It would appear that unclaimed scholarships may be available but they do not appear to be available in the easy to obtain and abundant numbers that are typically reported. If you do have an unusual talent or a rare set of characteristics it might be possible that you are eligible for some obscure scholarship funds which other students would not be eligible to receive, but it would be best not to count on such unclaimed scholarship funds to fund the entire cost of your education. This is particularly true when you consider the fact that there are other ways you can fund your education, including numerous easier scholarship programs that are not based on a restrictive set of eligibility criteria.

The best and biggest scholarship databases are actually available with no need to pay to receive the information. If you live in a community that is near any Cargill business, you may be eligible for one of the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs. Often, unknown scholarships that are available in a student’s local community are over looked as a possible source of funding for a higher education because students simply aren’t aware of them. This very well could be the case with the Cargill scholarship for high school students. Cargill hands out large amounts of relatively unknown scholarships each and every year and all high school students should take the time to apply if they default into the Cargill scholarship criteria. These can be easy scholarships for many high school students.

Cargill is an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial & industrial products and services. Started in 1865, Cargill has 159,000 employees world wide in 68 countries. Cargill is an innovative company which has been prosperous at challanging economic, environmental and social problems head on.

The Cargill Scholarship Program includes three different scholarships – the Cargill Community Scholarship Program, the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Juniors, and the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Seniors.

To be eligible for the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs community scholarship, you must be a high school senior, and you must live in a community near a Cargill business operation. While the scholarship application must be signed by someone who works for Cargill, Cargill employees and their children are not eligible for this particular HS scholarship.

The amount of this scholarship for high school seniors award is $1000, and a $200 grant is given to each winner’s high school library as a bonus. This is a one time award and it is awarded to 350 students annually. Applications are usually due in February of each year, and the winners are notified in May. The application is usually available from the Cargill website in November of each year.

The other two scholarship types make up the rest of the Cargill Community Scholarships Programs, and these corporate scholarships are for the children of Cargill employees. The first one is the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Juniors. As the name implies it is awarded to high school juniors, and only ten of these scholarships are awarded annually. Students should apply during their junior year of high school, and applications are due in February.

The amount of this scholarship for high school juniors is $1000, for each year of college, up to four years. Any high school junior is eligible if they have a parent working for Cargill, and if they have taken the PSAT/NMSQT. Remember, that this is a renewable scholarship, meaning that you will receive $1000 for each year that you are in college, but there may be conditions such as maintaining a certain grade point average to remain eligible. Your parent will also need to remain an employee of the company to retain eligibility.

The second high school scholarship, the Cargill Scholarship Program for Sons & Daughters – High School Seniors, have the same guidelines and requirements, except that the student must be a senior when they apply. (40) of these scholarships are awarded each year, but they are one time awards, in the amount of $3000.

If you are eligible for either of these unknown scholarships for high school students for sons and daughters, you should apply for both – in your junior year of high school, and again in your senior year. These high school scholarships are not made available to graduate students.

If you are not eligible for these high school scholarships, or you do not win one, be aware that the Cargill Community Scholarship Programs have other options, such as internship programs or employee tuition reimbursement programs. Aside from supporting those in their own country, AusAID also seeks to help exceptional students from other countries study and find their career in Australia. When their education and exposure in Australia are complete, the students are then sent back to their mother country to continue their personal growth and development there and to support their own country and government’s independence with his/her new knowledge.

The Benefits of Applying for AusAID Scholarships 2011

Aside from a fully paid tuition fee, as well as return travel from homeland to Australia and back, the scholar is fitted with a one-time 5,000 Australian Dollars (roughly $4,900.00 USD) allowance to establish him/herself in the country. This means books, insurance, and study materials will be paid for. Also, their Contribution to Living Expense (CLE) is a stipend to living expenses that will be determined by AusAID. Since 2009, those under this scholarship have received a total of A$25,000. Once the student gets their bearings in the country, and as soon as he/she is orienting into the immediate surroundings, a mandatory 4-6-week program will teach them of culture, history, and student life in Australia. Who Are Qualified for the Unknown AusAID Scholarship 2011?

