Ohio residents who are enrolled in the school will also be able to enjoy the Ohio College Opportunity Grant which is normally prorated and is awarded either on full time or on part-time student enrollment in the institution.

The school will however, also make available other federal grant programs; The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and the TEACH Grant. Students must take note of the fact that the grants are normally accepted automatically, and if you wish to decline the grants, you can get in touch with the Student Financial Aid Office for due procedure.

The university also makes available loans for students. Once your expenses have been taken care of through grants and scholarships, the remaining balance will be taken care of through loans that are issued to those who apply for them. Take note that while the scholarships, grants and other types of financial aid are not to be paid back, loans must always be paid back.

UA also offers federal work-study programs for their students. This is a program that is funded by the federal government and is campus based. The aim is to provide the students with part time jobs so that they are able to meet their financial needs. The jobs are normally available both off and on campus, and most of them pay minimum wages at least. However there are some others that pay higher than the average student earnings in the work-study program.

In order for you to apply for or qualify for such a program there are some requirements that you have to meet, which are normally stipulated by every university or educational institution. Besides, students can also enroll for student employment in the school either on or off campus.

Apply to find out about unclaimed University of Akron Scholarships and Student Aid. They have a large amount of monies available and they want to use it up so they get the same amount for next year.

This is one way how unclaimed scholarships happen for students and it can all be very easy to do – just apply and find out for yourself!

Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College

Unclaimed scholarships can come in many forms when it comes to student aid for college and Hope College in Holland Michigan has unclaimed college scholarships.

Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College
Unclaimed Scholarships from Hope College

Unclaimed scholarships can come in many forms when it comes to student aid for college and Hope College in Holland Michigan has unclaimed college scholarships that in my opinion may be one of the best to come across.

Why?

Much of it is based on family income.

This makes it simple to qualify if you have a chance for student aid or not.

Hope College, Michigan has been at the forefront when it comes to helping students go through their studies without having to deal with challenges in terms of financial aid.

The scholarship system at Hope College is a bit different from the same in other institutions especially since they work with families in order to make sure that the studies are as affordable as can be.

The financial support system has been structured in such a way that students get to enjoy a wholesome package that includes a combination of employment at the campus, loans and grants.

College tuition is expensive because Hope is a private Christian college, and most students usually find it very hard to go through with their studies because of the financial constraints from home. However, through the financial aid system Hope College is able to assist the students on their way to getting good quality education to enable them become better people in society.

This is an all-inclusive financial aid system that is structured around family contributions. The eligibility level for financial aid depends on how much your parents earn (annual income). Your eligibility for the funding will therefore depend on how much your family contributes or expects to contribute, and the college cost.

The lower your parents combined household income is, the more scholarships grants you receive mostly from Hope college themselves. It’s expensive to attend Hope, but the greater the financial need the more student aid is awarded to students – and its generous!

Hope Scholarships Grants

There are three different kinds of financial aid packages that are awarded to students in this kind of structure. There are scholarships and grants, loans, and finally the students are also able to get support in terms of employment on the campus. The work-study structure makes it easier for lots of students to study as they get to earn, in the process making up for the loans.

There are two types of loans that are availed to students in this institution. There are loans that are based on need, and the ones that are not based on need. The loans that are not based on need are usually available to students and their parents irrespective of your financial need. There are different repayment options available and the interest rates are also varied.

The loans based on need on the other hand have become a valuable asset to students and families. These allow you to carry forward some of the payments of your education. When this happens, you will be able to start making the repayments only after you have graduated, or in the event that you have withdrawn from college.

Federal Work Study big at Hope College!

One of the other alternatives that you can look into when you need financial support from the institution is the student employment opportunity. The federal work study awards are usually awarded to students to become part of their financial aid. The students who seek this opportunity usually get preference when it comes to job placement on the campus. Either way you will need to make sure that you pay more attention to your studies.

The work-study alternative usually has some really great results for the students, with studies indicating that students who are on part-time jobs usually have a higher tendency to perform better than those who do not do the same. The reason for this is because such students get to plan for their time accordingly. Apart from that, they also get to interact with a lot of the school personnel out of the class situation and probably have a better chance of consulting on educational matters, and most importantly how to become better with their grades.

The work-study opportunity also makes it easier for the students to cover part of their loans without having to worry so much. By the time you are through with school, you will probably have less to pay as compared with other students who will be starting to pay their loans from scratch. The work-study situation is not just about working to pay off the loans, but it also gives the students an awesome chance with respect to the job market, and the work experience. These are some of the means through which Hope College is helping students with their finances.

Make no mistake about this, we love work study programs because the jobs given to students via work study programs at colleges are fun and easy and many times you can do your homework while working them too!

Tips for getting Unclaimed College Scholarships

Unclaimed Scholarship Tips

When the scholarship season for the colleges comes to a close in this summer, there will be unused scholarships, or unclaimed scholarships with millions of dollars left over.

According to the statistics only one student out of ten full time students studying at a four year college had some sort of scholarship, and the average amount for that is just $2,815.

ABCnews.go.com, how to pay for the college tuition fees is clearly on people’s minds.

The staff over at Scholarship America actually saw an increase in the number of calls that they receive from families and they also noticed that the callers had more urgency in their tones.

Even the Kentucky campus of Berea college, a college which gives all the accepted students full-tuition scholarships, saw a rise in 15% of applicants this year round and the number of families trying to get the free application of federal student aid almost jumped by 21%in the first three months of this year.

What are the reasons for this?

