The Christopher Reeve Award scholarship for community service for high school seniors is awarded every year by the Heart of America Foundation’s Heroes of the Heart program. This community service scholarship awards $1,000 to a student who has displayed exceptional compassion through community service activities. A previous winner of the award represents a strong example of what it may take to win such an award. Having at least 8,000 hours of community service formally logged as well as being responsible for raising more than $40,000 to fight malaria, the 2010 winner is a shining star with regards to her volunteer services. All students must be nominated for this award and nominees will need to be high school seniors. There are no restrictions on who may nominate students. All nomination materials must be submitted by September 1.

Another great source for students who have a lot of community service hours under their belt would be the Lowe’s Scholarship program. This community service scholarship provides (140) $2,500 awards to students every year making this award an easier scholarship to get because so many are given out each year. In order to be eligible for the program students will need to be high school seniors with at least a 3.25 grade point average who will be able to show an incredible commitment to community service throughout their young lives.

Alongside the Lowe’s community service scholarship is the Carl Buchan program which gives out (50) different $5,000 scholarships to deserving students. All applicants interested in this latter program will need to be high school seniors graduating or college undergrad students who have gone to school for at least one full time semester. This particular community service scholarship is reserved only for Lowe’s employees who have maintained a 3.25 gpa while also having a strong commitment to community service. The deadline for these to programs is normally in late February opening to interested applicants the prior year in mid-December.

Applicants to these community service scholarships and those like them will need to have a strong commitment. This sort of commitment rarely comes out of some interest in scoring points with scholarship committees later on. One opportunity for a high school student is the QuestBridge Scholarship. A number of prestigious universities have joined forces with QuestBridge to provide low-income, high school students entering their senior year with a chance to sample college life. Students are given a full-ride summer scholarship to one of the following schools in order to take classes, live in dorms, play sports, and get to know students from a vast array of backgrounds. Emory, Harvard, Notre Dame, Penn, Stanford and Yale are all participants in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Students must have excellent GPA’s and test scores despite facing economic challenges. Many students go on to be considered for college scholarships to the university attended for this summer program.

The Sloan Career Cornerstone provides a state-by-state of many similar pre-college camps and summer programs that offer experiences in core and specific areas of study to give students an edge upon entrance into college. Many of these programs take place at universities around the country and give students a feel for the campus, as well as provide a real-life introduction as to the daily pace of college life. Local companies and the universities themselves often offer summer school scholarships or financial aid for these opportunities.

The Henderson-Reznick and Shinners families donated funds to be used to provide an unpaid internship to a student whom would not otherwise be able to afford such an opportunity. The award is based on the applicant’s activism and a 500-1000 word essay. The deadline for application is January 31 and in addition to the monetary award, students receive a free trip to the American Atheists’ National Convention.

The American Atheists Founders’ Scholarship grants a first place award of $2000 and runner-up prize(s) of $1000 to atheist students. Similarly to the Chinn Scholarship, current college students or high school students entering college next year are eligible as long as they are Atheist, can demonstrate activism and a 2.5 minimum GPA. The application deadline is January 31, 2011 and decisions will be made regarding decisions by March 1, 2011.

The Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship is available to students who are secular humanists studying at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Founded by Herb Silverman, who is also a retired math professor from the college and the president of the Secular Coalition for America, the Agnostic scholarship honors academic effort and financial need in a student who offers promise in the area of critical thinking and is a secular humanist. This is a $1700 renewable scholarship as long as a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

The Mark Twain Scholarship for Atheist students is available to freethinkers who completely reject anything that inhibits any type of freedom, be it religious or otherwise. Recipients must attend a secular university or college and major in one of the following areas: arts and humanities, applied arts, education, science, social sciences, mathematics, engineering or law. An essay is also required for this $300-$500 scholarship. The deadline for one of the eight Agnostic scholarships is December 31 of each year.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sponsors several essay contests for Atheist college scholarships annually. All of the following contests reward several winners with the same monetary amounts per placement: first prize – $2,000, second prize – $1,000, third – $500, fourth – $300, and honorable mention – $200. The 17th Herbert Bushong essay contest honors free thinkers in the area of religion and offers several awards based on essay responses. The 32nd FFRF Michael Hakeem Memorial College Essay Competition is for students in North America under the age of 25 and rewards students for choosing reason over faith. Conversely, the FFRF Brian Bolton Graduate/Mature student essay competition is specifically for graduate students and adult students over the age of 25 and this year the essay topic is a focused piece on the separation of church and state.