Initial qualifications are based on countries who are supporters and members of Australian Development Scholarships. A short list of these includes Asia (Philippines, Bangladesh, China, India, Cambodia, Viet Nam), the Carribean (Haiti, Jamaica, Belize, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago), the Middle East (Afghanistan, Iraq), and Latin America (Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador, Nicaragua).

If you live in one of these countries, you must not be engaged or married to an Australian or New Zealand citizen, and have no permanent residences in either country, as well as applying from outside Australia. Previous AusAID scholarships must be done 24 months before being eligible for application. For those who are familiar with English, you will still need acceptable test results from TOEFL and IELTS no longer than 24 months prior to applying. The Core First Annual Que LLueva Cafe Scholarship ranges in value from $500 to $1,000 and is sponsored by Chicano Organizing & Research in Education. This award is available to students who are in California. To be eligible, the student must be an undocumented student of either Chicano or Latino descent who is a graduating senior and who will be enrolling in an accredited university or college in the United States or Puerto Rico. This illegal immigrant scholarship was founded with the purpose of providing a direct response and assistance to aspiring scholars who might otherwise be prevented from continuing their education due to their undocumented status. Interested applicants for this unclaimed scholarship for undocumented students should be either a high school student or GED graduate who will be enrolling for the first time in an accredited university or high school. Applicants must not be current college students. All applications for this immigrant scholarship must be postmarked by February 25th.

SALEF Fulfilling Our Dreams Scholarship for Undocumented Students

The SALEF Fulfilling Our Dreams Scholarship is also available to illegal immigrants who are Latino or Central American and who are from the Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley or San Francisco Bay Area. Students from L.A. should specifically be from Pico Union, South Central Los Angeles or East Los Angeles. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible and must also be active in community involvement. Students should plan to enter the fields of technology, health care, philosophy or certain other areas. The deadline for this little known about scholarship for Illegal Immigrants is June 3rd.

Students planning to attend Santa Ana College in Orange County, California may wish to apply for their scholarship for illegal immigrants; which is awarded to foreign nationals, including illegal aliens. Credit Union scholarships can be easier then most to win, because of their unconventional way of awarding college money. Many have essays students will be required to turn in about subjects the Credit Union chooses.

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF) boast that they are constucting the hotel industry of tommorrow and insuring that by making sure that all the talent needed to support it will be there to do it. They are also a no-profit created in 1953 as a charity. Since the beginning they have passed out more than 20 million in educational awards. They rely on contributions from people who feel strongly about the well being of this industry.

The AH&LEF has academic unclaimed college scholarships for incoming freshman to graduate students. Hotel employees have access to these as well along with minorities too, but all hospitality management students can apply for them.

Some AH&LEF scholarships have a minimum GPA standard, while others do not. Part time as well as full time students are free to apply; but ALL must be hospitality management majors in order to win.

The awards go from as little as $500 to $6000 and it takes very little time to apply too.

May 1st is deadline for all applications, and there are a number of awards to apply to depending on what your educational category is.

If students win they will also get assistance and guidance from the AH&LEF on building their careers rapidly through all their educational support they provide for the winners of their scholarships.

The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation was set up to sponsor annual literary contest for the LGBT (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender) lifestyle. It also is a non-profit organization. The Foundation was set up in memory of Bruce Brown.

The play-writing competition guidelines are are to be submitted electronically and only full-length works such as comedies ,screenplays, musicals and drama’s are only considered, and must be all original material. Submissions subject matter must deal with the LGBT lifestyle and based on and influenced by a historical real life figure, work of art, culture or even an event that occurred.

If you look at just what the word ‘unclaimed’ means you will see it’s an adjective only; and that the definition for unclaimed is:  ‘unknown, usually by choice’. This could indicate for example that a student won a scholarship and they decide not to claim it.