Students either don’t apply at the correct time or they are not applying for scholarships at all.

Some tips are:

  • · Start early: many of the scholarships are only available to junior year high schoolers. Also there are many scholarship sponsors who offer mentoring to these students and start tracking them in junior high.
  • · Avoid errors: errors should be avoided on your application at all costs. All the directions should be followed very closely and the essay should be proofed several times.
  • · Remember accomplishments: a high school student should keep in mind all the sports or community or science achievements that he or she has so that when the senior year comes they have a ready list to refer to.
  • · Shop around for Recommendation Letters: never assume that a favorite teacher will hand out a recommendation letter. Even if the teacher thinks that you’re the best student, the writing skills of the teacher may not be very good. So you should look for all the potential teachers who can write you a good recommendation letter.

Some examples of awards that get under-applied to are the AXA achievement scholarship awards $25,000 to students who help their community on a large scale. Another is the National Wild Turkey Federation which usually offers up to $10,000 to students who hold a valid license to hunt and are active in their communities.

According to www.investopedia.com, there is a myth that there are usually millions of dollars of unclaimed scholarships. This is a myth created by fraudulent organizations that usually charge students for scholarship searches. Most of these unrewarded scholarship monies usually comes from scholarship programs which are very restrictive and only a very small pool of applicants are actually eligible for it.

For example a scholarship for color blind left handed females from Wisconsin would probably result in funds which are left over. And families should be very careful because when they get desperate for these scholarships they might fall prey to educational internet scams, charging fees for information you can get entirely free off the internet yourself by just searching for it.

Marvin Carmichael, a past chairman of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has his viewpoint that gives a statistic that usually 85% of the scholarships which are termed to be unclaimed scholarships are basically employer backed education benefits. Many don’t apply to them and there are millions of dollars left unclaimed, or unused.

Also, the experts advise people not to pay private firms to look for these so called unclaimed scholarship dollars as you could do the same for yourself, by searching on the internet. Many of these offers are usually scams, and even the most legitimate of the searches don’t usually offer what a student himself could look up for free on the internet or from the school guidance counselor.

Unclaimed Scholarship Myths

Myths and legends exist everywhere, even in the world of unclaimed scholarships for college. There are so many different reasons why these different college scholarship myths take shape, but the unfortunate thing is that they discourage students from applying for scholarships that they could easily achieve.

It is a very bad misconception that the scholarships are only awarded to the the best candidates, or the valedictorians only.

Academic institutions usually have a different range of scholarships programs with many different kinds of eligibility requirements.

Many people who usually deal with financial aid and undergrad scholarships go out of their own way to address these myths about unclaimed scholarships for college. One such person is Marvin Carmichael, a former chairman of the NASFAA (National association of Student Financial aid Administrators). He is very familiar with the misunderstandings that people have over unclaimed scholarships, or scholarships in general.

Marvin Carmichael is now the Director of financial aid at Clemson University, and this is where he goes on to dismiss the common myths about the unclaimed scholarships. Keep in mind this is his opinion only on these types of scholarships. Others in his same position has other opinions which may contradict the below. Nevertheless; it’s a good idea to get various opinions on this subject as possible because it’s so controversial.

Myth 1: Unclaimed scholarships amount to billions of dollars
This myth has actually been around since the word scholarship was actually invented. Carmichael says that there are times that the universities have scholarships that don’t get awarded but it’s very seldom. Usually the main reasons for those scholarships not to be awarded are very high eligibility requirements or because of unfortunate timing.

There might actually be a lot of funds that might amount into billions of US dollars, but that’s not due to the lack of unclaimed scholarships. This myth also usually fails to take in account the employer paid scholarships that are usually included in the total of scholarships, and of all the unclaimed scholarships which those amount to eighty five percent.

Myth 2: Due to so much competition I will not get a college scholarship
There are lot of grants and potential awards available out there and all you have to do is seek them out first. But the important point to remember here is that you have to determine what your best abilities are. Scholarships are not just for the valedictorians but also for people who have unique talents and interests. The opportunities out there are quite diverse.

As you begin your search you should first start with your own community and local associations in your area. The people who employ your parents might even sponsor your college scholarships and most of them don’t require anything more than a speech or an essay.

Myth 3: only the best students get undergraduate scholarships.
It not always that the top students get the scholarships says Carmichael. He points out that the universities are not able to use the fee and tuition revenue they get for the scholarships, rather these scholarships funds come from individuals. Government sponsored programs or state sponsored institutions usually make large donations to be used as scholarships.

Some of those scholarships are awarded to the students with a particular kind of major. This can be explained in an example that say someone from the textile industry wants to set up a fund for a scholarship program, the students that might apply for that scholarship might not be high achievers but they might meet the criteria put in place by the donor.

Myth 4: university scholarships won’t come to me because I am not a top student.
Very few students get free rides and in reality they use a lot of different financial mechanisms to cover their tuition and cover their costs. Students are also encouraged to explore other options available to them such as grants, loans, federal and state programs and tuition tax credits. You’ll be awarded more if you have more going for you and you should not sit back and wait for the money to come in to your help.

According to www.naas.org, they are still sponsoring scholarships worth over one million dollars, which also includes grants and loans. And around $100,000 of this financial aid, grants, loans and scholarships which were targeted for high-school seniors went unused because a lot of high school counselors did not distribute the appropriate literature. At a time when a lot of families are struggling this is not only unethical but outrageous.

Could these awards from naas.org actually be authentic college unclaimed scholarships!

Maybe!