Due to this, be prepared with evidence of activism in your school and out, be ready to explain your rationale and beliefs (of lack thereof), and be equipped to write persuasively on a related topic, as many of these Agnostic Atheist scholarships are essay based.

*The Change My World Forever Ambassador People to People scholarship provides awards to fifty different students every year in the amount of $1,000. The deadline for this program is March 18. Financial need is an additional eligibility requirement.
*The Ambassadorial Spirit People to People scholarship provides $1,000 to 20 different students every year. The deadline for this program is March 18. Financial need must be demonstrated.
*Friends of Ambassadors People to People scholarships are given out to a varying number of students every year in the amount of $1,000 per students. Application materials must be turned in no later than January 11. This is another financial need People to People scholarship.
*The Cellhire Techno-Teen People to People scholarship awards six different $1,000 scholarships. While this is listed as a 2011 People to People scholarship, there is a possibility that it will reopen in 2012. Students should check with the website to determine whether or not it will continue is 2012. The deadline for this program is listed as March 18 and financial need is not an eligibility requirement.

On top of offering People to People scholarships, the organization also offers interest free loans to students on an international basis. Other various scholarships are sometimes offered by People to People International such as the Joyce C. Hall College Scholarship. However these programs are not necessarily continuous and no updated 2011 scholarship applications have been posted on this particular program. Other programs include the James Eunice Doty Congressional Award Scholarship and the Mary Jean Eisenhower Partner in Peace Award. Like the Joyce C. Hall People to People scholarship no 2011 date has been listed for these programs and the yearly deadline for the Mary Jean Eisenhower Award has already passed suggesting that it may not be renewed. However students should always check with the People to People scholarship website to get updates on these programs and scholars with a strong academic record should apply should they reopen.

As long as a sponsor awards many scholarships yearly for students like the People to People Scholarships do, then these are the easiest scholarships to apply to and get simply because of the odds being in your favor.

Students must be attend an accredited two- or four- year college anywhere in the world and maintain a 2.75 or higher GPA. The Nicodemus Wilderness Project encourages volunteerism through its Apprentice Ecological Initiative. Students who initiate an ecological project not only help their community and planet but may be eligible for a green scholarship for environmental consciousness people . A wide variety of projects can be initiated by students: from collecting rainwater for use in watering gardens to planting native grasses or picking up garbage in protected areas. Singer John Denver and Thomas Crum co-founded The Windstar Foundation which awards several undergraduate environmental scholarships for green students and one graduate scholarship “”To inspire individuals to make responsible choices and take direct personal actions to achieve a peaceful and environmentally sustainable future.” The undergraduate green scholarships are $500 while the graduate scholarship is awarded to students in their second year of graduate school and is $1000. Applicants should have a college GPA of 3.0 or better in their selected major of Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering or some other major focused on environmental studies. Hard copy applications are no longer accepted and electronic application must be received by June 1, 2011.

The Dr. Wesley Eckenfelder Scholarship honors its namesake’s contributions to the environment. College juniors, seniors, or those in a graduate program to study chemical, civil or environmental engineering or an environmental science may be eligible for the $5,000 green scholarship. The environment scholarship is funded by Brown and Caldwell, a private U.S. environmental company. Its principals of simplicity, economy and innovation drive the company’s philosophy and its sponsorship of this scholarship for being green conscious. Applications are accepted until January 31.

The organic foods company Annie’s Homegrown strives to grow and market natural foods to its customers. Their philosophy: Planet to Food, Food to People, and People to Planet sustains the company as well as Annie’s Sustainable Scholarships in Agriculture. This year $75,000 in environment scholarships will be provided to support future farmers in their education and profession. Winners are announced in April.

2011 marks the 12th Annual Brower Youth Awards which reward six outstanding leaders in the areas of conservation, preservation and restoration of the planet. Each recipient of a $3000 green scholarship must be between the ages of 13-22, live in North America and must have organized an environmental project. The environmental scholarship for green students is funded by the Earth Island Institute which also sends the recipients to San Francisco for a weekend which pairs environmental concern and leadership development together.