If you look at the Antonyms for unclaimed they are: discovered, identified, known, named. This could mean that a who student wins a scholarship, is identified and known who it is; and is named publicly.

The Synonyms for the word ‘unclaimed’ are many such as : incognito, undisclosed, innominate, nameless, unnamed, pseudo, pseudonymous, secret, so and so, such and such, unacknowledged, unattested, unavowed, unclaimed , uncredited, undesignated, unidentified, unsigned, unspecified, what’s his/her name, whatchamacallit, you know who…. you get the point!

Some people or students seem to think that just because a scholarship is not claimed than anyone can lay claim to it very quick and easily as their own if they discover it. Well, this seems too easy and unrealistic to say the lest. I guess if the student applies to it and qualifies for it then they can easily win it. But to just to try to fill the vacuum of the student who doesn’t claim it without qualifying for it would be wishful thinking and actually trying to get something for nothing. But there are some students who think this way.

A basic and safe way to describe unclaimed scholarships may be just that it’s monies for college that has not been given away or awarded yet, and that you can apply for it once you discover it – period!  The unclaimed monies are sitting their waiting to be awarded to the right student who fits what the scholarship sponsor is looking for and they will not award it until they have a perfect match for it! This means you still have a chance of getting it if it hasn’t been assigned or awarded at that time.

What are In-Course Scholarships?

Doing extremely well in your given course of study is something you should strive for. Not only does it help you to do well in the program, but it also helps you in your chosen career when you graduate. Many schools also offer in-course scholarships too as a way of offering something to support those that are excelling. These nameless, or unclaimed scholarships are merit based, and they can make the difference between someone being able to continue their education or not.

The requirements of in-course scholarships though can vary based on the school offering them or the provider of the funds. They generally will require the applicants to have a very high GPA of 3.0 or higher. The student usually needs to be enrolled in the program at least 12 credit hours.

There are also those in-course scholarships that require a department leader in that area of study to recommend students for the funding. These are students that have shown leadership, a desire to learn, and that have excellent grades.

Application Process for in-course scholarships

At many educational entities, there is no application that a student needs to complete. If they meet the criteria with their grades then they will automatically get the funding. There is no competition and there is no limit to the number of them as each student that is merit approved for the funds will get them.

Other in-course scholarships though do require an application to be completed. This can include those that are merit based and those that are recommended by faculty. It is important to find out if the funds offered do require an application or not. Too often, students that would qualify for them don’t get them because they didn’t know they needed an application and when they did find out, the date for turning them in had already passed.

For the majority of the in-course scholarships offered, the deadline to apply is May 31st. However, there could be exceptions so make sure you look into them. Here are some of the common unknown scholarships worth having a peak at to see if you would qualify.

Catherine O. Cameron Memorial Scholarship

This unacknowledged scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women. Applicants must be females that are in the 2nd or subsequent year in the study of geography. Students that show a significant financial need will be a priority for these funds. The amount given depends on available funding and the financial situation of the student.

The Dr. Valentine Guy Griswick Scholarship

This is a scholarship for graduate students only that are in either the 3rd or 4th year of study. Along with an application, applicants have to write an essay about what their future plans are for their medical career. There can be one or more recipients of this scholarship depending on funds and application volume. The dollar amount awarded depends on financial need and the available funding.

The Mrs. Anne Greskiw Scholarship

This in-course scholarship find is for those in the field of pre-med. There are two scholarships awarded annually in the amount of $1,650 each. Students must be in the 3rd or 4th year of the program. They also need to provide a written essay about what their plans are for their medical career. Students that show a significant financial need will be a priority with these funds.

TD Insurance Meloche Monnex Scholarship

This is an unspecified scholarship offered to a 3rd year student in any field that is in very good standing. A stipulation is that the applicants must be the child or grandchild of school alumni. The award is a single $1,000 unknown scholarship annually.

Tom Perry Award

This is an in-course scholarship of $1,050 for a student that has demonstrated a significant contribution to the betterment of the environment through a non-profit charitable organization. There is an application required along with a letter of recommendation from that organization.

Association for Women in Mathematics

The all female scholarships offered by this national educational foundation are open to graduate women who are working on a professional degree as well as undergraduate students. Graduate scholarships are offered for one academic year and will not exceed $2,500. The women scholarships are paid directly to the recipients. Undergraduate scholarships are open to freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior students as well as graduating high school senior students. The awards are for one academic year. Amounts for undergraduate scholarships will vary from $500 to $1,000 and will be paid directly to the school.

Zeta Phi Beta also sponsors the Deborah Partridge Wolfe International Fellowship. This award is available to graduate and undergraduate students who are studying abroad as well as foreign students who are studying in the United States. The amount of the scholarship will vary between $500 and $1,000.

The Evelyn Lewis Memorial Scholarship in Medical Health Sciences is available to undergrad and graduate women enrolled in a program that will lead to a degree in health sciences or medicine. Award amounts vary between $500 and $1,000.

The Lullelia W. Harrison Scholarship in Counseling is offered to graduate and undergraduate students who are enrolled in a counseling degree program. Award amounts for this unknown scholarship for women students vary between $500 and $1,000.

CFMT Scholarships

CFMT also offers unknown women scholarships. CFMT, or the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, administers more than 70 scholarships. The Boren scholarships are offered to undergraduate students and the fellowships are reserved for graduate students. With either program, the recipients get the opportunity to study language in one of many different countries. The goal is to create a structure that allows for effective communication to take place around the world. While learning the new language, students also get a first hand chance to evaluate and be part of the culture in that country. Such an experience is very different than just reading about a culture in books.

To apply for the Boren scholarships for language studies an individual must be a US citizen at the time of their application. They must have a high school diploma or GED. They must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program in the USA. They can’t graduate until the language scholarship has been completed. They must apply to and be accepted to a program of study outside of the USA.

The amount of each obscure language scholarship is up to $20,000 to pay for the cost of learning in one of the designated countries. The goal is to expand the number of people in the USA that are able to understand languages that aren’t as popular as others. These languages include Arabic, Russian, and Swahili.

The amount of each fellowship is up to $30,000 to pay for the cost of learning or expanding knowledge of a particular language. Some of the counties offered include Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Both offer an amazing opportunity to learn a new language and to become a part of a solution for breaking down global barriers. Those accepted will be determined based on their accomplishments academically, their contributions to the community, and their outlook about reaching out to new communities and cultures.

David L. Boren is the creator of these language scholarships and fellowships. The reason it was implemented was to offer the USA more individuals that have the abilities to speak various languages. Their contributions can help to properly represent countries that have been neglected in the past in terms of USA students studying in such locations. The partnerships that have been created with other countries through the Boren programs is exceptional and continues to grow all the time.

Through the Institute of International Education, the Boren scholarships and fellowships are administered. Each year over 18,000 students get the opportunity to study in another country and to learn their language and culture. As a result all citizens of the USA benefit due to the International competency that is being created. There are many jobs with the USA government and private businesses that a person can qualify for due to being fluent in a particular language.

The application deadline for Boren Scholarships and Fellowships is the last day of January for fellowships and February 9th for these unknown scholarships. The goal of the competition is to encourage students to pursue invention actively. While students in this competition scholarship often come from engineering, science, technology and mathematics studies, applicants from creative invention studies are also eligible. In addition, the Competition recognizes a working relationship between students and their advisors. The program was first introduced in May of 1990. Invent Now operates the program. The United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Abbott Fund sponsor the Competition. This competition scholarship is not widely known by many invention type students looking for student aid.

While the competition is not a typical type of scholarship program and does not offer direct tuition assistance, the program does recognize discoveries, research and innovations by awarding unrestricted cash prizes. Prizes for the competition scholarship are awarded to the top three entries within each division. Advisors for winning entrants will also receive a cash prize.

Collegiate Inventors Competition Scholarship has many awards

The Gold award in the graduate division is awarded $15,000 while their advisor receives $5,000. The Silver award winner in the graduate division receives $10,000 and their advisor receives a $2,500 award. The Bronze winner in the graduate division receives $5,000 and their advisor receives $1,000.

Applying criteria for the Collegiate Inventors Competition Scholarship

To apply for the little known competition scholarship, applicants must complete an application comprised of general student information as well as an essay that includes a short description of their invention. Information from the student’s faculty advisor should also be provided along with a letter of recommendation from the student’s faculty advisor. In addition, there should be a patent search and summary conducted. The applicant should also submit any supporting documentation or materials that are relevant. This may include graphs, charts, CDs or DVDs, samples, slides, etc.

All entries are required to be the original idea as well as work product of either a student or a team of students. In addition, the work or product must not have been made available to the public as either a process or a commercial product. Furthermore, the work or product must not have been described in significant detail in a publication that is a year before the submission. Finally, the work or product must not have been issued patent more than a year before the date of application.

Machine submissions must be fully operable. Chemical submissions must be fully complete. Students should not submit their inventions, only the information and supporting documentation required.

The deadline to apply for this unknown competition scholarship is typically prior to the end of June. In order to be eligible to enter, students are required to be enrolled or have been enrolled full-time for at least a portion of the twelve month time period before the entry date. In the case of a team entry, at least one of the team members must be able to meet the full-time criteria for eligibility. A maximum of four team members are allowed on a single team. Applicants do not need to be a Canadian or U.S. citizen to enter the Competition. With that said, applicants are required to be eligible for enrollment in a Canadian or U.S. college or university. Advisors are allowed to be from another institution. Applicants need not have an advisor that has worked directly on the project with them in order to be eligible.

Applicants are allowed to send multiple entries. There are no limits on the number of entries that may be submitted by a team of students or a student. Only one prize will be awarded to a student or a team for the Collegiate Inventors Competition scholarship.

Home Educators Resource Center offers Home School Scholarships

HERC offers Legacy Scholarship awards to high school students living in Kern County in California who were homeschooled. To be eligible for this little known scholarship, students do not need to be a member of HERC. Applications are judged based on a variety of elements, including the submission of a 300 to 500 word essay as well as demonstration of Christian service and academic preparedness through SAT/ACT scores and transcript. The home schooled scholarship is worth $1,000.

Indiana Congressman Mike Pence Award for Academic Excellence

Applicants for this unknown scholarship award should be residents of Indiana and must also have been homeschooled and have plans to attend a four year college or university. This home school scholarship is solely based on academic merit. Students do not need to demonstrate financial need to be eligible for this scholarship award. The scholarship is worth $2,000 and may be renewed for up to $2,000. The scholarship is funded through Apologia Educational Ministries.

North Carolina for Home Education Award for Mission and Ministry Training

To be eligible for this homeschooler scholarship award all applicants must be graduates of a homeschool in North Carolina and must also have plans to be trained for ministry or the mission field. The scholarship award is worth $500 and may be renewed for up to four years. This scholarship is funded through Apologia Mission and is also administered through North Carolinas for Home Education.

Wisconsin-Herb Kohl Excellence College Scholarship for Home School Students

This obscure scholarship program seeks to recognize citizenship, student leadership, community involvement, school involvement and academic achievement. $1,000 scholarships are awarded to 100 students throughout the state of Wisconsin. While this program does award unknown scholarships to high school students, home school students also receive a proportionate number of scholarships.

Sonlight Scholarships for for Homeschoolers

A total of 13 home school scholarships are available through this program, sponsored by Sonlight Curriculum. The award amounts of these undiscovered scholarships vary from $1,000 to $5,000 each. Students must have purchased as well as used five Sonlight core curriculum programs in order to qualify for these homeschool scholarships. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is in early December.

Washington Bible College offers Scholarships for Homeschoolers

The Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award is given to a college sophomore or junior who is studying physics or a related field. This is a $1000 award that is given annual. Applicants should be well-rounded with a strong academic background and must also demonstrate that they have exceptional potential within extracurricular activities or have overcome some hardship.

The Horizons Scholarship for Women in Defense

The Horizons Scholarship is awarded by ‘Women in Defense’ to women who are pursuing careers associated with national security and/or the defense interests of the U.S. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need and must also have a minimum GPA of 3.25. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens. This award varies between $500 and $12,000. The application deadline is July 1st. Applicants must be currently enrolled at an accredited university as an undergraduate or graduate student.

Amelia Earhart Fellowship Scholarships for Woman

Other hidden scholarships for women include the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. This little recognized scholarship award is specifically for women who are pursuing an education in fields that are typically male-dominated, such as aerospace related engineering. More than $7 million has been awarded to some 1,200 women from around the world. The award is worth $10,000. Applications must be submitted no later than November 15th. Applicants must be pursuing a doctoral degree and must also demonstrate academic excellence in the field of aerospace.

These programs are almost entirely made possible by the Siemens Foundation which has a special interest in supporting programs that focus on science, math and technology. The group gives out over 7 million dollars every year to deserving groups, foundations and individuals to see towards pushing their interest in technology, science, math and providing students with financial assistance towards higher education goals. As mentioned above, the Siemens scholarship as provided through the American Society for Clinical Pathology is a great source for financial assistance. The graduate scholarship program gives out $1,000 to five different students every year.

This is of course not the only type of scholarship given out by the Siemens company Foundation. Every year the foundation also awards a number of merit-based scholarships of $6,000. These Siemens merit scholarships last for a total of four years with $1,500 being disbursed each academic cycle. All applicants should be US citizens, have taken the Preliminary SAT during their junior year of high school, be planning to enter college full time the next fall and maintain their academic strength while attending college. Further all students applying to the program must be children of current Siemens employees. Applications are due no later than April 1 of every year. In 2010 and 2011 60 different students receiveawards through the Siemens merit scholarship program.

All in all, the Siemens Foundation is one of the more charitable organizations out there with regards to providing financial assistance for the purpose of higher education. The award is based on the applicant’s activism and a 500-1000 word essay. The deadline for application is January 31 and in addition to the monetary award, students receive a free trip to the American Atheists’ National Convention.

The American Atheists Founders’ Scholarship grants a first place award of $2000 and runner-up prize(s) of $1000 to atheist students. Similarly to the Chinn Scholarship, current college students or high school students entering college next year are eligible as long as they are Atheist, can demonstrate activism and a 2.5 minimum GPA. The application deadline is January 31, 2011 and decisions will be made regarding decisions by March 1, 2011.

The Silverman Secular Humanist Scholarship is available to students who are secular humanists studying at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Founded by Herb Silverman, who is also a retired math professor from the college and the president of the Secular Coalition for America, the Agnostic scholarship honors academic effort and financial need in a student who offers promise in the area of critical thinking and is a secular humanist. This is a $1700 renewable scholarship as long as a 3.0 GPA is maintained.

The Mark Twain Scholarship for Atheist students is available to freethinkers who completely reject anything that inhibits any type of freedom, be it religious or otherwise. Recipients must attend a secular university or college and major in one of the following areas: arts and humanities, applied arts, education, science, social sciences, mathematics, engineering or law. An essay is also required for this $300-$500 scholarship. The deadline for one of the eight Agnostic scholarships is December 31 of each year.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sponsors several essay contests for Atheist college scholarships annually. All of the following contests reward several winners with the same monetary amounts per placement: first prize – $2,000, second prize – $1,000, third – $500, fourth – $300, and honorable mention – $200. The 17th Herbert Bushong essay contest honors free thinkers in the area of religion and offers several awards based on essay responses. The 32nd FFRF Michael Hakeem Memorial College Essay Competition is for students in North America under the age of 25 and rewards students for choosing reason over faith. Conversely, the FFRF Brian Bolton Graduate/Mature student essay competition is specifically for graduate students and adult students over the age of 25 and this year the essay topic is a focused piece on the separation of church and state.
